[JACK AYLMER]
IN MICHIGAN, AN OLD TRADITION AMONG VOTERS IS GETTING A NEW TWIST.
THE STATE’S ‘I VOTED’ STICKERS WILL FEATURE NINE NEW DESIGNS FROM MICHIGANDERS WHO WERE CHOSEN FROM A POOL OF COMPETITORS IN THE WOLVERINE STATE’S FIRST EVER ‘I VOTED STICKER’ CONTEST.
OR SHOULD WE CALL IT THE WEREWOLF STATE?
THAT’S THE WORK OF 12-YEAR-OLD MICHIGAN MIDDLE SCHOOLER JANE – AND WILL BE AMONG THE STICKERS VOTERS GET TO CHOOSE FROM AFTER CASTING THEIR BALLOTS.
HER DRAWING OF THE BEAST GARNERED THE MOST VOTES– WITH MORE THAN 20 THOUSAND– BEATING OUT THE NEAREST CONTESTANT BY NEARLY TWO-THOUSAND VOTES.
THE STICKER EVEN CLAWED ITS WAY ONTO SOCIAL MEDIA.
DEREK DOBIES, THE CHIEF OF STAFF OF THE MICHIGAN A-F-L C-I-O WRITING ON X:
“IF THERE IS EVER A YEAR TO HAVE AN UNHINGED WEREWOLF RIPPING ITS SHIRT OFF AS THE ‘I VOTED’ STICKER… IT’S 2024.”
THE DESIGNS RANGE FROM FOLKLORE TO FOLKSY.

AND SO, THE WORD OPE IS SOMETHING THAT I NOTICED WHEN I SAID IT, WHEN I NOTICED PEOPLE IN MICHIGAN SAY IT, I JUST, I DOVE HARD INTO IT.
THE STATE RECEIVED MORE THAN 480 SUBMISSIONS– FROM PEOPLE OF ALL AGES.
THE CONTEST IS THE IDEA OF MICHIGAN’S COLLEGIATE STUDENT ADVISORY TASK FORCE– A GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO HELP ENCOURAGE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT.
THE TASK FORCE’S CHAIR SAID THE GROUP BECAME INSPIRED BY A SIMILAR CONTEST IN NEW YORK, WHERE A 14-YEAR-OLD’S DRAWING WENT VIRAL.
