Now that Super Bowl 59 is in the books and the Philadelphia Eagles are preparing for their victory parade, the rest of the league is trying to figure out how to catch them.
There isn’t really an NFL offseason anymore, it’s a year-round business. These upcoming dates prove
the work never stops. In two weeks time, the league will converge on Indianapolis for the college scouting combine. A week after that ends, negotiations with free agents will begin. From there, its full speed ahead with the league meetings in Palm Beach, and the Draft in Green Bay in late April, and in mid-May, the release of the regular season schedule which has become an event all its own.
Before long, training camps will be starting in earnest. How will teams change between now and then? There is already big news in San Francisco where the 49ers are allowing star receiver Deebo Samuel to seek a trade.
The Rams, an NFC west rival, is also looking to shop an older, higher paid receiver in Cooper Kupp.
The two teams in the Super Bowl both have some big-time free agents pending. Like linebackers Zach Baun and Nick Bolton, will they return to run it back?
And the New York Jets under new leadership, have decided they don’t want Aaron Rodgers to be their quarterback. Rodgers knew it was a possibility back on New Year’s Day.
“If I’m a part of the change, then I just want to make sure everybody knows that I have nothing but gratitude for my time here. It’s been a great experience all around, and again, I’m disappointed about the performance of both myself and as a team, but really thankful for the opportunity.”
The question is will he play a 21st season somewhere else?
Along with Rodgers, where will Russell Wilson and Sam Darnold wind up? The NFL Draft will bring some new talent most notably, a few big time quarterbacks, like Miami’s Cam Ward.
Will the Tennessee Titans take a quarterback with the top pick? or will they trade that pick for several others?
Six of the teams in the draft’s Top 10 have new coaches, four have new general managers. None of them had over five wins.
John Spytek, the new GM in Las Vegas, said in his opening press conference everything is on the table.
“We will literally go anywhere in the country, anywhere in Canada, to find a good football player and you know I’m always reminded the way that they started in Seattle at the quarterback position in particular they just kept taking shots and shots and shots, they traded, they drafted guys high, they find their way to Russell. I mean what an unbelievable move that was.”
Thinking outside the box.. Yes there are lots of questions and there are bound to be some surprising moves between now and kickoff, September 4th, when the Eagles begin defense of their title. Take your vacations right now football fans!
