  • The FBI provided the DOJ with a list of about 4,000 employees involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot investigations, including their roles and office locations. Nine FBI agents filed a lawsuit to protect their identities, fearing retaliation from Trump supporters.
  • The FBI Agents Association also sought legal protection for its members.
  • Trump has criticized the FBI, calling it “corrupt.”

The FBI handed over a list of agents who worked on the Jan. 6 Capitol riot cases to the Department of Justice (DOJ) Tuesday, Feb. 4. Instead of names, the FBI provided employee ID numbers, titles, roles, activities and office locations for roughly 4,000 employees.

Over the years, the DOJ has launched several investigations into Donald Trump. From 2017 to 2019, Special Counsel Robert Mueller looked into whether Trump’s campaign colluded with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election. The Mueller report found Russian interference but no evidence to charge Trump’s campaign with conspiracy or coordination.

Later, federal prosecutors investigated whether Trump’s involvement in hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels and model Karen McDougal violated campaign finance laws. No federal charges were filed against Trump, but his lawyer, Michael Cohen, was convicted for related violations.

After Trump left office in 2021, the FBI began investigating his possession of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. In August 2022, the FBI executed a search warrant and seized numerous documents.

Following the Jan. 6 riot, the DOJ began probing Trump’s role in the events, with ongoing scrutiny over his actions before and during the riot.

Last week, the Trump DOJ ordered the FBI to identify all employees who worked on Jan. 6 cases. In response, nine anonymous FBI agents filed a lawsuit to block their identities from being made public, arguing it could expose them to retaliation from Trump supporters. They fear Trump’s allies might publish the list, putting them and their families in danger.

Trump has criticized the FBI, calling it “corrupt,” and when asked about potential firings, he did not offer specifics.

The FBI Agents Association, representing more than 14,000 current and former agents, also filed a lawsuit Tuesday seeking to protect the agents’ identities.

The DOJ has not commented on the lawsuits.

THE FBI HANDED OVER A LIST OF AGENTS WHO WORKED ON THE JANUARY 6 CAPITOL RIOT CASES TO THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE ON TUESDAY. INSTEAD OF NAMES, THE FBI PROVIDED EMPLOYEE ID NUMBERS, TITLES, ROLES, ACTIVITIES, AND OFFICE LOCATIONS FOR ABOUT 4,000 EMPLOYEES.

OVER THE YEARS, THE DOJ HAS INVESTIGATED DONALD TRUMP IN SEVERAL CASES.

LATER, FEDERAL PROSECUTORS INVESTIGATED WHETHER TRUMP’S INVOLVEMENT IN HUSH MONEY PAYMENTS TO STORMY DANIELS AND KAREN MCDOUGAL VIOLATED CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS. NO *FEDERAL CHARGES WERE FILED AGAINST TRUMP, BUT HIS LAWYER, MICHAEL COHEN, WAS CONVICTED FOR RELATED VIOLATIONS.

AFTER TRUMP LEFT OFFICE IN 2021, THE FBI BEGAN INVESTIGATING HIS POSSESSION OF CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS AT MAR-A-LAGO. IN AUGUST 2022, THE FBI EXECUTED A SEARCH WARRANT, SEIZING NUMEROUS DOCUMENTS.

FOLLOWING THE JANUARY 6 RIOT, THE DOJ BEGAN PROBING TRUMP’S ROLE IN THE EVENTS, WITH ONGOING SCRUTINY OVER HIS ACTIONS BEFORE AND DURING THE RIOT.

LAST WEEK, THE TRUMP DOJ ORDERED THE FBI TO IDENTIFY ALL EMPLOYEES WHO WORKED ON JANUARY 6 CASES. IN RESPONSE, NINE ANONYMOUS FBI AGENTS FILED A LAWSUIT TO BLOCK THEIR IDENTITIES FROM BEING MADE PUBLIC, ARGUING IT COULD EXPOSE THEM TO RETALIATION FROM TRUMP SUPPORTERS. THEY FEAR THE LIST MIGHT BE PUBLISHED BY TRUMP’S ALLIES, PUTTING THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES IN DANGER.

