ACTIVISTS THREW HUNDREDS OF PING PONG BALLS AND SHOUTED “YOU DROPPED THE BALL ON DEMOCRACY” MONDAY AT ATLANTA’S CITY COUNCIL MEETING.
PROTESTING THE PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT DUBBED “COP CITY,” A 90 MILLION DOLLAR 85 ACRE COMPLEX THAT WILL HOUSE POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS– AND INCLUDE A SHOOTING RANGE AND MOCK CITY FOR TRAINING.
THE PING PONG BALLS TOSSED ONTO THE CHAMBER FLOORS REPRESENTED THE MORE THAN 100-THOUSAND SIGNATURES GATHERED FOR A PETITION OPPOSING THE FACILITY– WHICH OPPONENTS SAY SHOULD HAVE BEEN DECIDED BY THE PEOPLE OF ATLANTA NOT CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS.
[DEVIN BARRINGTON-WARD]
WILL YOU LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE OF THIS CITY OR WILL YOU SILENCE THEM? WILL YOU BE REMEMBERED AS LEADERS WHO DEFENDED DEMOCRACIES? OR ONES WHO STOOD BY WHILE IT DIED?
[JACK AYLMER]
ATLANTA MAYOR ANDRE DICKENS CLAIMS THE PETITION WAS TURNED IN TOO LATE. OPPONENTS COUNTERED BY FILING A FEDERAL LAWSUIT, WHICH ACCUSES THE CITY OF “STONEWALLING” AND DICKENS OF SUPPRESSING VOTES.
THE MAYOR’S OFFICE SAYS THE PETITION “RAISES SERIOUS LEGAL QUESTIONS WHETHER A REFERENDUM COULD BE USED TO REVERSE AN ACTION PREVIOUSLY APPROVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL.”
ADDING, IT’S AWAITING A FINAL LEGAL DECISION BEFORE COMMENTING FURTHER.
DICKENS ARGUES THE FACILITY WILL HELP THE CITY RETAIN AND HIRE MUCH-NEEDED OFFICERS AND REPLACE OUTDATED AND RUNDOWN OPERATIONS.
THE SITE WHERE THE FACILITY IS TO BE BUILT HAS BEEN AT THE CENTER OF PROTESTS BY CIVIL RIGHTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS.
THEY SAY THE FORESTED AREA JUST OUTSIDE OF ATLANTA AND IN A PREDOMINANTLY BLACK NEIGHBORHOOD SHOULD BE PRESERVED.
CITY OFFICIALS CLAIM THE PROTESTS, SOME OF WHICH HAVE BECOME VIOLENT, HAVE CAUSED THE PRICE OF THE PROJECT TO GO UP BY NEARLY 20 MILLION DOLLARS.
