Senior FBI officials have been told they’ll be fired Monday, Feb. 3, if they don’t resign or retire first, according to a CNN report. The employees are either executive assistant directors or special agents in charge and were promoted to their current positions by former Director Christopher Wray.

Patel had a contentious hearing on Capitol Hill Thursday, Jan. 30, as he works his way through the Senate confirmation process. Wray resigned earlier this month after President Trump announced he would be nominating a new director. The FBI is currently being led by acting Director Brian Driscoll.

The Times also reported that agents who participated in the Trump investigations have taken steps to retire or leave the agency. That includes an agent who worked on the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and the inquiry into the president’s handling of classified documents.

Trump has said he wants to weed out people who he believes weaponized the federal government against him. CNN reported that some agents say that ignores the fact agents are not allowed to choose which investigations they are assigned to.

During his confirmation hearing, Patel denied knowledge of plans to punish or fire those who have investigated Trump.

“Are you aware of any plans or discussions to punish in any way, including termination, FBI agents or personnel associated with Trump investigations?” Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., asked Patel.

“I am not aware of that senator,” Patel answered.

Some Republicans agree with President Trump and Patel’s statements that investigations into the president have been tainted by bias. But Patel was warned not to go too far.

“You’ve got to find out who the bad people are and get rid of them, in accordance with due process and the rule of law. And then you’ve got to lift up the good people,” Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said. “Don’t go over there and burn that place down. Go over there and make it better.”

The Times is now reporting that the Trump administration plans to examine officers involved in investigations tied to the president and his supporters, which could lead to what the outlet described as a “purge.”

Stanford Law School professors Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried are meeting about potentially securing clemency for their 32-year-old son. Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to pay $11 billion in restitution. He was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme that included illegally taking customer funds from his crypto exchange, FTX, to cover losses for its sister company.

What happened with SBF and FTX?

FTX filed for bankruptcy in 2022 after a tumultuous week that sent shockwaves through the crypto world. A surge of FTX customers tried withdrawing funds after stories dropped about shady accounting. FTX couldn’t meet the demand and collapsed.

Bankman-Fried, commonly referred to as SBF, lost control of the company. Corporate turnaround specialist John J. Ray III took over to shepherd the company through bankruptcy. Ray is famous for his role in recovering funds from the Enron scandal.

“This is really old-fashioned embezzlement,” Ray told Congress. “This is just taking money from customers and using it for your own purpose. Not sophisticated at all. Sophisticated, perhaps, in the way they were able to sort of hide it from people, frankly, right in front of their eyes.”

In August 2024, a U.S. court ordered FTX to pay $12.7 billion in relief funds to victims.

In October, a court approved its bankruptcy plan, which allows FTX to use as much as $16.5 billion in assets to repay customers.

In September, SBF filed an appeal to overturn his fraud conviction. In the appeal, his attorney blasted Judge Lewis Kaplan for not giving him a fair trial. He argued the judge hampered SBF’s defense by not allowing him to argue that FTX users didn’t actually lose money since they are set to recover funds from the bankruptcy process.

Which other crypto convict did Trump already pardon?

The president made a slew of pardons his first week in office, including one pushed by the crypto industry and libertarians.

At the Libertarian National Convention ahead of the election, Trump promised he would pardon Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the dark web black market site, Silk Road.

“If you vote for me, on day one, I will commute the sentence of Ross Ulbrich to a sentence of time served,” Trump said at the time. “He’s already served 11 years; we’re going to get them home.”

Ulbricht was convicted of drug trafficking, money laundering and computer hacking. The government said he also solicited six murder-for-hire schemes, including one against a former Silk Road employee.

However, Ulbricht had the strong support of the crypto community. Silk Road was an early marketplace to exclusively use Bitcoin. Bankman-Fried doesn’t seem to have the same type of advocacy movement behind him, but he may have common ground with Trump.

The judge who sentenced SBF is the same one who presided over the president’s sexual assault case brought by E. Jean Carroll. Trump previously called Kaplan a “bully” and “abusive.”

Trump’s use of pardons early in his term contrasts with what he did in his first term. Most of his clemency orders came toward the end of his presidency. The pardons seen so far mostly line up with campaign promises, like pardoning roughly 1,500 supporters connected to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

U.S. export controls bar Nvidia from selling the most advanced AI chips to Chinese companies. The U.S. suspects DeepSeek might have gotten around the restriction using third parties in Singapore.