TRUMP HAS CRITICIZED THE FBI, CALLING IT “CORRUPT,” AND WHEN ASKED ABOUT POTENTIAL FIRINGS, HE DID NOT OFFER SPECIFICS.

THE FBI AGENTS ASSOCIATION, REPRESENTING OVER 14,000 CURRENT AND FORMER AGENTS, ALSO FILED A LAWSUIT TUESDAY SEEKING TO PROTECT THE AGENTS’ IDENTITIES.

THE DOJ HAS NOT COMMENTED ON THE LAWSUITS.

Lakers introduce Luka Doncic, Mavericks welcome Anthony Davis

  • The Lakers introduced superstar Luka Doncic Tuesday. Doncic says he was shocked by the weekend trade that sent him from Dallas to Los Angeles.
  • Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka called the trade “a seismic event in NBA history.”
  • The Mavericks, meanwhile, welcomed center Anthony Davis, who could make his debut this weekend.

The Los Angeles Lakers introduced their newest superstar, Luka Doncic, on Tuesday, Feb. 4. Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka opened the press conference by calling the trade that brought Doncic to Los Angeles “a seismic event in NBA history.”

Pelinka and Doncic answered questions about the blockbuster trade for roughly 25 minutes –– shock being the prevailing feeling when Doncic discussed the move. He said he was nearly asleep when he got a call Saturday, Feb. 1, saying he had been traded after six and a half seasons with the Dallas Mavericks.

“Honestly, it was hard at first –– that first day was really hard. I felt like these last 48 hours was one month,” Doncic said. “Emotionally, it was really hard, but today was much better. This is the Lakers. It’s one of the best clubs in history, so I’m excited to be here.”

Doncic thought he would spend his entire career in Dallas and was eligible to sign a five-year, $345 million supermax extension with the franchise next offseason. That deal will not be available with the Lakers, but the Slovenian star will now pair up with LeBron James, a player the 25-year-old has idolized.

“It’s just like a dream comes true, you know. I always look up to him,” Doncic said. “There’s so many things I can learn from him, and I’m just excited, you know, just to learn everything, and now I get to play with him, so it’s an amazing feeling.”

As for the other side of the deal, Anthony Davis got the same type of call Doncic received on Saturday as he was settling in to watch a movie with his wife. Davis also said the trade was a shock, but after working out in Dallas Tuesday, Feb. 4, he’s ready to get to know his new teammates and make a playoff run.

“I think for the most part, just knowing these guys and knowing how hard they play, knowing how great they are defensively, you know, what I can bring to the defensive end and what I can bring to the offensive end as well,” Davis said.

Mavericks fans are not taking the deal nearly as well as Davis. A mock funeral was held in front of the American Airlines Center over the weekend. The team has also had to dispel rampant online rumors that the organization is dismantling the roster to prepare the franchise to move to Las Vegas. The team is owned by Miriam Adelson, whose Las Vegas Sands corporation is based there.

Neither Doncic nor Davis are quite healthy enough to make an on-court debut for their new teams yet. For Davis, who has a mild abdominal strain, that could happen before their weekend matchup in New York. Doncic hasn’t played since Christmas because of a calf strain, but he is close to a return. He will participate in 5-on-5 workout practice Wednesday, Feb. 5, while the Lakers plan for his debut afterward.

Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka opened his press conference Tuesday by calling the trade that brought Luka Doncic to LA “a seismic event in NBA history.”
Not many are going to argue with him at this point.

Pelinka introduced Doncic as the newest Laker Tuesday and the pair answered questions about the mega-trade for about 25 minutes. The prevailing feeling about the move from Doncic was clearly shock. He was nearly asleep when he got the call Saturday that he had been traded after 6 and a half seasons in Dallas.

