What prevented emergency crews from saving the driver?

Officers attempted to rescue the driver, who was trapped inside, but the intensity of the flames and heat prevented them from reaching the person.

Firefighters responded, but efforts to extinguish the fire were complicated by the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery, which caused flames to shoot up 5 to 10 feet into the air. The driver, who was the sole occupant, was later pronounced dead at the scene.

How dangerous are lithium-ion battery fires?

This incident marks the latest example of the safety challenges emergency crews can face when responding to electric vehicle crashes.

A 2020 report from the National Transportation Safety Board states that lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles can present hazards such as reignition and electric shock, while first responders try to suppress flames that can burn over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than a gas-powered vehicle fire.

What happens next?

Authorities have not yet identified the victim. The Torrance Police Department is continuing to investigate the crash and has urged anyone with information to come forward.

Killing of Vermont border patrol agent tied to known cult, other murders

A manhunt is underway for an armed and dangerous woman accused in the death of a United States Border Patrol agent in Vermont. Investigators believe the fatal shooting is tied to an alleged radical cult on the West Coast that’s linked to at least three other murders across the country.

The Albany Times Union reported that Zajko purchased two hand guns found at the scene of Maland’s death. The guns were allegedly used by the accused killer, Teresa Youngblut.

Youngblut’s passenger, Felix Bauckholt, a German citizen, who was also armed, was fatally shot by agents at the scene after Youngblut reportedly opened fire, killing Maland.

Youngblut was taken into custody and remains behind bars in Vermont.

What other cases is Zajko wanted in by police?

Meanwhile, as the search for Zajko continues, the Times Union said she is also wanted for the shooting deaths of her parents inside their Pennsylvania home in January 2023.

Zajko is also a “person of interest” in another murder of a California landlord earlier this year.

Police were able to make an arrest in the case, finding the suspect had a close relationship with Yungbluth.

According to court records, the pair was in “frequent contact with each other” prior to the killings on opposite sides of the country, just three days apart.

How are the people involved connected to a cult?

The alleged cult comes in as investigators connect the dots between all of the individuals allegedly involved in the killings.

Authorities believe the suspects are all part of an extremist group in the San Francisco area run by a transgender woman, legally named Jack Lasota, who goes by the name “Ziz.”

According to court records, Ziz takes on a violent philosophy based on veganism, artificial intelligence and transgenderism.

What is rationalism?

In a Friday, Jan. 31 episode of the “TrueAnon” podcast titled “Evil Gods Must Be Fought: the Zizian Murder Cult,” the hosts discuss the group, which contains members who call themselves “Zizians” and follow the theory of rationalism.

“They all basically kind of meet under this big world view, which is basically the belief that nothing like no fear of political correctness or uncontrollable or unwanted emotion should get in the way of a human’s ability to see the world as it is,” host Liz Franczak said.

The Associated Press reported Ziz is currently facing charges of obstructing law enforcement and disorderly conduct in Pennsylvania.

Authorities haven’t said whether those charges are related to the murder of Zajko’s parents, but court records show police were searching for a gun used in the killings when they arrested Ziz 12 days later at a hotel about 10 miles from the scene of the killings.

Ziz also previously lived at the property in California belonging to Curtis Lind, the landlord who was killed.

His death on Jan. 17 came two years after he survived a samurai sword attack allegedly carried out by two known Zizians who lived in box trucks on his property.

Ziz was not named in that case.

How are the victims’ families responding?

Lind’s family posted a message on GoFundMe about his death.

“His murder was a senseless act,” Lind’s GoFundMe page stated. “He was a senior citizen trying to live his life to the best of his abilities despite how much he was going through physically and mentally after being attacked 2 years ago.”

What happens next?

The suspect in the Lind case, Maximilian Snyder, is scheduled to make a court appearance on Feb. 6.

The family of Maland, the border agent who was killed, said he was “a devoted agent who served with honor and bravery. He had a tremendous respect and pride for the work he did; he truly embodied service over self.”

Youngblut, who’s charged in that murder, is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 7.

As for the current manhunt for Zajko, police believe she is driving a green 2013 Subaru Outback with an expired Vermont registration.

“they’re all basically kind of meeting under this big world view … which is basically is the belief that nothing like no fear of political correctness or uncontrollable or unwanted emotion should get in the way of a human’s ability to see the world as it is”

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS … “ZIZ” IS CURRENTLY FACING CHARGES OF OBSTRUCTING LAW ENFORCEMENT AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT IN PENNSYLVANIA.

AUTHORITIES HAVEN’T SAID WHETHER THOSE CHARGES ARE RELATED TO THE MURDER OF ZAJKO’S PARENTS, BUT COURT RECORDS SHOW POLICE WERE SEARCHING FOR A GUN USED IN THE KILLINGS WHEN THEY ARRESTED “ZIZ” 12 DAYS LATER AT A HOTEL ABOUT 10 MILES FROM THE SCENE OF THE KILLINGS.

