Elon Musk tweeted there’s a massive red wave coming in 2022 after he voted Republican for the first time in his life. That vote went to Congresswoman Mayra Flores, a Latina Republican who flipped a democratic congressional seat in south Texas.
Rep. Mayra Flores – R-TX says: “We want to be heard. And we are tired of being taken for granted and treated like second class citizens.”
Musk is not the only one making the switch. More than one million voters in 43 states became Republicans in the last year. That’s according to data from the political firm L2 that was analyzed by the Associated Press.
The biggest switches are happening in big suburban areas around Denver, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Cleveland. There are also voters flipping in the suburbs around smaller cities like Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Raleigh, North Carolina and Des Moines, Iowa.
A total of about 1.7 million people have switched parties in the last year, one million joining the GOP and approximately 630 thousand becoming democrats.
Now it is primary season so it’s possible some people switched parties so they can vote for a specific candidate in a closed primary election. In fact, Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney is asking Wyoming Democrats to do exactly that, since support among republicans in that state has fallen since she became Vice Chair of the January 6th investigative committee.
But some aren’t happy with the current state of politics. Colorado Resident Ben Smith said of his switch “It’s more so a rejection of the left than embracing the right.” Jessica Kroells said she was a reliable democratic voter until 2016, but says “The party itself is no longer Democrat, it’s progressive socialism.”
Voters switching to Republican is a reversal from the Trump Administration, when more Americans became Democrats. Straight From DC, I’m Ray Bogan.
