NEW YORK CITY IS ROLLING OUT A FLEET OF SOLAR-POWERED SCHOOL BUSES.
THESE VEHICLES WILL NOT ONLY TRANSPORT STUDENTS-
BUT ALSO HELP POWER THE COMMUNITY.
THE BUSES ESSENTIALLY ACT AS LARGE BATTERIES-
WITH THE ABILITY TO SAVE SURPLUS ENERGY THAT SCHOOL DISTRICTS CAN SELL BACK TO THE GRID WHEN NEEDED.
THIS NEW INITIATIVE IS A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN NEW YORK’S UTILITY COMPANY, CON EDISON, AND FIRST STUDENT, THE COUNTRY’S LARGEST SCHOOL BUS OPERATOR.
CON EDISON SAYS ITS INVESTED NINE MILLION DOLLARS IN THIS PROGRAM-
WHICH OFFICIALS TOUT AS A CLEANER WAY TO GET KIDS TO SCHOOL-
WHILE AVOIDING THE POTENTIAL HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH THE POLLUTANTS FROM DIESEL POWERED TRANSPORTATION.
THE SOLAR BUSES ARE PART OF A SMART ENERGY HUB THAT INCLUDES A TWO-MEGAWATT BATTERY SYSTEM AND A 500-KILOWATT SOLAR ARRAY AT THE DEPOT.
TOGETHER, THESE COMPONENTS CREATE A MICROGRID THAT STORES POWER COLLECTED BY THE BUSES-
DELIVERING THIS ENERGY BACK TO THE LOCAL UTILITY DURING PERIODS OF HIGH DEMAND.
IN TOTAL, TWELVE ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUSES WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH ROOFTOP SOLAR PANELS, REPLACING DIESEL BUSES AT FIRST STUDENT’S BROOKLYN DEPOT.
FOUR OF THESE BUSES ARE ALREADY ON THE ROAD, WITH THE REST SET TO ROLL OUT NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.