“ZIZ” ALSO PREVIOUSLY LIVED AT THE PROPERTY IN CALIFORNIA BELONGING TO CURTIS LIND– THE LANDLORD WHO WAS KILLED.

HIS JANUARY 17TH DEATH CAME TWO YEARS AFTER HE SURVIVED A SAMURAI SWORD ATTACK ALLEGEDLY BY TWO KNOWN “ZIZIANS”  WHO LIVED IN BOX TRUCKS ON HIS PROPERTY.

“ZIZ” WAS NOT NAMED IN THIS CASE.

LIND’S FAMILY POSTED ON GO FUND ME … SAYING QUOTE ..

“HIS MURDER WAS A SENSELESS ACT. HE WAS A SENIOR CITIZEN TRYING TO LIVE HIS LIFE TO THE BEST OF HIS ABILITIES DESPITE HOW MUCH HE WAS GOING THROUGH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY AFTER BEING ATTACKED 2 YEARS AGO.”

WE MAY LEARN MORE DETAILS WHEN THE SUSPECT IN THE CASE MAKES A COURT APPEARANCE IN FEBRUARY.

THE FAMILY OF MALAND … THE BORDER AGENT WHO WAS KILLED SAYS HE WAS A DEVOTED AGENT WHO SERVED WITH HONOR AND BRAVERY. HE HAD A TREMENDOUS RESPECT AND PRIDE FOR THE WORK HE DID; HE TRULY EMBODIED SERVICE OVER SELF.”

YOUNGBLUT – WHO’S CHARGED IN THAT MURDER IS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR IN COURT FEBRUARY SEVENTH.

AS FOR THE CURRENT MANHUNT FOR ZAJKO … POLICE BELIEVE SHE IS DRIVING A GREEN 20-13 SUBARU OUTBACK WITH AN EXPIRED VERMONT REGISTRATION.

12,000 North Koreans went to fight for Russia, now they’re nowhere to be found

The Armed Forces of Ukraine said on Friday, Jan. 31, soldiers have not seen North Korean troops on the front lines in Russia’s Kursk region in several weeks. A spokesperson for Ukraine’s military special forces told CNN he believes it is because of all the mass casualties Pyongyang’s soldiers have suffered.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced last week in Davos, Switzerland, that despite Russia’s 60,000 troops and 12,000 North Koreans in Kursk, Ukrainian forces remain in the region, fighting to hold onto Russian land in the hopes of having a better bargaining chip should peace talks start.

Who’s winning in Kursk?

The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington D.C.-based think tank, also reports that Kyiv recently made some advancements in Kursk. While Russia’s Defense Ministry said Moscow’s forces recaptured a Kursk village on the border of Russia and Ukraine.

What have North Korean troops been doing?

Ukrainian military officials said they believe Pyongyang sent highly trained soldiers. However, Moscow has really only used them to carry out ground assaults and human-wave attacks, making them easy targets for Ukrainian fighters and drone pilots.

What’s the recent history between Russia and North Korea?

So far, neither Moscow nor Pyongyang has publicly mentioned the presence of North Korean soldiers in Ukraine. Although, as Straight Arrow News reported, months before Pyongyang soldiers went to fight in Russia’s war, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a key defense agreement, promising to aid each other in case of attack.

In addition to the troops, Pyongyang has also supplied Moscow with millions of artillery shells, rockets and missiles, according to Western intelligence.

Massive Calif. solar plant may close years early, saving residents money

Listen

What was once the world’s largest solar plant of its kind may soon shut down more than a decade earlier than planned. This potential closure comes as the facility has struggled to compete with newer, cheaper solar technologies and faced accusations of causing thousands of wildlife deaths.

Why is this solar plant closing so much earlier than expected?

Opened in 2014, the $2.2 billion Ivanpah Solar Power Plant spans five square miles in the Mojave Desert near the California-Nevada border. The facility operates using concentrated solar power technology, which utilizes thousands of mirrors to focus sunlight onto towers to generate steam-powered electricity.

Point phone camera here

However, utility officials said that cutting ties with the plant could lead to lower energy prices for consumers, as industry advancements in photovoltaic solar panels and battery storage have made other renewable energy sources more cost-effective.

As a result, California’s two largest power providers, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and Southern California Edison, indicated they want to end their contracts with the plant. Southern California Edison is reportedly in discussions for a potential contract buyout, while PG&E has already reached an agreement with Ivanpah’s owners to terminate its contract.

If PG&E’s exit deal is approved by regulators, this would result in two of the plant’s three units shutting down by 2026, 13 years ahead of schedule.

What environmental concerns have been attributed to the solar plant?

The facility has also faced criticism from conservationists, who argue it has harmed local wildlife. Environmental groups claim the plant’s intense solar reflections have caused numerous bird deaths, with around 6,000 being incinerated mid-air every year. Additionally, concerns have been raised about its impact on the habitat of the threatened desert tortoise.