DeepSeek disrupts AI race

During the week of Jan. 26, DeepSeek disrupted the AI race with its chatbot R1. It dethroned OpenAI’s ChatGPT on top of the Apple App Store chart and tanked tech stocks in the process.

Nvidia’s stock is still down about 12% from its share price last Friday. The company shed around $600 billion in market cap on DeepSeek’s arrival. It’s the biggest one-day loss for a U.S. company in history. The higher you climb, the farther you fall.

A big driver to what’s damaging other tech companies is the price DeepSeek claims to have paid to train its high-performing chatbot. According to its research paper, DeepSeek used inferior Nvidia H800 chips to build it and spent just $6 million to train it. But many aren’t buying it.

“I do not believe that DeepSeek was done all above board. That’s nonsense,” said Howard Lutnick, President Donald Trump’s pick for commerce secretary. “They stole things. They broke in. They’ve taken our IP. It’s got to end. And I’m going to be rigorous in our pursuit of restrictions and enforcing those restrictions to keep us in the lead because we must stay in the lead.”

“It doesn’t seem like it’s an obvious red flag that this cannot have been done,” said Tara Javidi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at UCSD. “Many of us have been doing research in the space, in various aspects of the space, to make the training process cheaper, to make the models smaller, to really think about open-sourcing.”

“When people report the cost of training, they report the cost of training for their last successful attempt where it went through,” she added, indicating DeepSeek’s $6 million total wouldn’t include any previous failed attempts.

Nvidia responds to reports

Since DeepSeek’s arrival, Nvidia has come out saying it doesn’t believe DeepSeek broke any rules. Nvidia told Bloomberg it insists its customers comply with the law and act accordingly if they don’t.

Earlier this month, Nvidia publicly criticized the Biden administration over the export controls put in place. The company said it was looking forward to working with Trump.

I want to bring in Tara Javidi, Lewak Endowed Chair and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCSD. Tara, you’ve read DeepSeek’s research paper. I know it’s a lengthy one. Do you believe that they were able to achieve what they have using the modified chips and as little money as they claim?

Tara Javidi: So thank you for having me. Yes, I’ve been looking at this. So I think there are multiple ways to answer this question. Of course, as an academic researcher, I don’t have investigation possibility of knowing the details of their implementation. But I can tell you that a lot of the components of the study are really pulling together lots of work and innovation that has been in the open research space throughout the years. So they have managed to pull that. So in that aspect, the results are not so surprising in the sense of pulling it together. It doesn’t seem like it’s an obvious red flag that this cannot have been done. Many of us have been doing research in the space, in various aspects of the space, to make the training process cheaper, to make the models smaller, to really think about open-sourcing, maybe possibly some of the larger models and questions of this sort have been thrown around in the research community. And then when people report the cost of training, they report the cost of training for their last successful attempt where it went through. They don’t usually report all those other sort of, I have to stop, something was not right, I have to redo. So those are not reported as it’s never reported in any of these studies and including for the DeepSeq. So it’s a little bit of a complicated story there when we talk about the cost of training and whether a big company that already has a nice secret sauce with the training of large models and they have this sort of long training pipeline. whether they will want to take the same risk and really try these more, these methods that are more researchy and are proposed to do this. And this is sort of definitely a bit of the hallmark of this study and the work that has been put out by DeepSea.

Simone Del Rosario: Well, let me ask you this, how is DeepSeek different from OpenAI’s chat GPT and other language learning models?

Tara Javidi: So I guess the most important fact for many of us in the research community is that it’s a large model that is yet open source. And most of the open source efforts that we have seen previously have been at the smaller, what is called smaller model. I want to emphasize these models are still quite large in terms of the number of parameters. So that’s the one piece that is different is that this model, despite the fact that it’s large, it’s open source. Another fact is that it incorporates many methods, as I was saying, from the research community in terms of trying to make the efficiency of the training much more than classical methods that have been proposed for training these large models. So in that sense, the training process itself has been made much more efficient in their cycle.

Simone Del Rosario: Look, with a lot of attention comes a lot of people poking around. Security researchers are finding DeepSeek to be very vulnerable to malicious attacks. We saw that on Monday when they had to actually stop allowing new users to come on board. They limited it to Chinese phone numbers for a bit. But since then, the subsequent research has shown that it is very vulnerable. Is that the risk of being open source or is there something more here?

