AFTER SUING HUNTINGTON BEACH EARLIER THIS YEAR OVER ITS VOTER I-D REQUIREMENT, THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA IS TAKING THE FIGHT UP A NOTCH — VOTING TO BAN ALL VOTER ID REQUIREMENTS.
IN MARCH, HUNTINGTON BEACH APPROVED AN ID REQUIREMENT FOR ALL CITY ELECTIONS. THE NEXT MONTH, THE STATE SUED TO STOP THE ID LAW, ACCUSING THE CITY OF VIOLATING THE STATE CONSTITUTION.
THE NEW STATE LAW PASSED THIS WEEK WOULD OVERRIDE HUNTINGTON BEACH’S CHARTER AMENDMENT.
HUNTINGTON BEACH OFFICIALS CLAIM THE LEGISLATURE’S MOVE IS PROOF THE CITY’S VOTER I-D MANDATE NEVER VIOLATED THE CONSTITUTION, AS THE STATE HAD ALLEGED.
THEY SAY IF THE BILL IS SIGNED BY THE GOVERNOR– THEY’LL FIGHT IT IN COURT.
THE BAN’S SUPPORTERS SAY I-D REQUIREMENTS HURT ELECTION TURNOUT AND “CREATE BARRIERS TO LAW ABIDING VOTERS.”
THEY NOTE THAT RESIDENTS ALREADY NEED A DRIVER’S LICENSE NUMBER OR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER TO REGISTER TO VOTE.
BUT CRITICS SAY CURRENT RULES LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN TO VOTER FRAUD.
CURRENTLY, UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS CAN GET CALIFORNIA IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS AND NONCITIZENS ARE ABLE TO VOTE IN LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS IN SAN FRANCISCO.
HUNTINGTON BEACH’S NEIGHBOR– SANTA ANA — MAY SOON FOLLOW SAN FRANCISCO’S LEAD — A MEASURE ALLOWING NONCITIZENS TO VOTE IN ALL CITY ELECTIONS WILL BE ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT.
WE’LL BE FOLLOWING THIS BILL AND IF IT BECOMES LAW.
