Talk about a plot twist! Guy Pearce – star of Christopher Nolan’s “Memento” – revealed in a new interview he’s been blocked from working with the director again.
Guy Pearce: “Beg my wife’s forgiveness before I blow your brains out.”
Nolan is known for working with many actors multiple times – like Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, and Anne Hathaway. But speaking to Vanity Fair, Pearce said he hadn’t teamed up with Nolan since “Memento” in the early 2000s – even though the director discussed roles with him over the years for films like “Batman Begins” and “The Prestige.” So, why the snub? Pearce revealed an executive at Warner Bros. didn’t think he was worth the hype.
He claims the exec told his agent, “I don’t get Guy Pearce. I’m never going to get Guy Pearce. I’m never going to employ Guy Pearce.”
Pearce admits there are actors he doesn’t “get” either, but this decision ultimately meant he could never work with Nolan again.
This isn’t the first time the studio has been accused of questionable decisions. One example is the reported conflict with director David Ayer over his 2016 film “Suicide Squad.”
In a lengthy social media post, Ayer accuses Warner Bros. of drastically altering his original vision for the movie, saying in part, “The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again.” This month, he took to social media again, pushing for the director’s cut of the film.
As for Pearce – he still made his mark in Hollywood after “Memento.” Going on to star in blockbusters like “Iron Man 3” and the critically acclaimed “The King’s Speech.”
And Nolan’s tenure at Warner Bros. ended after the 2020 release of “Tenet.”
His most recent film “Oppenheimer” was made at Universal Pictures – and became one of the highest-grossing films of 2023. Variety reports the director has a new “mysterious” project reportedly slated for 2026.