Tara Javidi: Yeah, I haven’t followed that precisely, but what I can say is that it’s a combination most probably of the process of training and making a model robust. You usually often try to make it robust by ingesting more data and classical ways of dealing with robustness is actually making sure that you build safeguards and these safeguards require you to really think about constructing data and queries that are adversarial to build that. So it could be a byproduct of trying to be very efficient in the first round. You might miss some of the ability to build these safeguards. Of course, if a model is open source, the real difficulty of, know, the economics of this. It’s a lot of work and effort to build a model. And so when you put it open source, anybody can sort of have access to the model to fine tune it, to train it and use it for other. So there are two levels of robustness issues that comes in. one is that your weights are known and the source, the model is known. So the source is available for people to sort of build other things. And that’s one form of lack of robustness. And the other one is sort of safeguarding it against jail breaks and like, you know, getting it to do things that you didn’t mean to build into that.

Simone Del Rosario: So with all of that in mind, do you think that DeepSeek is a worthy competitor in this space right now?

Tara Javidi: In engineering, usually when when the first study that proves something that was imagined to be plausible, yet nobody was doing it, when when that happens, it sort of gives this sense what is doable or what is plausible, sort of brings that. It has definitely, for me, it has been a sort of a point of reference that looking at this now I can be more forceful talking to, for example, federal agencies and really thinking about more support for this kind of foundational research and academic institution. This is a good possibility study to say this is possible and it’s not something that we only need very established methods. That’s the only way that works. It opens the door for a lot of fundamental research at universities to be gaining attention. So in that sense, for academics, this has been a really interesting study to pay attention to.

Simone Del Rosario: Yeah, it opens it up beyond saying, well, only a Microsoft or a Meta or an OpenAI is able to develop something like this.

Tara Javidi: Yeah, and also only the sort of more robust and economically certain paths of doing this kind of model training is the only way to do. As I said, as I was trying and I don’t know if I did a good job as I was trying to explain at the beginning is that when you are a company, you really have you have an obligation really to be picking, you know, sort of the risks that you are taking in a much more calculated way than if you’re doing research at a university. So that has been a major sort of question that we do open in the open research community. We do advocate certain ways of training to modify the understood ways to enable for more efficient training for smaller models for compression and so on and so forth. But we don’t expect that large companies to just jump on that research and immediately do it because of the financial implications. So I think in that sense this is an interesting study for those of us who have been in the research community because it validates, at least on the surface, validates a lot of the sort of open, the kind of questions that have been in the public domain in the research space.

Journalist Sarah Hagi shared translated screenshots of Gascón’s past tweets before they were deleted.

One tweet from 2016 read:

“Islam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured.”

Another post criticized the way Muslim women dress.

The Hollywood Bureau of the Muslim Public Affairs Council responded to the resurfaced posts. Senior Vice President Sue Obeidi released a statement to The Wrap condemning the remarks.

“Deleted or not, these tweets are hurtful, offensive, and shocking, most especially coming from someone who is a member of another vulnerable community,” Obeidi said. “Muslims are part of every community, including the transgender community.”

Tweet about George Floyd sparks additional criticism

Gascón also made controversial statements following the 2020 death of George Floyd.

She tweeted:

“I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider Black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins.”

According to Deadline, Gascón has also been accused of using slurs against LGBTQ+ individuals.

Her account on X is currently deactivated.

Critics call for the Academy to take action

With Gascón’s nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards, critics argue the resurfaced posts should factor into the Academy’s decision.

One X user wrote:

“A person like that cannot win an Oscar. A person like that is not a person. Racist, homophobic, xenophobic—Karla Sofía really is an unpleasant being.”

More controversy: Feud with Fernanda Torres?

In addition to the backlash over her past tweets, Gascón was also caught in another controversy involving fellow Best Actress nominee Fernanda Torres.

During a Jan. 28 interview, Gascón expressed concerns about negative comments online. She stated that individuals associated with Torres were attempting to discredit her and “Emilia Pérez.”

However, she later clarified that she was referring to general social media toxicity, not Torres or her team.

Karla Sofía Gascón issues apology

Following the backlash, Gascón apologized in a statement to CNN.

“As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well, and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain,” she said. “All my life, I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

Her Oscar nomination marks a historic moment, making her the first openly transgender actress nominated in an acting category.

However, with controversy surrounding “Emilia Pérez” and her resurfaced tweets, the road to the Academy Awards is proving to be complicated.