“Along with killing thousands of birds and tortoises, the project’s construction destroyed irreplaceable pristine desert habitat along with numerous rare plant species,” Julia Dowell, a senior campaign organizer at the Sierra Club, an environmental organization, said. “The Ivanpah plant was a financial boondoggle and environmental disaster.”

What happens next?

If the agreements to end its power contracts are finalized, one of Ivanpah’s owners, NRG Energy, has suggested the site may be repurposed for solar panels, but details on the decommissioning process and associated costs have not yet been disclosed.

[Jack Aylmer]

WHAT WAS ONCE THE WORLD’S LARGEST SOLAR POWER PLANT OF ITS KIND MAY SOON CLOSE-

MORE THAN A DECADE BEFORE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO.

UTILITY OFFICIALS SAY CUTTING TIES WITH THE PLANT WILL ACTUALLY RESULT IN CHEAPER ENERGY PRICES FOR CONSUMERS-

AS THE FACILITY HAS ALSO FACED ALLEGATIONS OF BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR THOUSANDS OF WILDLIFE DEATHS.

OPENED IN 2014, THE IVANPAH SOLAR POWER PLANT IS LOCATED ACROSS FIVE SQUARE MILES IN THE MOJAVE DESERT NEAR THE CALIFORNIA-NEVADA BORDER.

THE 2.2 BILLION DOLLAR FACILITY HAS STRUGGLED TO COMPETE WITH NEWER, CHEAPER SOLAR TECHNOLOGIES.

THE IVANPAH PLANT OPERATES USING CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER TECHNOLOGY-

IN WHICH THOUSANDS OF MIRRORS FOCUS SUNLIGHT ONTO TOWERS TO GENERATE STEAM-POWERED ELECTRICITY.

BUT INDUSTRY ADVANCEMENTS IN SOLAR PANELS AND BATTERY STORAGE HAVE MADE OTHER RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES MORE COST-EFFECTIVE.

AS A RESULT, CALIFORNIA’S TWO LARGEST POWER PROVIDERS HAVE INDICATED THEY WANT TO TERMINATE THEIR CONTRACTS WITH THE PLANT.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON IS IN TALKS FOR A POTENTIAL BUYOUT OF ITS CONTRACT-

WHILE PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC HAS ALREADY ANNOUNCED AN AGREEMENT WITH THE FACILITY’S OWNERS TO END ITS CONTRACTS.

IF THE CONTRACT TERMINATION WITH PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC IS APPROVED BY REGULATORS-

TWO OF THE PLANT’S THREE UNITS WOULD SHUT DOWN IN 2026-

13 YEARS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.

MEANWHILE, CONSERVATIONISTS HAVE WELCOMED NEWS OF THE IVANPAH PLANT’S POTENTIAL CLOSURE-

CALLING IT AN ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER.

THEY SAY THE FACILITY HAS CAUSED NUMEROUS BIRD DEATHS FROM ITS INTENSE SOLAR REFLECTIONS-

INCINERATING ABOUT 6,000 MID-AIR EVERY YEAR.

AND HAVE ALSO BLAMED THE PLANT FOR DESTROYING HABITATS OF THE THREATENED DESERT TORTOISE.

IF THE AGREEMENTS TO END POWER CONTRACTS WITH IVANPAH ARE FINALIZED-

ITS OWNERS HAVE INDICATED THE SITE MAY BE REPURPOSED FOR SOLAR PANELS IN THE FUTURE-

THOUGH DETAILS ON THE DECOMMISSIONING PROCESS OR FUTURE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE TRANSITION HAVE YET TO BE PROVIDED.

China building military base 10x larger than the Pentagon: Report

China is building the world’s largest military command center that is at least 10 times bigger than the U.S. Pentagon. The Financial Times released a report about the base, citing information from U.S. officials, on Thursday, Jan. 30.

How did U.S. officials find out about the base?

Satellite images obtained by the news outlet show about a 1,500-acre site just southwest of Beijing. Intelligence officers believe this complex could be a so-called “doomsday” bunker for the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) to congregate in case of a nuclear war.

When finished, the command center, dubbed “Beijing Military City” makes the current world’s largest military command center, the Pentagon, look relatively small in comparison.

Intelligence experts also noted the images of the construction site, taken in mid-2024, are fitting for Beijing as the PLA prepares for its 100th anniversary in 2027.

What does it have to do with Taiwan?

It also comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping has repeatedly vowed to reunify with Taiwan in 2027, using force if necessary. The self-governing island has defense agreements in place with the United States, and the U.S. is dependent on Taiwan for most of the microchips which make electronics work.

What do we know about the facility so far?

A former CIA analyst told the Financial Times they suspect China’s new facility is meant to enhance Beijing’s “nuclear war-fighting capability.”

Around 100 cranes were observed operating at the three-mile site, constructing underground facilities connected by tunnels.

The Financial Times reported that there is no military presence currently at the site, but it has “all the hallmarks of a sensitive military site.” Popular hiking trails near the installation are closed and access to the grounds is strictly prohibited.

