T-Mobile says 37 million customers were hacked; Google lays off 10,000 employees; and the U.S. is sending $2.5 billion in military aid to Ukraine. Those stories and more make up the morning rundown Friday, Jan. 20, 2023.

T-mobile breach affects 37 million customers

T-mobile says an “unidentified malicious intruder” breached its network in late November, but the company saying they didn’t discover the hack until Jan. 5.

Some 37 million T-Mobile customers are said to have been affected. Customer information like addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth were reportedly stolen.

The company says sensitive information like passwords, bank accounts, saved credit cards, and Social Security numbers remain secure and untouched by the breach.

The company is still investigating with the help of federal agencies.

Google slashes 12,000 jobs in latest layoff

Earlier this week, we reported Microsoft is laying off 10,000 of its workers. And now, the latest layoffs in the technology sector are coming from Google’s parent company, Alphabet.

Google is slashing 12,000 jobs effective immediately. which is roughly 6% of its workforce. The industry is facing economic uncertainty in 2023.

Facebook’s parent company Meta, and Amazon, recently announced similar plans to lay off thousands of employees.

Biden comments on classified documents

President Joe Biden held a press conference in California to discuss the flood damage there, but the focus quickly shifted to the classified documents found in his Delaware home.

Biden said he has no regrets on his team’s handling of the classified materials, including not to disclose the existence of documents before the midterm election.

$2.5 billion military aid for Ukraine

The U.S. is sending hundreds of armored vehicles and rockets to Ukraine as part of a $2.5 billion military aid package. The total U.S. military assistance for Ukraine is now up to an unprecedented $27.5 billion.

Included in the aid to Ukraine are 90 Stryker armored personnel carriers, 59 Bradley fighting vehicles, more than 100,000 artillery rounds, eight Avenger air defense systems, and 2,000 rockets.

Friday, top Russian officials said that relations with the U.S. are at an all-time historic low. They added that there is “no hope for improvement in the foreseeable future.”

Rock legend David Crosby dies

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer David Crosby has died at the age of 81.

Crosby was a singer, songwriter, and guitarist in the classic-rock era of the 60s and 70s. He was a founding member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

The singer was also well-known outside of the music realm for what some call a troubled personal life. He was a drug addict, which could have exacerbated his health issues. The rock legend died after a long illness.

Man survives 24 days lost at sea

Elvis Francois spent 24 days lost at sea and says he survived thanks to a bottle of ketchup.

Francois said was making repairs to his boat in December when bad weather dragged his boat out to sea. He had etched the word “help” into his sailboat and it was seen by someone flying over.

He had ketchup and garlic powder stashed on board that he portioned out to survive. Navy doctors say the Dominica sailor was found to be in good health.
