Biden boosts electric battery production; More Oath Keepers go on trial; and nods to Hollywood’s hottest. These stories and more highlight the midday rundown, aimed down the middle, for Monday, Dec. 12, 2022. 

Biden to fund domestic EV battery production

A government loan of $2.5 billion will be going to General Motors and LG Energy Solutions for the opening of three battery manufacturing plants in Ohio, Tennessee and Michigan.

This is on top of another $2.8 billion grant the administration announced two months ago toward the same goal, to boost domestic battery production. So half of all new cars can be electric by 2030.

Second trial for Oath Keepers underway

Four more members of the Oath Keepers are now on trial. The Justice Department is trying them for seditious conspiracy. The members are on trial for the same charges the group’s founder and another member were convicted of two weeks ago. It was the first time in decades people have been charged with seditious conspiracy.

This is the second trial for Oath Keepers present at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Kari Lake sues, asks court to declare her winner

It’s been one week since Arizona certified their election results. But Republican candidate Kari Lake, who lost the race for governor is suing, saying those results are wrong. She says she should be declared the winner.

Lake is first asking the court to declare her the next governor of Arizona, despite losing to Democrat Katie Hobbs in the midterms. If the court doesn’t take this action, Lake’s request is to void the election results and conduct the 2022 election again altogether.

Hobbs defeated Lake by 17,000 votes, less than 1% point.

Big pharma settles another opioid lawsuit

Big pharma has reached yet another settlement with states, accusing them of playing a part in the opioid crisis battering communities.

California announced a $5.7 billion settlement today with Walgreens just one month after a $3.1 billion settlement with Walmart. The state is still working out settlement details with CVS.

This settlement is separate from a major lawsuit where big pharma agreed to pay $13.8 billion to settle thousands of other state and local lawsuits.

Golden Globes comeback after controversy

“Congratulations to all our nominees. Please join us for Hollywood’s party of the year on Tuesday, January 10th for the 80th Golden Globe awards,” Helen Hoehne said, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The nominees for the 80th Golden Globe awards have been announced. The awards show will return to NBC on Jan. 10. There was no broadcasted awards show last year after controversy over lack of diversity knocked the Golden Globes off TV.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” tops the film category and “Abbott Elementary” led the way in T.V.

Therapy dog visits children in Ukraine

16 boys and girls in Ukraine were greeted with a friendly face, therapy dog “Bice.” An American pit bull terrier with an important job: Warming the hearts of children who have experienced trauma in the war-torn country of Ukraine.

Bice gives love and gets it in return with a big group hug at the end of the children’s therapy session.

FOUR MORE MEMBERS OF THE OATH KEEPERS ARE NOW ON TRIAL. THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT IS TRYING THEM FOR SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY. THE SAME CHARGES THE GROUP’S FOUNDER AND ANOTHER MEMBER WERE CONVICTED OF TWO WEEKS AGO.

IT WAS THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES PEOPLE HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY.

THIS IS THE SECOND TRIAL FOR OATH KEEPERS PRESENT AT THE CAPITOL ON JANUARY SIXTH.

KARI LAKE SUES, ASKS COURT TO DECLARE HER WINNER

IT’S BEEN ONE WEEK SINCE ARIZONA CERTIFIED THEIR ELECTION RESULTS.
BUT REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE KARI LAKE, WHO LOST THE RACE FOR GOVERNOR, IS SUING, SAYING THOSE RESULTS ARE WRONG. AND SAYS SHE SHOULD STILL BE DECLARED THE WINNER.

LAKE IS FIRST ASKING THE COURT TO DECLARE LAKE THE NEXT GOVERNOR OF ARIZONA, DESPITE LOSING TO DEMOCRAT KATIE HOBBS IN THE MIDTERMS.

IF THE COURT DOESN’T TAKE THIS ACTION, THEN LAKE’S REQUEST IS TO VOID THE ELECTION RESULTS AND RE-CONDUCT THE 20-22 ELECTION ALTOGETHER.
