IN AN EFFORT TO ENHANCE SAFETY, THE NEW YORK POLICE DEPARTMENT DEPLOYED ADDITIONAL OFFICERS TO THE TRANSIT SYSTEM IN MARCH.
AND IT APPEARS TO BE MAKING A DIFFERENCE.
SO FAR THIS YEAR, MAJOR FELONIES IN THE SUBWAY SYSTEM HAVE DROPPED BY MORE THAN SIX PERCENT COMPARED TO A YEAR AGO, ACCORDING TO N-Y-P-D DATA.
ROBBERIES HAVE SEEN THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DECLINE AT 25 PERCENT.
DESPITE THIS POSITIVE TREND, MURDERS HAVE DOUBLED SINCE LAST YEAR WITH FOUR REPORTED IN THE FIRST FOUR MONTHS OF 2024 COMPARED TO TWO LAST YEAR. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NO MURDERS IN THE SUBWAY SYSTEM DURING APRIL.
THE MOST RECENT SUBWAY HOMICIDE HAPPENED IN MARCH, WHEN JASON VOLZ WAS HIT AND KILLED BY A SUBWAY AFTER BEING SHOVED ONTO THE TRACKS.
IN RESPONSE TO RISING CONCERNS, THE CITY HAS INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE IN THE TRANSIT SYSTEM
AND ARRESTS ARE NOW UP 50 PERCENT SO FAR THIS YEAR.
FARE EVASION ARRESTS ARE UP MORE THAN 90 PERCENT AND ARRESTS OF PEOPLE CARRYING KNIVES AND FIREARMS ARE UP AT LEAST 60 PERCENT.
IN ADDITION, TO AN INCREASE IN POLICE, MAYOR ERIC ADAMS ANNOUNCED PLANS TO INTRODUCE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TECHNOLOGY TO DETECT WEAPONS AT SUBWAY TURNSTILES IN THE COMING MONTHS.
THE N-Y-P-D’S TRANSIT BUREAU EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF CONTINUED VIGILANCE IN ENSURING RIDER SAFETY.
BUT SAID, “OUR HARD WORK IS PAYING OFF AND THE SUBWAY SYSTEM IS ALL THE SAFER FOR IT.”