“Honestly, it was hard at first, that first day was really hard. I felt like these last 48 hours was one month. Emotionally, it was really hard, but today was much better. This is the Lakers. It’s one of the best clubs in history, so I’m excited to be here.”

And for the player on the other side of the deal, Anthony Davis, the call he got Saturday was also a shock but he said after working out in Dallas Tuesday, he’s ready to get to know his new teammates and make a playoff run.

“I think for the most part, just knowing these guys and knowing how hard they play, knowing how great they are defensively, you know what I can bring to the defensive end and, uh, what I can bring to the offensive end as well.”

The team is owned by Miriam Adelson whose Las Vegas Sands corporation is based there.

Conspiracy theories aside, neither Doncic or Davis are healthy enough to make their on-court debut for their new teams quite yet. For AD that should happen by the weekend and the Lakers say it won’t be much longer for Luka either.

Researchers on ‘mad scramble’ to archive data affected by Trump orders

Listen

  • Researchers are working to find and archive government data that’s been removed from the web following Trump’s executive order restricting “gender ideology.” Some of the data was tied to the CDC and U.S. Census Bureau.
  • The CDC reportedly received a list of terms that must be removed from existing or upcoming CDC work, including “gender,” “LGBT,” “pregnant person” or “pregnant people,” and “nonbinary.”
  • The list of unacceptable terms comes as Trump signed an executive order banning government employees or taxpayer dollars from being used to censor or limit the free speech of American citizens.

As agencies work to comply with President Donald Trump’s order restricting “gender ideology” from public federal documents, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has pulled down a lot of its publicly available data. One researcher told the Associated Press it was a “mad scramble” to find and archive government data sets from agencies, including the CDC and the U.S. Census Bureau.

Web pages for data, including the CDC’s tracking of HIV rates and other sexually transmitted diseases, came down last week, as did 35 years of data from its health survey of high-school-aged children. That data showed trends in nutrition, drug and tobacco use, sexual behavior and physical activity levels.

Some sets, including the youth data, have since been restored, albeit without details regarding gender. Many web pages note that the agencies are working to comply with Trump’s order.

However, the data in question has already been funded and created.

Both the Washington Post and the Inside Medicine Substack newsletter by Harvard Medical School instructor Dr. Jeremy Faust have reported that CDC officials received a list of terms that must be removed from their existing or upcoming work. Those terms include “gender,” “LGBT,” “pregnant person” or “pregnant people” and “nonbinary.”

It comes as the White House is reviewing policies around speech and censorship. President Trump signed an executive order banning government employees or taxpayer dollars from being used to censor or limit the free speech of American citizens.

Agencies say the removal is temporary. However, it’s unclear whether the changes the CDC is making to comply with the gender-related order could violate the anti-censorship order.

Many old documents are available through the nonprofit Internet Archive. Users can access them by copying a website’s dead link or the link to any altered data and pasting it into the search box at web.archive.org to see an earlier version.

President Trump suggests US take ‘long-term ownership’ of Gaza Strip

Listen

  • President Donald Trump called for the U.S. to have “long-term ownership” of the Gaza Strip. It comes as Israel and Hamas are working to hold a ceasefire after more than a year of war.
  • It’s the latest of several pushes the president has made to incorporate international land into the U.S.
  • Trump did not rule out a U.S. military presence in Gaza and did not offer an option for Palestinians who wished to stay. Trump said instead that they “have no alternative” but to leave.

President Donald Trump suggested that the U.S. should have a presence in the Gaza Strip in the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas War. He made the comments Tuesday, Feb. 4, while hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump called for the U.S. to own the land. He also said the two million Palestinians who live there “have no alternative” but to leave Gaza. Trump did not lay out an option allowing Palestinians who wish to stay to do so.