There are also signs warning against flying drones or taking pictures and the back of the project is blocked off by a checkpoint.

What did we know about China’s military expansion plans?

As Straight Arrow News previously reported, Beijing is beefing up its nuclear arsenal and the Pentagon estimates China will have 1,500 nuclear weapons by 2035.

Beijing also appears to be building a massive nuclear fusion center in the southwest city of Mianyang, which could allow for new nuclear weapons designs and the housing of nuclear weapons.

[CRAIG NIGRELLI]

CHINA IS BUILDING THE WORLD’S LARGEST MILITARY COMMAND CENTER.

AT LEAST TEN TIMES BIGGER THAN THE PENTAGON.

THAT’S WHAT U-S INTELLIGENCE OFFICERS TOLD THE FINANCIAL TIMES.

SATELLITE IMAGES OBTAINED BY THE NEWS OUTLET SHOW ABOUT A 15-HUNDRED ACRE SITE JUST SOUTHWEST OF BEIJING.

THOSE INTEL OFFICERS BELIEVE THIS COMPLEX COULD BE A “DOOMSDAY” BUNKER FOR THE PEOPLE’S LIBERATION ARMY’S TOP BRASS IN CASE OF NUCLEAR WAR.

WHEN FINISHED, THE COMMAND CENTER, DUBBED “BEIJING MILITARY CITY” MAKES THE CURRENT WORLD’S LARGEST MILITARY COMMAND CENTER, THE PENTAGON, LOOK TINY IN COMPARISON.

INTELLIGENCE EXPERTS ALSO NOTE, THE IMAGES OF THE CONSTRUCTION SITE TAKEN IN MID-2024, ARE FITTING FOR BEIJING AS THE P-L-A PREPARES FOR ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2027.

IT ALSO COMES AS CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING REPEATEDLY VOWS TO REUNIFY WITH TAIWAN IN 2027 USING FORCE IF NECESSARY.THE SELF-GOVERNING ISLAND HAS DEFENSEIVE AGREEMENTS IN PLACE WITH THE UNITED STATES, AND THE U-S IS DEPENDENT ON TAIWAN FOR MOST OF THE MICROCHIPS WHICH MAKE ELECTRONICS WORK.

BUT BACK TO THE COMPLEX–A FORMER C-I-A ANALYST SUSPECTS CHINA’S NEW FACILITY IS MEANT TO ENHANCE BEIJING’S “NUCLEAR WAR-FIGHTING CAPABILITY.”

AROUND 100 CRANES WERE OBSERVED OPERATING AT THE THREE-MILE SITE, CONSTRUCTING UNDERGROUND FACILITIES CONNECTED BY  TUNNELS.

THE FINANCIAL TIMES REPORTED THERE IS NO MILITARY PRESENCE CURRENTLY AT THE SITE, BUT IT HAS ALL THE HALLMARKS OF A SENSITIVE MILITARY SITE. POPULAR HIKING TRAILS NEAR THE INSTALLATION ARE CLOSED AND ACCESS TO THE GROUNDS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

THERE ARE ALSO SIGNS WARNING AGAINST FLYING DRONES OR TAKING PICTURES AND THE BACK OF THE PROJECT IS BLOCKED OFF BY A CHECKPOINT.

AS WE’VE REPORTED ON BEFORE, BEIJING IS BEEFING UP ITS NUCLEAR ARSENAL AND THE PENTAGON ESTIMATES CHINA WILL HAVE 15-HUNDRED NUCLEAR WEAPONS BY 2035.

BEIJING ALSO APPEARS TO BE BUILDING A MASSIVE NUCLEAR FUSION CENTER IN THE SOUTHWEST CITY OF MIANYANG, WHICH COULD ALLOW FOR NEW NUCLEAR WEAPONS DESIGNS AND THE HOUSING OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

But less than two years after opening, the luxury experience has permanently closed its doors in Orlando, Florida.

According to The Wrap, the former hotel will be transformed into a Walt Disney Imagineering office. The division is responsible for designing Disney’s creative projects, from theme parks to cruise ships.

A high-cost experience that didn’t last

The Galactic Starcruiser was marketed as a two-night, all-inclusive experience that allowed guests to live their own Star Wars adventure. It came with a hefty price tag — $4,800 for two guests and $6,000 for a family of four.

Disney designed the experience as an interactive role-playing journey, where guests could train with lightsabers, interact with Star Wars characters, and follow a structured itinerary of missions and activities.

Jenny Nicholson’s viral critique sparks debate

Not everyone was impressed.

YouTuber Jenny Nicholson, known for her deep dives into immersive entertainment, shared her experience in a four-hour video last year titled “The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel.”

Nicholson’s review, which has nearly 12 million views as of Friday, Jan. 31, breaks down why she felt the experience wasn’t worth the cost. She highlighted small cabins, rigid scheduling and lackluster mini-games — some of which she called “boring.”

