Over 300,000 displaced after flooding in Myanmar, rescue missions underway

A human catastrophe is unfolding in Asia. More than 100 people are dead after Typhoon Yagi caused severe flooding in several countries, including Myanmar. The government in Myanmar is now conducting a rescue mission to try to find survivors. The storm and the severe flooding it caused already displaced more than 300,000 people. That number continues to rise as search crews find more survivors.

Typhoon Yagi is the strongest storm, to hit Asia this year. Flood waters wiped out towns. Information about the damage is also limited due to damaged infrastructure, as well as downed power lines and internet lines.

Myanmar has roughly 55 million people. Many are now in need of humanitarian assistance from agencies such as the Red Cross. However, such assistance is difficult because much of the country’s infrastructure needs to be rebuilt.

The head of Myanmar’s military government has now requested aid from foreign countries. The flooding in Myanmar began on Monday, Sept. 9, and waters remained high for a week.

The typhoon also hit Vietnam, Thailand and Laos.