“I do see a long-term ownership position, and I see it bringing great stability to that part of the Middle East and maybe the entire Middle East,” Trump said. “And everybody I have spoken to –– this was not a decision made lightly –– everybody I have spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land.”

Leaders in Egypt and Jordan have rejected Trump’s calls to resettle Palestinians.

It’s the latest of several pushes President Trump has made to expand U.S. control of land. Since taking office, he has suggested incorporating Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal Zone into the United States. All of those proposals have received pushback from local leaders.

The president said he may send U.S. troops to the region if he believes it is necessary. That would be a reversal of promises during his first term and on the campaign trail to wind down U.S. military presence outside the U.S. and end what he called “forever wars.”

In his first term in office, President Trump tried unsuccessfully to significantly draw down the number of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He also sought to ensure NATO members paid more of the alliance’s defense spending as part of an effort to limit how much the U.S. spent on defending areas outside its borders.

Trump’s calls for U.S. expansion have sparked fears of war, including in Panama, where the president has threatened “powerful” action.

In Gaza, the president’s suggestion could complicate the current ceasefire that’s holding between Israel and Hamas, as Hamas and the Palestinian people seek to govern themselves. Meanwhile, Israeli government officials would like to incorporate more Palestinian land into Israel.

Trump to sign executive order barring trans women and girls from female sports

Listen

  • President Trump plans to sign an executive order Wednesday banning transgender women and girls from competing in female sports at schools and colleges. The order, titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” coincides with National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
  • South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace will join Trump for the signing. She called the move, which affects federally funded schools, a restoration of fairness and Title IX’s original intent.
  • The Human Rights Campaign criticized the order, arguing it could lead to discrimination and harm transgender youth.

President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order Wednesday, Feb. 5, that will bar transgender women and girls from competing in female sports at schools and colleges.

The order, titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” will be issued on National Girls and Women in Sports Day –– the first Wednesday of each February. During his campaign, Trump pledged to keep people assigned male at birth out of female sports and spaces.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., says she will stand alongside Trump as he signs the action.

“Men are biologically different from women. This executive order restores fairness, upholds Title IX’s original intent, and defends the rights of female athletes who have worked their whole lives to compete at the highest levels,” Mace said in a statement.

The executive order’s specifics remain unclear, but would likely affect schools that receive federal funding. These schools would have to comply with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. It prohibits discrimination based on sex in any educational program or activity.

In April 2024, the Biden administration issued a final rule related to Title IX. The rule expanded the law to include gender identity and sexual orientation. However, a federal district court judge in Kentucky struck down the rule last month.

“The entire point of Title IX is to prevent discrimination based on sex — throwing gender identity into the mix eviscerates the statute and renders it largely meaningless,” Chief Judge Danny Reeves of the Eastern District of Kentucky wrote in his opinion.

The Human Rights Campaign’s president, Kelley Robinson, issued a statement on the organization’s website, saying:

“We all want sports to be fair, students to be safe, and young people to have the opportunity to participate alongside their peers. But an attempted blanket ban deprives kids of those things. This order could expose young people to harassment and discrimination, emboldening people to question the gender of kids who don’t fit a narrow view of how they’re supposed to dress or look. And it comes at a time when the Trump administration continues to distract and divide the country, handing the keys to the federal government to unelected billionaires and refusing to address urgent issues that the country is facing. Participating in sports is about learning the values of teamwork, dedication, and perseverance. And for so many students, sports are about finding somewhere to belong. We should want that for all kids – not partisan policies that make life harder for them.”

According to a 2023 Gallup poll, 69% of Americans say that transgender athletes should only be on teams that match their sex at birth.

Currently, 26 states have laws in place that stop transgender girls and women from competing in school sports. 14 states mandate their participation.

PRESIDENT TRUMP IS SET TO SIGN AN EXECUTIVE ORDER WEDNESDAY THAT WILL BAR TRANSGENDER GIRLS AND WOMEN FROM COMPETING IN FEMALE SPORTS AT SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES.