The video went viral, amassing 3 million views in just a few days and trending across social media. Many believe the widespread criticism contributed to Disney’s decision to close the hotel early.

Nicholson’s video sparked widespread discussions online, with some guests agreeing with her assessment. However, some die-hard Star Wars fans praised the experience.

Nicholson’s video was so impactful that Disney attempted to file a copyright claim against it, citing the use of background music from their marketing clips.

Nicholson later addressed the situation on X, stating that Disney’s claim was unsuccessful.

For now, instead of offering a Star Wars escape for guests, the former luxury hotel will house the creative team behind Disney’s next big attractions.

IT WAS ONE OF DISNEY’S MOST AMBITIOUS AND IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES – PART HOTEL, PART LIVE-ACTION ROLEPLAY, ALL SET IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY.

But less than two years after opening, the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser permanently closed its doors in Orlando, Florida. Now, the multi-million dollar space is getting a second life, but not in the way fans might expect.

THE WRAP REPORTS THE HOTEL WILL BE TRANSFORMED INTO A WALT DISNEY IMAGINEERING OFFICE… THE BRANCH OF THE COMPANY RESPONSIBLE FOR DESIGNING THE CREATIVE ASPECTS OF DISNEY FROM THEME PARKS TO CRUISE SHIPS.

The former luxury spacecruiser hotel was once a two-night all-inclusive experience that came with a hefty price tag – $4,800 for two guests and $6,000 for a family of four.

DISNEY ORIGINALLY MARKETED THE HOTEL AS A FULLY IMMERSIVE STAR WARS ADVENTURE WHERE GUESTS COULD LIVE OUT THEIR OWN STORYLINE… INTERACT WITH CHARACTERS… AND EVEN ATTEND LIGHTSABER TRAINING.

“You’re provided with a trip itinerary which blocks out pretty much everything, almost down to the minute. You’re better off thinking of it as a summer camp. Space camp, if you like.” – JENNY NICHOLSON, YOUTUBER

Jenny Nicholson is an immersive entertainment YouTuber who shared her experience at the hotel in a four-hour video last year titled ‘The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel.’ The video—with nearly 12 million views as of Friday—breaks down why it wasn’t worth it. She shows herself walking through the hotel, attending themed dinner shows, and playing mini-games she described as boring. Her video went viral, amassing three million views within just a few days—a reaction many believe contributed to the hotel’s premature closing.

It sparked widespread discussions across various platforms in response to Nicholson’s video. Some users even shared personal experiences echoing her sentiments.

“Based on our experience I do not think the star cruiser is worth the money at this time. I know that it just opened but I really thought that Disney would have some of these kinks worked out.” – AmberHeartsDisney, Reddit user

And while other die-hard fans of the franchise praised the detailed storytelling, saying – “The service throughout was at a level even beyond Disney’s normally high standards and the actors were incredible.” – silver_moon21, Reddit user

The impact of Nicholson’s video led to Disney filing a copyright claim against it, citing the use of background music from their marketing clips.

Nicholson addressed the situation on X shortly after, saying Disney tried and failed to copyright claim her video.

So for now—instead of a Star Wars escape for guests, the space will serve as an office for the team behind Disney’s biggest—and maybe even their next—attractions.

Trump stated during his inaugural address that it would be the official policy of the federal government that there are only two genders: male and female. One of his executive orders instructed government agencies to use the word “sex” instead of “gender.”

According to the email obtained by Klippenstein, government signatures may only contain the following information: name, degree(s), title, organization, contact information, links to surveys and other approved information.

The email laid out specific instructions on how to change a signature and remove unapproved information.

According to ABC News, employees at the Departments of Transportation and Energy received similar instructions. It is unclear if the emails went out to all federal employees, but the president’s orders apply government-wide.

Federal employees have been told to remove their pronouns from email signatures to align with President Trump’s recent executive orders. Workers have until 5 p.m. Friday Jan. 31 to comply, the notice did not say if there are consequences for inaction, it just thanked employees in advance for their “immediate attention”.

Independent Journalist Ken Klippenstein shared an email that was sent to CDC employees which said both the CDC and HHS are implementing two executive orders that President Trump signed both of them on his first day in office.

Nearly 100 US Special Forces vets hired to operate key checkpoints in Gaza

A U.S.-based security firm has hired nearly 100 former U.S. Special Forces personnel to help operate a key checkpoint in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas ceasefire. The North Carolina-based UG Solutions, founded in 2023, is leading the effort, offering a daily rate of at least $1,100 with an upfront $10,000 advance for hired personnel, according to a recruitment email verified by company officials.

The contractors will be stationed at a major checkpoint inside Gaza, which serves as a critical passage for civilians and aid shipments. A spokesperson for UG Solutions confirmed some recruits are already on-site but did not specify how many.

Role of U.S. contractors in Gaza checkpoint operations

The U.S. contractors’ primary mission is vehicle inspection and checkpoint security, ensuring compliance with ceasefire terms. They will not interact directly with civilians, according to a Palestinian official familiar with the agreement.