Just days after the film “Emilia Perez” faced heavy criticism on social media for its portrayal of certain groups, the film’s star—Karla Sofia Gascon—is under fire for resurfaced social media posts.

The transgender actress faces backlash after screenshots of her now-deleted tweets began circulating online.

A journalist shared translated versions of Gascon’s posts before they were deleted. One post from 2016 reads: “Islam is becoming a hotbed of infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured.”

Another post criticizes the way Muslim women dress, saying: “What a DEEP DISGUSTING HUMANITY.”

In response, the Hollywood Bureau of the Muslim Public Affairs Council released a statement to The Wrap, saying: “Deleted or not, these tweets are hurtful, offensive, and shocking, most especially coming from someone who is a member of another vulnerable community. Muslims are part of every community, including the transgender community.”

Gascon also sparked outrage over a post from 2020 following the death of George Floyd, saying: “I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys without rights and consider policemen to be assassins.”

According to Deadline, Gascon also used slurs against the LGBTQ-plus community in past posts.

But as of Friday, Gascon’s X account appears to be deactivated.

The actress is the first openly transgender actress to receive an Oscar nomination. With the timing of these old posts resurfacing, critics argue the Academy should take this into consideration.

One user writes: “A person like that cannot win an Oscar, a person like that is not a person, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, Karla Sofia really is an unpleasant being.”

Separately, Gascon was also at the center of another controversy earlier this week, involving fellow Best Actress nominee Fernanda Torres and whether or not Gascon violated Oscar rules by trying to harm the image of another Oscar nominee.

During a January 28th interview, Gascon expressed concerns about negative comments on social media, stating individuals associated with Torres were attempting to discredit her and the “Emilia Perez” film.

However, Gascon later clarified that she was referring to general social media toxicity and not directly accusing Torres or her team, meaning she did not violate Oscar rules.

As for her resurfaced tweets, Gascon has issued an apology to CNN, saying in part: “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

What prevented emergency crews from saving the driver?

Officers attempted to rescue the driver, who was trapped inside, but the intensity of the flames and heat prevented them from reaching the person.

Firefighters responded, but efforts to extinguish the fire were complicated by the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery, which caused flames to shoot up 5 to 10 feet into the air. The driver, who was the sole occupant, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

How dangerous are lithium-ion battery fires?

This incident marks the latest example of the safety challenges emergency crews can face when responding to electric vehicle crashes.

A 2020 report from the National Transportation Safety Board states that lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles can present hazards such as reignition and electric shock, while first responders try to suppress flames that can burn over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than a gas-powered vehicle fire.

What happens next?

Authorities have not yet identified the victim. The Torrance Police Department is continuing to investigate the crash and has urged anyone with information to come forward.

The Albany Times Union reported that Zajko purchased two hand guns found at the scene of Maland’s death. The guns were allegedly used by the accused killer, Teresa Youngblut.

Youngblut’s passenger, Felix Bauckholt, a German citizen, who was also armed, was fatally shot by agents at the scene after Youngblut reportedly opened fire, killing Maland.

Youngblut was taken into custody and remains behind bars in Vermont.

What other cases is Zajko wanted in by police?

Meanwhile, as the search for Zajko continues, the Times Union said she is also wanted for the shooting deaths of her parents inside their Pennsylvania home in January 2023.

Zajko is also a “person of interest” in another murder of a California landlord earlier this year.

Police were able to make an arrest in the case, finding the suspect had a close relationship with Yungbluth.

According to court records, the pair was in “frequent contact with each other” prior to the killings on opposite sides of the country, just three days apart.

How are the people involved connected to a cult?

The alleged cult comes in as investigators connect the dots between all of the individuals allegedly involved in the killings.

Authorities believe the suspects are all part of an extremist group in the San Francisco area run by a transgender woman, legally named Jack Lasota, who goes by the name “Ziz.”

According to court records, Ziz takes on a violent philosophy based on veganism, artificial intelligence and transgenderism.

What is rationalism?

In a Friday, Jan. 31 episode of the “TrueAnon” podcast titled “Evil Gods Must Be Fought: the Zizian Murder Cult,” the hosts discuss the group, which contains members who call themselves “Zizians” and follow the theory of rationalism.