THE ORDER IS TITLED “KEEPING MEN OUT OF WOMEN’S SPORTS” AND WILL BE ISSUED ON NATIONAL GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY – THE FIRST WEDNESDAY OF EACH FEBRUARY.

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL, PRESIDENT TRUMP PLEDGED TO KEEP BIOLOGICAL MEN OUT OF FEMALE SPORTS AND SPACES. HERE’S TRUMP SPEAKING MORE THAN TWO YEARS AGO ABOUT THE ISSUE…

“AND BY THE WAY, WE SHOULD NOT ALLOW MEN TO PLAY IN WOMEN’ SPORTS”

SOUTH CAROLINA REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE NANCY MACE SAYS SHE WILL STAND ALONGSIDE TRUMP AS HE SIGNS THE ACTION.

“MEN ARE BIOLOGICALLY DIFFERENT FROM WOMEN. THIS EXECUTIVE ORDER RESTORES FAIRNESS, UPHOLDS TITLE IX’S ORIGINAL INTENT, AND DEFENDS THE RIGHTS OF FEMALE ATHLETES WHO HAVE WORKED THEIR WHOLE LIVES TO COMPETE AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS,” MACE PARTIALLY SAID IN A STATEMENT.

THE CONTENTS OF THE “KEEPING MEN OUT OF WOMEN’S SPORTS” E-O IS UNCLEAR, HOWEVER, IT WOULD AFFECT ANY SCHOOL CURRENTLY RECEIVING FEDERAL FUNDING.

FEDERALLY FUNDED SCHOOLS MUST COMPLY WITH TITLE IX (NINE) OF THE EDUCATION AMENDMENTS OF 1972 – WHICH PROHIBITS DISCRIMINATION BASED ON SEX IN ANY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM OR ACTIVITY.

IN APRIL 2024, THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION ISSUED A FINAL RULE RELATED TO TITLE IX – EXPANDING IT TO INCLUDE GENDER IDENTITY AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION.

THE HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN PRESIDENT ISSUED A STATEMENT ON THEIR WEBSITE SAYING QUOTE:

WE SHOULD WANT THAT FOR ALL KIDS – NOT PARTISAN POLICIES THAT MAKE LIFE HARDER FOR THEM,”  HRC PRESIDENT KELLEY ROBINSON SAID.

ACCORDING TO A 2023 GALLUP POLL, 69% OF AMERICANS AGREE THAT TRANSGENDER ATHLETES SHOULD ONLY BE ALLOWED ON TEAMS THAT MATCH THEIR SEX AT BIRTH.

CURRENTLY, 26 STATES HAVE LAWS IN PLACE THAT STOP TRANSGENDER GIRLS AND WOMEN FROM COMPETING IN SCHOOL SPORTS AND ANOTHER 14 STATES MANDATING THEIR PARTICIPATION.

Senate Democrats consider more holds on Trump’s nominees

  • Senate Democrats could place holds on Trump nominees in protest of what they consider to be extreme policies. The holds could affect nominees at the State Department and Justice Department.
  • The senators are protesting Trump’s foreign aid freeze and comments Elon Musk made about USAID.
  • Placing holds on nominees would only delay the confirmation process, not stop it entirely.

Senate Democrats are considering placing holds on more of President Donald Trump’s nominees to protest what they consider extreme policies. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, put a hold on State Department nominees, while Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said he is considering doing the same for Justice Department nominees.

Schatz placed what he described as a “blanket hold” on State Department nominees. It’s to protest President Trump’s freeze on foreign aid and Elon Musk’s statement that he will shut down USAID.

“This freeze is just flatly illegal,” Schatz said. “The executive branch has the obligation to see to it that it’s done in a way that is meritorious, but they don’t get to decide not to spend the money.”

SAN spoke with multiple Republicans about Schatz’s move, who said it’s his prerogative.