Instead, their role is focused on monitoring traffic along the Netzarim Corridor, a critical road dividing northern and southern Gaza, as well as Salah al-Din Street, the enclave’s main north-south route.

The security personnel will be armed with M4 rifles and Glock pistols, weapons commonly used by U.S. and Israeli forces. While rules of engagement have been established, UG Solutions has not publicly disclosed them.

Ceasefire deal involves private and regional security forces

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel confirmed that Israel insisted on including a private security firm in the ceasefire agreement. The checkpoint operation will also involve Egyptian security forces, who have reportedly been training for months in counterterrorism operations.

The United States government was not directly involved in selecting UG Solutions or awarding the contract, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. Instead, funding for the security operation comes from Israel and undisclosed Arab nations that played a role in brokering the ceasefire.

Concerns over security and risks to American contractors

The deployment of U.S. private contractors in Gaza is unprecedented and raises security concerns. Hamas remains a powerful force in the region, and experts warn that American personnel could become targets for militants or individuals angered by U.S. support for Israel.

Former Israeli intelligence officer Avi Melamed acknowledged the risks, saying, “Of course there is a threat they will face.”

Other analysts suggest that Hamas may tolerate the contractors’ presence because their role in reopening crossings reinforces Hamas’ claims of victory in the ceasefire negotiations.

U.S. history with private military contractors

The use of private U.S. security contractors in conflict zones has been controversial. The most infamous case occurred in 2007, when Blackwater personnel killed 14 civilians in Baghdad’s Nisour Square, sparking international outrage. Four contractors were convicted in the U.S. but later pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2020.

In another case, four Blackwater operatives were killed by insurgents in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004, leading to a large-scale U.S. military response. Critics argue that deploying armed contractors in volatile regions can escalate conflicts.

Future of private security in Gaza

The current ceasefire, mediated by Egypt and Qatar with U.S. support, is set to last 60 days. During this time, tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians are expected to return to northern Gaza, traveling through the checkpoint operated by UG Solutions and regional security forces.

It remains unclear whether UG Solutions’ contract will be extended beyond the ceasefire period. For now, U.S. officials and international observers are closely monitoring the security situation, particularly regarding how American contractors navigate the risks of operating in Gaza.

A U.S. SECURITY FIRM IS SENDING ALMOST 100 AMERICAN SPECIAL FORCES VETERANS TO HELP RUN A CHECKPOINT IN GAZA. IT’S PART OF THE CEASEFIRE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND HAMAS. THE COMPANY, UG SOLUTIONS, IS OFFERING VETERANS A DAILY PAY RATE STARTING AT $1,100, PLUS A $10,000 ADVANCE.

THE NORTH CAROLINA-BASED FIRM SAYS THE CONTRACTORS WILL INSPECT VEHICLES AND MANAGE CHECKPOINT OPERATIONS. SOME ARE ALREADY IN COUNTRY, BUT THE COMPANY ISN’T SAYING HOW MANY.

THIS CHECKPOINT WAS A STICKING POINT IN NEGOTIATIONS. ISRAEL INITIALLY WANTED TO STAFF IT WITH ITS OWN TROOPS, BUT LATER AGREED TO ALLOW PRIVATE SECURITY CONTRACTORS TO HELP KEEP AID MOVING. EGYPTIAN FORCES ARE ALSO ON-SITE, USING SCANNERS TO CHECK FOR WEAPONS.

HAVING AMERICAN CONTRACTORS IN GAZA IS A FIRST, AND IT COMES WITH RISKS. HAMAS IS STILL ACTIVE IN THE AREA, AND YOU DON’T NEED TO BE A SECURITY EXPERT TO KNOW THERE WILL LIKELY BE CLASHES WITH MILITANTS OR CIVILIANS UPSET OVER U.S. SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL.
THE CONTRACTORS WILL BE ARMED WITH M4 RIFLES AND GLOCK PISTOLS, BUT THE EXACT RULES FOR ENGAGEMENT AREN’T EXACTLY CLEAR AT THIS TIME. .

SO FAR, THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ISN’T COMMENTING ON THE ARRANGEMENT. A SOURCE FAMILIAR WITH THE DEAL SAYS THE FUNDING COMES FROM ISRAEL AND UNNAMED ARAB NATIONS—NOT WASHINGTON. MANY ARAB NATIONS SUPPORT ISRAEL’S FIGHT AGAINST HAMAS AND OTHER IRANIAN-BACKED PROXIES, BUT DON’T ANNOUNCE THE SUPPORT PUBLICLY FOR FEAR OF RETALIATION.

THE THOUGHT OF USING PRIVATE CONTRACTORS IS A LITTLE WORRISOME TO CRITICS OF THE DEAL. PRIVATE SECURITY FIRMS DID PLAY CONTROVERSIAL ROLES IN PAST CONFLICTS. LIKE IN 2007, WHEN BLACKWATER CONTRACTORS KILLED 14 CIVILIANS IN IRAQ, SPARKING OUTRAGE AND LEGAL ACTION. ANALYSTS SAY DEPLOYING AMERICAN SECURITY PERSONNEL IN GAZA COULD CREATE SIMILAR RISKS, GIVEN THE FRAGILE SITUATION.