“They all basically kind of meet under this big world view, which is basically the belief that nothing like no fear of political correctness or uncontrollable or unwanted emotion should get in the way of a human’s ability to see the world as it is,” host Liz Franczak said.

The Associated Press reported Ziz is currently facing charges of obstructing law enforcement and disorderly conduct in Pennsylvania.

Authorities haven’t said whether those charges are related to the murder of Zajko’s parents, but court records show police were searching for a gun used in the killings when they arrested Ziz 12 days later at a hotel about 10 miles from the scene of the killings.

Ziz also previously lived at the property in California belonging to Curtis Lind, the landlord who was killed.

His death on Jan. 17 came two years after he survived a samurai sword attack allegedly carried out by two known Zizians who lived in box trucks on his property.

Ziz was not named in that case.

How are the victims’ families responding?

Lind’s family posted a message on GoFundMe about his death.

“His murder was a senseless act,” Lind’s GoFundMe page stated. “He was a senior citizen trying to live his life to the best of his abilities despite how much he was going through physically and mentally after being attacked 2 years ago.”

What happens next?

The suspect in the Lind case, Maximilian Snyder, is scheduled to make a court appearance on Feb. 6.

The family of Maland, the border agent who was killed, said he was “a devoted agent who served with honor and bravery. He had a tremendous respect and pride for the work he did; he truly embodied service over self.”

Youngblut, who’s charged in that murder, is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 7.

As for the current manhunt for Zajko, police believe she is driving a green 2013 Subaru Outback with an expired Vermont registration.

12,000 North Koreans went to fight for Russia, now they’re nowhere to be found

The Armed Forces of Ukraine said on Friday, Jan. 31, soldiers have not seen North Korean troops on the front lines in Russia’s Kursk region in several weeks. A spokesperson for Ukraine’s military special forces told CNN he believes it is because of all the mass casualties Pyongyang’s soldiers have suffered.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced last week in Davos, Switzerland, that despite Russia’s 60,000 troops and 12,000 North Koreans in Kursk, Ukrainian forces remain in the region, fighting to hold onto Russian land in the hopes of having a better bargaining chip should peace talks start.

Who’s winning in Kursk?

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington D.C.-based think tank, also reports that Kyiv recently made some advancements in Kursk. While Russia’s Defense Ministry said Moscow’s forces recaptured a Kursk village on the border of Russia and Ukraine.

What have North Korean troops been doing?

Ukrainian military officials said they believe Pyongyang sent highly trained soldiers. However, Moscow has really only used them to carry out ground assaults and human-wave attacks, making them easy targets for Ukrainian fighters and drone pilots.

What’s the recent history between Russia and North Korea?

So far, neither Moscow nor Pyongyang has publicly mentioned the presence of North Korean soldiers in Ukraine. Although, as Straight Arrow News reported, months before Pyongyang soldiers went to fight in Russia’s war, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a key defense agreement, promising to aid each other in case of attack.

In addition to the troops, Pyongyang has also supplied Moscow with millions of artillery shells, rockets and missiles, according to Western intelligence.

Massive Calif. solar plant may close years early, saving residents money

Listen

What was once the world’s largest solar plant of its kind may soon shut down more than a decade earlier than planned. This potential closure comes as the facility has struggled to compete with newer, cheaper solar technologies and faced accusations of causing thousands of wildlife deaths.

Why is this solar plant closing so much earlier than expected?

Opened in 2014, the $2.2 billion Ivanpah Solar Power Plant spans five square miles in the Mojave Desert near the California-Nevada border. The facility operates using concentrated solar power technology, which utilizes thousands of mirrors to focus sunlight onto towers to generate steam-powered electricity.

However, utility officials said that cutting ties with the plant could lead to lower energy prices for consumers, as industry advancements in photovoltaic solar panels and battery storage have made other renewable energy sources more cost-effective.

As a result, California’s two largest power providers, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and Southern California Edison, indicated they want to end their contracts with the plant. Southern California Edison is reportedly in discussions for a potential contract buyout, while PG&E has already reached an agreement with Ivanpah’s owners to terminate its contract.

If PG&E’s exit deal is approved by regulators, this would result in two of the plant’s three units shutting down by 2026, 13 years ahead of schedule.

What environmental concerns have been attributed to the solar plant?

The facility has also faced criticism from conservationists, who argue it has harmed local wildlife. Environmental groups claim the plant’s intense solar reflections have caused numerous bird deaths, with around 6,000 being incinerated mid-air every year. Additionally, concerns have been raised about its impact on the habitat of the threatened desert tortoise.