“If he wants to defend these policies on the floor, if he wants to go talk about USAID and that they’re spending American money on promoting transgender surgeries for minors abroad, go ahead,” Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said.

Schatz’s hold will only delay the confirmation process, not stop it entirely. Senate rules require multiple votes and 30 hours for debate for each nominee unless there’s an agreement between parties to move faster. So, Schatz is really requiring the chamber to eat up all that time when lower-level nominees are typically confirmed more quickly under a time agreement.

“You have to understand that the procedures in the Senate depend on the votes that you have. If you need 60 votes, we’re in [a] pretty strong position. If you need a simple majority, we’ve lost a few of those votes,”  Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said. “So you have to be an honest and realistic broker and look at these situations individually.”

Durbin led a letter to Justice Department nominees and acting directors demanding answers about firings and reassignments at the DOJ and FBI. He confirmed to Straight Arrow News that placing holds on Justice Department nominees could be an option if they don’t get the answers they want.

Dolly Parton’s role in the ‘Buffy’ reboot

Another familiar name attached to the project is Dolly Parton. Many fans don’t realize she was an uncredited producer on the original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series and the 1992 film that inspired it.

In a 2023 Business Insider interview, Parton shared that she was involved with the show but never visited the set. She was based in Nashville, while production took place in Los Angeles. She also revealed that she never met the cast.

Parton is no stranger to the entertainment world beyond music. She has produced several TV movies, including “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” in 2015. Her 2020 Netflix film, “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square,” won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.

Joss Whedon not involved in ‘Buffy’ reboot

The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot will continue without its original creator, Joss Whedon.

In 2020, “Justice League” actor Ray Fisher accused Whedon of abusive and unprofessional behavior during the film’s reshoots. The following year, “Buffy” star Charisma Carpenter spoke out in a Vanity Fair interview about his alleged misconduct. She accused him of bullying her over her pregnancy and retaliating against her.

Other cast members, including Amber Benson and Michelle Trachtenberg, supported her claims. Given these allegations, Whedon will not be involved in the reboot.

It remains unclear if any other original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” cast members will reprise their roles.

However, with Hulu leading the reboot and big names attached, the project is already generating major buzz.

A Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is reportedly in the works at Hulu—and it’s bringing in major star power.

Deadline reports the series is nearing a pilot order for the reboot, nearly thirty years after the show first staked its claim in pop culture history.

“WELCOME TO SUNNYDALE”

And this time around, Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao is set to helm the project while Sarah Michelle Gellar is expected to reprise her role as Buffy Summers.

Another familiar name returning behind the scenes is Dolly Parton as an executive producer. Many fans don’t realize that Parton was an uncredited producer on the original TV series and the 1992 film that inspired it. In an interview with Business Insider last year, she revealed while she was heavily involved with the show, she never visited the set as she was based in Nashville while production took place in Los Angeles. She also never met the cast.

But producing Buffy wasn’t Dolly’s only venture into TV and film. She has an extensive history of producing projects, including 2015’s “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors” and other made-for-TV movies.

Her 2020 Netflix film “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” even won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.

However, one key figure from the original series will not be involved in the reboot—series creator Joss Whedon. He’s faced significant backlash in recent years due to allegations of misconduct on set.

In 2020, “Justice League” actor Ray Fisher accused Whedon of abusive and unprofessional behavior during reshoots of the 2017 film.

The following year, Buffy star Charisma Carpenter spoke out about Whedon in a Vanity Fair interview, accusing him of creating a toxic work environment. She claimed he bullied her over her pregnancy and retaliated against her—a sentiment echoed by fellow cast members Amber Benson and Michelle Trachtenberg.

As of now, it’s unclear if other original cast members will reprise their roles, but with Hulu leading the charge, this new take on Buffy is starting to generate buzz.

What did the emails say about the Saints and Pelicans?

The emails show executives, including team president Dennis Lauscha and head of communications Greg Bensel, provided public relations support to the church.

