IT’S MORE BAD NEWS FOR THE U.S. OFFSHORE WIND INDUSTRY.
LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER CANCELING TWO PLANNED WIND FARMS NEAR NEW JERSEY, DANISH ENERGY COMPANY ORSTED IS RUNNING INTO ADDITIONAL PROBLEMS.
THEY’VE BEEN WORKING ON SOMETHING CALLED REVOLUTION WIND-
A PLANNED OFFSHORE WIND PROJECT FOR THE COASTS OF RHODE ISLAND AND CONNECTICUT.
BUT NOW THIS DEVELOPMENT IS FACING A MAJOR DELAY-
THE COMPANY ANNOUNCING THIS WEEK ITS START DATE IS BEING PUSHED BACK BY A YEAR, AND WON’T BE EXPECTED TO START PRODUCING ENERGY UNTIL 20-26.
THE PROBLEM STEMS FROM A FORMER NAVAL BASE.
ORSTED IS PARTNERING WITH EVERSOURCE ENERGY TO BUILD A SUBSTATION THERE FOR ITS WIND FARM.
LINGERING SOIL CONTAMINATION AT THE BASE IS TAKING MORE TIME THAN EXPECTED TO CORRECT.
THIS IS LEADING TO A DELAY FOR THE REVOLUTION WIND PROJECT.
ONCE COMPLETE, THE OFFSHORE WIND FACILITY IS EXPECTED TO GENERATE ENOUGH ELECTRICITY TO POWER ABOUT 350,000 HOMES.
HOWEVER, RESIDENTS OF CONNECTICUT AND RHODE ISLAND WILL NOW HAVE TO WAIT A BIT LONGER TO UTILIZE THAT RENEWABLE ENERGY.