“Along with killing thousands of birds and tortoises, the project’s construction destroyed irreplaceable pristine desert habitat along with numerous rare plant species,” Julia Dowell, a senior campaign organizer at the Sierra Club, an environmental organization, said. “The Ivanpah plant was a financial boondoggle and environmental disaster.”

What happens next?

If the agreements to end its power contracts are finalized, one of Ivanpah’s owners, NRG Energy, has suggested the site may be repurposed for solar panels, but details on the decommissioning process and associated costs have not yet been disclosed.

[Jack Aylmer]

WHAT WAS ONCE THE WORLD’S LARGEST SOLAR POWER PLANT OF ITS KIND MAY SOON CLOSE-

MORE THAN A DECADE BEFORE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO.

UTILITY OFFICIALS SAY CUTTING TIES WITH THE PLANT WILL ACTUALLY RESULT IN CHEAPER ENERGY PRICES FOR CONSUMERS-

AS THE FACILITY HAS ALSO FACED ALLEGATIONS OF BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THOUSANDS OF WILDLIFE DEATHS.

OPENED IN 2014, THE IVANPAH SOLAR POWER PLANT IS LOCATED ACROSS FIVE SQUARE MILES IN THE MOJAVE DESERT NEAR THE CALIFORNIA-NEVADA BORDER.

THE 2.2 BILLION DOLLAR FACILITY HAS STRUGGLED TO COMPETE WITH NEWER, CHEAPER SOLAR TECHNOLOGIES.

THE IVANPAH PLANT OPERATES USING CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER TECHNOLOGY-

IN WHICH THOUSANDS OF MIRRORS FOCUS SUNLIGHT ONTO TOWERS TO GENERATE STEAM-POWERED ELECTRICITY.

BUT INDUSTRY ADVANCEMENTS IN SOLAR PANELS AND BATTERY STORAGE HAVE MADE OTHER RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES MORE COST-EFFECTIVE.

AS A RESULT, CALIFORNIA’S TWO LARGEST POWER PROVIDERS HAVE INDICATED THEY WANT TO TERMINATE THEIR CONTRACTS WITH THE PLANT.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON IS IN TALKS FOR A POTENTIAL BUYOUT OF ITS CONTRACT-

WHILE PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC HAS ALREADY ANNOUNCED AN AGREEMENT WITH THE FACILITY’S OWNERS TO END ITS CONTRACTS.

IF THE CONTRACT TERMINATION WITH PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC IS APPROVED BY REGULATORS-

TWO OF THE PLANT’S THREE UNITS WOULD SHUT DOWN IN 2026-

13 YEARS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.

MEANWHILE, CONSERVATIONISTS HAVE WELCOMED NEWS OF THE IVANPAH PLANT’S POTENTIAL CLOSURE-

CALLING IT AN ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER.

THEY SAY THE FACILITY HAS CAUSED NUMEROUS BIRD DEATHS FROM ITS INTENSE SOLAR REFLECTIONS-

INCINERATING ABOUT 6,000 MID-AIR EVERY YEAR.

AND HAVE ALSO BLAMED THE PLANT FOR DESTROYING HABITATS OF THE THREATENED DESERT TORTOISE.

IF THE AGREEMENTS TO END POWER CONTRACTS WITH IVANPAH ARE FINALIZED-

ITS OWNERS HAVE INDICATED THE SITE MAY BE REPURPOSED FOR SOLAR PANELS IN THE FUTURE-

THOUGH DETAILS ON THE DECOMMISSIONING PROCESS OR FUTURE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TRANSITION HAVE YET TO BE PROVIDED.

China building military base 10x larger than the Pentagon: Report

Listen

How did U.S. officials find out about the base?

Satellite images obtained by the news outlet show about a 1,500-acre site just southwest of Beijing. Intelligence officers believe this complex could be a so-called “doomsday” bunker for the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) to congregate in case of a nuclear war.

When finished, the command center, dubbed “Beijing Military City” makes the current world’s largest military command center, the Pentagon, look relatively small in comparison.

Intelligence experts also noted the images of the construction site, taken in mid-2024, are fitting for Beijing as the PLA prepares for its 100th anniversary in 2027.

What does it have to do with Taiwan?