At the center of the case is the 2018 release of a list of clergy accused of sexual abuse. The emails suggest that Bensel provided messaging help, drafted potential questions for New Orleans Archbishop Gregory Aymond and discussed handling media inquiries related to the list’s release.

How did the NFL respond to the emails?

During his annual State of the NFL press conference, Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league would not investigate the Saints.

“Mrs. Benson and the Saints are very involved in this community, and they are great corporate citizens,” Goodell said. “Mrs. Benson takes all these matters seriously, particularly for someone with the Catholic Church connections that she does. This is a matter of the FBI. Local law enforcement — nationally and otherwise — are involved with this.

“Mrs. Benson first mentioned this back in 2018 in the context of this,” Goodell continued. “She’s made multiple comments about this. Her transparency of the emails are out there. I leave it to them, but I am confident that they are playing nothing more than a supportive role to help be more transparent in circumstances like this.”

How did the Saints respond?

The Saints responded Monday, Feb. 3, with a media statement on releasing the emails. The team admitted offering PR guidance to the church but insisted no team officials had any say in who was included or removed from the clergy abuse list.

“No member of the Saints organization condones or wants to cover up the abuse that occurred in the Archdiocese of New Orleans,” The statement read in part. “That abuse occurred is a terrible fact. Any suggestion that any Saints employee had any role in removing anyone from the archdiocese’s published lists of credibly accused clergy is categorically false.”

The statement also admonished the media for “using the occasion of Super Bowl week to exploit the disclosure of the leaked emails.”

  • NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell held his “State of the League” press conference Monday, Feb 3. Topics included the league’s DEI hiring efforts, officiating and a potential 18-game schedule.
  • Goodell called the idea that the Kansas City Chiefs get preferential treatment from officials “a ridiculous theory.”
  • The commissioner says Tom Brady has been “incredibly cooperative” in working out potential conflict of interest issues.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell touched on several news-making issues Monday, Feb 3., during his “State of the League” press conference in New Orleans ahead of the 2025 Super Bowl.

Goodell defends the game’s officiating

There were several questions about the league’s officiating and replay review. Goodell called the idea that the Kansas City Chiefs get preferential treatment “a ridiculous theory.” He repeatedly praised the officials, saying they have a tough job, but also said the league will look at technology to support them. That includes the possibility of making more plays reviewable and continuing to test an electronic system to measure first downs.

“I think there are areas like face mask and some of the other areas that I think we could add to and assist the officials in what’s a very fast game,” Goodell said. “They don’t have the benefit of going back and looking at replays from 16 different angles, and the time, and then the debate. They’ve got to make a snap decision. And so again, I’m proud of what they do, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to continue to try to get better.”

The Tom Brady conflict of interest dilemma

Goodell was asked about Tom Brady, Fox’s lead analyst for the Super Bowl. The issue centers around a potential conflict of interest Brady’s ownership in the Las Vegas Raiders could cause while broadcasting games and being involved in production meetings with other teams. The commissioner said they may reevaluate their policies after the season but that things are currently working out with Brady.

“Tom has been incredibly cooperative,” Goodell said. “He calls frequently about it and says, ‘Am I doing OK?’ I think he’s serious that he separates the two and doesn’t put the league or anyone in a position of conflict.”

What does the league’s future look like?

In discussing the game’s growth, the commissioner believes there will be a day when the NFL adds an 18th regular-season game and cuts the preseason down to just two games. However, that change is not imminent.

Goodell said there is a lot of work to be done with the players union during negotiations, particularly regarding player safety.

“Eighteen and two [preseason games] might be a possibility. We know fans love football, and they want more football,” Goodell said. “But we have to be incredibly sensitive and smart with the balance and how we deal with that.”

Meanwhile, international games will continue to expand, according to the commissioner, to 16 per season. Goodell predicted those games might one day lead to a franchise that’s based full-time in an international city. If that were to happen, the league would eventually host an international Super Bowl.