FOR NOW, THOUGH, THE CHECKPOINT REMAINS OPERATIONAL, AND THOUSANDS OF DISPLACED PALESTINIANS CONTINUE MOVING THROUGH IT AS THEY RETURN TO NORTHERN GAZA. THE CEASEFIRE, BROKERED BY EGYPT AND QATAR, BEGAN ON JANUARY 19th AS PART OF A 60-DAY INITIAL PHASE.

Where is the asteroid now?

Scientists in Chile first spotted the asteroid by telescope in December 2024. They’ve named it 2024 YR4.

The space rock is anywhere from 130 to 330 feet across, scientists estimated.

Researchers said the asteroid is currently headed away from Earth, but said it came within 500,000 miles of Earth on Christmas Day. That’s about twice the distance of the moon.

What are the chances of the asteroid hitting Earth?

NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies director, Paul Chodas, said there is a 99% chance that the asteroid will miss Earth.

However, he said the small 1 % chance that it might hit our planet deserves attention.

Chodas explained that as it makes a path around the sun, its risk of hitting Earth might drop.

Experts said the space rock will gradually fade from view over the next few months and even the most powerful of telescopes will not be able to pinpoint it.

Once out of sight, it will not become visible again until 2028.

In the meantime, scientists are looking over data and surveys of space dating back to 2016 to track its history.

The European Space Agency reported that the Earth gets hit by an asteroid of this size every few thousand years.

This particular asteroid is now atop the agency’s risk list.

What kind of damage could this asteroid cause?

NASA said that if the asteroid turns out to be on the large end of its estimated range, it could produce a blast of about 30 miles, including the impact site.

The damage could range from massive explosions to fires, or perhaps an earthquake or tsunamis, according to the University of California at Berkeley.

If the asteroid does make its way toward Earth, experts dated the impact at around Dec. 22, 2032. The exact location of where it could hit is unknown.

AS THE SPACE WARS AMONG BILLIONAIRES CONTINUE TO RECEIVE
ALL SORTS OF COVERAGE, A RECENT DISCOVERY IS GETTING THE ATTENTION OF SCIENTISTS AND ASTRONOMERS. NASA SAYS A NEWLY DISCOVERED ASTEROID HAS A VERY SMALL CHANCE OF HITTING THE EARTH IN THE YEAR 2032.
SCIENTISTS FIRST SPOTTED IT LAST MONTH, BY TELESCOPE, IN THE COUNTRY OF CHILE. THEY’VE NAMED IT 2024 YR4. THE SPACE ROCK IS BELIEVED TO BE ANYWHERE FROM 130 TO 330 FEET ACROSS. IT IS CURRENTLY HEADING AWAY FROM EARTH. THEY SAY IT CAME WITHIN 500,000 MILES OF EARTH ON CHRISTMAS DAY, WHICH IS ABOUT TWICE THE DISTANCE OF THE MOON, WHICH IS ABOUT 239,000 MILES AWAY.
THE DIRECTOR OF NASA’S CENTER FOR NEAR EARTH OBJECT STUDIES, PAUL CHODAS, SAYS THERE IS A 99 % CHANCE IT WILL MISS THE EARTH BUT THE SMALL
ONE PERCENT CHANCE THAT IT MIGHT, DESERVES ATTENTION.
HE SAYS AS THE ASTEROID MAKES A PATH AROUND THE SUN, ITS RISK OF HITTING EARTH MIGHT ACTUALLY DROP.
ADDING TO THE INTRIGUE, EXPERTS SAY THE ASTEROID WILL GRADUALLY FADE FROM VIEW OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS AND EVEN THE MOST POWERFUL OF TELESCOPES WILL **NOT** BE ABLE TO PINPOINT IT. ONCE OUT OF SIGHT, IT WILL NOT BECOME VISIBLE AGAIN, UNTIL 2028.
IN THE MEANTIME, SCIENTISTS ARE NOW LOOKING OVER DATA AND SURVEYS OF SPACE, DATING BACK TO 2016, TO TRACK THE ASTEROID’S HISTORY. THE EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY REPORTS THAT THE EARTH GETS HIT BY AN ASTEROID, THIS SIZE EVERY FEW THOUSAND YEARS. THIS PARTICULAR ASTEROID IS NOW ATOP THE AGENCY’S RISK LIST.
NASA’S CHODAS SAYS IF THE ASTEROID TURNS OUT TO BE ON THE LARGE END OF ITS ESTIMATED RANGE IT COULD PRODUCE A BLAST OF ABOUT 30 MILES, INCLUDING THE IMPACT SITE. THE DAMAGE COULD RANGE FROM MASSIVE EXPLOSIONS, TO FIRES OR PERHAPS EVEN AN EARTHQUAKE OR TSUNAMIS, ACCORDING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY.
IF IT DOES COME DOWN, THEY HAVE PEGGED THE DATE AT AROUND DECEMBER 22ND, 2032, BUT THE EXACT LOCATION IS UNKNOWN. FOR MORE UNBIASED UPDATES, DOWNLOAD THE STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS APP

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have launched Black Hawk helicopter patrols to enhance security along the U.S.-Canada border, providing rapid response capabilities for illegal crossings, human trafficking and drug smuggling. The patrols began earlier this week and now cover Alberta, Quebec and Manitoba.