It also comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping has repeatedly vowed to reunify with Taiwan in 2027, using force if necessary. The self-governing island has defense agreements in place with the United States, and the U.S. is dependent on Taiwan for most of the microchips which make electronics work.

What do we know about the facility so far?

A former CIA analyst told the Financial Times they suspect China’s new facility is meant to enhance Beijing’s “nuclear war-fighting capability.”

Around 100 cranes were observed operating at the three-mile site, constructing underground facilities connected by tunnels.

The Financial Times reported that there is no military presence currently at the site, but it has “all the hallmarks of a sensitive military site.” Popular hiking trails near the installation are closed and access to the grounds is strictly prohibited.

There are also signs warning against flying drones or taking pictures and the back of the project is blocked off by a checkpoint.

What did we know about China’s military expansion plans?

As Straight Arrow News previously reported, Beijing is beefing up its nuclear arsenal and the Pentagon estimates China will have 1,500 nuclear weapons by 2035.

Beijing also appears to be building a massive nuclear fusion center in the southwest city of Mianyang, which could allow for new nuclear weapons designs and the housing of nuclear weapons.

[CRAIG NIGRELLI]

CHINA IS BUILDING THE WORLD’S LARGEST MILITARY COMMAND CENTER.

AT LEAST TEN TIMES BIGGER THAN THE PENTAGON.

THAT’S WHAT U-S INTELLIGENCE OFFICERS TOLD THE FINANCIAL TIMES.

SATELLITE IMAGES OBTAINED BY THE NEWS OUTLET SHOW ABOUT A 15-HUNDRED ACRE SITE JUST SOUTHWEST OF BEIJING.

THOSE INTEL OFFICERS BELIEVE THIS COMPLEX COULD BE A “DOOMSDAY” BUNKER FOR THE PEOPLE’S LIBERATION ARMY’S TOP BRASS IN CASE OF NUCLEAR WAR.

WHEN FINISHED, THE COMMAND CENTER, DUBBED “BEIJING MILITARY CITY” MAKES THE CURRENT WORLD’S LARGEST MILITARY COMMAND CENTER, THE PENTAGON, LOOK TINY IN COMPARISON.

INTELLIGENCE EXPERTS ALSO NOTE, THE IMAGES OF THE CONSTRUCTION SITE TAKEN IN MID-2024, ARE FITTING FOR BEIJING AS THE P-L-A PREPARES FOR ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2027.

IT ALSO COMES AS CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING REPEATEDLY VOWS TO REUNIFY WITH TAIWAN IN 2027 USING FORCE IF NECESSARY.THE SELF-GOVERNING ISLAND HAS DEFENSEIVE AGREEMENTS IN PLACE WITH THE UNITED STATES, AND THE U-S IS DEPENDENT ON TAIWAN FOR MOST OF THE MICROCHIPS WHICH MAKE ELECTRONICS WORK.

BUT BACK TO THE COMPLEX–A FORMER C-I-A ANALYST SUSPECTS CHINA’S NEW FACILITY IS MEANT TO ENHANCE BEIJING’S “NUCLEAR WAR-FIGHTING CAPABILITY.”

AROUND 100 CRANES WERE OBSERVED OPERATING AT THE THREE-MILE SITE, CONSTRUCTING UNDERGROUND FACILITIES CONNECTED BY  TUNNELS.

THE FINANCIAL TIMES REPORTED THERE IS NO MILITARY PRESENCE CURRENTLY AT THE SITE, BUT IT HAS ALL THE HALLMARKS OF A SENSITIVE MILITARY SITE. POPULAR HIKING TRAILS NEAR THE INSTALLATION ARE CLOSED AND ACCESS TO THE GROUNDS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

THERE ARE ALSO SIGNS WARNING AGAINST FLYING DRONES OR TAKING PICTURES AND THE BACK OF THE PROJECT IS BLOCKED OFF BY A CHECKPOINT.

AS WE’VE REPORTED ON BEFORE, BEIJING IS BEEFING UP ITS NUCLEAR ARSENAL AND THE PENTAGON ESTIMATES CHINA WILL HAVE 15-HUNDRED NUCLEAR WEAPONS BY 2035.

BEIJING ALSO APPEARS TO BE BUILDING A MASSIVE NUCLEAR FUSION CENTER IN THE SOUTHWEST CITY OF MIANYANG, WHICH COULD ALLOW FOR NEW NUCLEAR WEAPONS DESIGNS AND THE HOUSING OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

But less than two years after opening, the luxury experience has permanently closed its doors in Orlando, Florida.

According to The Wrap, the former hotel will be transformed into a Walt Disney Imagineering office. The division is responsible for designing Disney’s creative projects, from theme parks to cruise ships.

A high-cost experience that didn’t last

The Galactic Starcruiser was marketed as a two-night, all-inclusive experience that allowed guests to live their own Star Wars adventure. It came with a hefty price tag — $4,800 for two guests and $6,000 for a family of four.

Disney designed the experience as an interactive role-playing journey, where guests could train with lightsabers, interact with Star Wars characters, and follow a structured itinerary of missions and activities.

Jenny Nicholson’s viral critique sparks debate

Not everyone was impressed.

YouTuber Jenny Nicholson, known for her deep dives into immersive entertainment, shared her experience in a four-hour video last year titled “The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel.”

Nicholson’s review, which has nearly 12 million views as of Friday, Jan. 31, breaks down why she felt the experience wasn’t worth the cost. She highlighted small cabins, rigid scheduling and lackluster mini-games — some of which she called “boring.”

The video went viral, amassing 3 million views in just a few days and trending across social media. Many believe the widespread criticism contributed to Disney’s decision to close the hotel early.

Nicholson’s video sparked widespread discussions online, with some guests agreeing with her assessment. However, some die-hard Star Wars fans praised the experience.

Nicholson’s video was so impactful that Disney attempted to file a copyright claim against it, citing the use of background music from their marketing clips.

Nicholson later addressed the situation on X, stating that Disney’s claim was unsuccessful.

For now, instead of offering a Star Wars escape for guests, the former luxury hotel will house the creative team behind Disney’s next big attractions.

[KENNEDY FELTON]

IT WAS ONE OF DISNEY’S MOST AMBITIOUS AND IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES – PART HOTEL, PART LIVE-ACTION ROLEPLAY, ALL SET IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY.

But less than two years after opening, the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser permanently closed its doors in Orlando, Florida. Now, the multi-million dollar space is getting a second life, but not in the way fans might expect.

THE WRAP REPORTS THE HOTEL WILL BE TRANSFORMED INTO A WALT DISNEY IMAGINEERING OFFICE… THE BRANCH OF THE COMPANY RESPONSIBLE FOR DESIGNING THE CREATIVE ASPECTS OF DISNEY FROM THEME PARKS TO CRUISE SHIPS.

The former luxury spacecruiser hotel was once a two-night all-inclusive experience that came with a hefty price tag – $4,800 for two guests and $6,000 for a family of four.

DISNEY ORIGINALLY MARKETED THE HOTEL AS A FULLY IMMERSIVE STAR WARS ADVENTURE WHERE GUESTS COULD LIVE OUT THEIR OWN STORYLINE… INTERACT WITH CHARACTERS… AND EVEN ATTEND LIGHTSABER TRAINING.

“You’re provided with a trip itinerary which blocks out pretty much everything, almost down to the minute. You’re better off thinking of it as a summer camp. Space camp, if you like.” – JENNY NICHOLSON, YOUTUBER

Jenny Nicholson is an immersive entertainment YouTuber who shared her experience at the hotel in a four-hour video last year titled ‘The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel.’ The video—with nearly 12 million views as of Friday—breaks down why it wasn’t worth it. She shows herself walking through the hotel, attending themed dinner shows, and playing mini-games she described as boring. Her video went viral, amassing three million views within just a few days—a reaction many believe contributed to the hotel’s premature closing.

It sparked widespread discussions across various platforms in response to Nicholson’s video. Some users even shared personal experiences echoing her sentiments.

“Based on our experience I do not think the star cruiser is worth the money at this time. I know that it just opened but I really thought that Disney would have some of these kinks worked out.” – AmberHeartsDisney, Reddit user

And while other die-hard fans of the franchise praised the detailed storytelling, saying – “The service throughout was at a level even beyond Disney’s normally high standards and the actors were incredible.” – silver_moon21, Reddit user

The impact of Nicholson’s video led to Disney filing a copyright claim against it, citing the use of background music from their marketing clips.

Nicholson addressed the situation on X shortly after, saying Disney tried and failed to copyright claim her video.

So for now—instead of a Star Wars escape for guests, the space will serve as an office for the team behind Disney’s biggest—and maybe even their next—attractions.