RCMP officials said the helicopters will monitor all illegal border activity, including crossings between ports of entry and criminal networks involved in smuggling.

The increased enforcement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump pressures Canada to tighten border security, even threatening tariffs on Canadian exports. In response, Ottawa committed $1.3 billion to border security, investing in surveillance drones and new monitoring technology.

Black Hawk helicopters are being deployed to remote border areas

RCMP officials said the helicopters will allow teams to respond more quickly, particularly in remote areas where extreme weather and rugged terrain make border crossings dangerous.

In an interview with Global News, the RCMP’s chief superintendent and director general of serious and organized crime and border integrity said the agency began evaluating border security needs in 2023. While the Canadian government initially considered purchasing new aircraft, the RCMP opted to lease Black Hawks for immediate deployment.

“The range and speed of the Black Hawk allows it to be deployed very quickly to any location along the Alberta border, providing the RCMP with an enhanced rapid-response capability within the province,” RCMP Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland, regional commander for federal policing in the northwest region, said.

Officials say there is no border ‘crisis’

Despite increased enforcement, Canadian authorities maintain there is no migration “crisis” at the U.S.-Canada border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection recorded more than 1.5 million migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border last year, compared to just 23,000 apprehensions at the northern border.

Beyond migration enforcement, the Black Hawks will also target human trafficking and drug smuggling. While U.S. agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the northern border last year, that amount is compared to the 21,000 pounds intercepted at the U.S.-Mexico border. Still, officials said cross-border drug trafficking remains a growing concern.

Broader border security measures coming into place

The helicopter patrols are part of a larger strategy that includes new surveillance towers and joint enforcement efforts with the U.S. The RCMP has also deployed officers to coordinate with Integrated Border Enforcement Teams on the ground to detect and intercept illegal activity.

Residents near the border may see or hear the helicopters regularly, but RCMP officials say these are routine patrol operations and do not pose an immediate public safety threat.

THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE THIS WEEK LAUNCHED BLACK HAWK HELICOPTER PATROLS TO STRENGTHEN SECURITY ALONG THE U.S.-CANADA BORDER. THE MOVE FOLLOWS WEEKS OF U-S PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP THREATENING TO IMPOSE TARIFFS ON CANADA AND MEXICO IF THEY DO NOT STEP UP BORDER ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS TO STYMIE ILLEGAL CROSSINGS, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, AND DRUG SMUGGLING.

IN RESPONSE, OTTAWA HAS INCREASED PATROLS AND RECENTLY COMMITTED ANOTHER $1.3 BILLION TO BORDER SECURITY, INVESTING IN SURVEILLANCE DRONES AND NEW MONITORING TECHNOLOGY.

THE NEWLY ANNOUNCED BLACK HAWK PATROLS WILL MONITOR ALL ILLEGAL BORDER ACTIVITY, INCLUDING CROSSINGS BETWEEN PORTS OF ENTRY AND CRIMINAL NETWORKS INVOLVED IN SMUGGLING.

RCMP BORDER OFFICIALS TOLD GLOBAL NEWS THE AGENCY ACTUALLY BEGAN EVALUATING BORDER SECURITY NEEDS IN 2023.

AND WHILE CANADIAN AUTHORITIES INSIST THERE IS NO MIGRATION “CRISIS” AT THE BORDER — NOTING THERE WERE JUST 23,000 APPREHENSIONS LAST YEAR — THEY DO ACKNOWLEDGE HEIGHTENED CONCERNS FROM BOTH U.S. AND CANADIAN OFFICIALS.

BEYOND MIGRATION ENFORCEMENT, THE BLACK HAWKS WILL ALSO TARGET HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND DRUG SMUGGLING. WHILE U.S. AGENTS SEIZED 43 POUNDS OF FENTANYL AT THE NORTHERN BORDER LAST YEAR, THAT’S A FRACTION OF THE 21-THOUSAND POUNDS INTERCEPTED AT THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDER. STILL, OFFICIALS SAY CROSS-BORDER DRUG TRAFFICKING REMAINS A GROWING CONCERN.

FOR NOW, RESIDENTS NEAR THE BORDER CAN EXPECT TO SEE AND HEAR THE HELICOPTERS REGULARLY. THE RCMP SAYS THESE ARE STANDARD PATROL OPERATIONS AND THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE PUBLIC SAFETY THREAT.