Goodell also revealed the NFL is “working aggressively” on starting both men’s and women’s professional flag football leagues, hoping to introduce flag football into the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The NFL’s biggest week is upon us and it seems the entire sports media world is in New Orleans for Super Bowl 59. Commissioner Roger Goodell always uses that opportunity to speak to reporters about the state of the game and surrounding topics.
Monday, he touched on several news making issues.

The guys in stripes – the officials – were a big topic. Goodell called the idea that the Kansas City Chiefs get preferential treatment “a ridiculous theory.” He backed up his refs saying they have a tough job, but also said they would look at technology to support them, including making more plays reviewable and continuing to test an electronic system to measure first downs.

“I think there are areas like face mask and some of the other areas that I think we could add to that and assist the officials and what’s a very fast game they don’t have the benefit of going back and looking at replays from 16 different angles and the time and then the debate they’ve got to make a snap decision and so I again I’m I’m proud of what they do but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to continue to try to get better”

Speaking of rules, Goodell was asked about Tom Brady, Fox’s lead analyst for the Super Bowl and the potential conflict of interest his ownership in the Las Vegas Raiders may have while broadcasting games and being involved in production meetings with other teams. The Commissioner says they may re-evaluate their policies after the season, but things are working out fine right now.

“Tom has been incredibly cooperative. He calls frequently about it and says, ‘Am I doing, OK?’ I think he’s serious that he separates the two and doesn’t put the league or anyone in a position of conflict.”

On the growth of the game, the Commissioner believes there will be a day when the NFL adds an 18th regular season game and cuts the preseason down to just 2, but it is not imminent. Goodell says there is a lot of work to be done with the union, particularly when it comes to player safety.

“If we do, 18 and two (preseason games) might be a possibility, we know fans love football and they want more football. But we have to be incredibly sensitive and smart with the balance and how we deal with that.”

There will, however, be continued expansion of international games with the goal of holding 16 per season. Goodell predicted those games may one day lead to a franchise based full-time in an international city, and that if that took place, eventually, the league would host an international Super Bowl.

And one more note on growing the game, the NFL is “working aggressively” on starting both men’s and women’s professional flag football leagues, hoping also to introduce Flag football into the 2028 Olympic games in Los Angeles.

Crews in Japan have been trying to reach a truck driver trapped in a massive sinkhole since Jan. 28. As concern grows over the safety of the roads, a plan to use artificial intelligence to help improve the country’s infrastructure is in the works.

Japanese officials asked more than a million people to avoid taking showers or doing laundry while rescuers tried to reach the 74-year-old man.

His condition is unknown at this time.

How did the sinkhole happen?

Authorities believe a ruptured sewage pipe caused the sinkhole just north of Tokyo on Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The estimated 15-meter-deep sinkhole swallowed a large truck. It caused heavy debris to pile up and sewage to spew from the scene.

Rescuers haven’t been able to launch a full-scale search due to safety concerns.

Can residents use water yet?

Residents are still told to avoid using water unless “absolutely necessary” so rescuers can see if the stoppage would change the water level inside the sinkhole.

What’s going on with Japan’s infrastructure?

This latest incident follows a series of road cave-ins across the country, also caused by aged sewage pipes, drawing attention to an aging infrastructure issue.

According to Japan Forward, a Japanese agricultural machinery company is currently focusing on a rehabilitation method that strengthens sewer pipes by inserting a new pipe inside the existing one and securing it with resin.

But, the company is also planning to launch a system that uses artificial intelligence to predict water pipe damage caused by natural disasters such as earthquakes.

The system combines two AI models to identify high-risk areas for water outages. It allows officials to prioritize earthquake-resistant upgrades in critical locations.

The company is expected to roll out the AI monitoring in April.

CREWS IN JAPAN ARE STILL TRYING TO REACH A TRUCK DRIVER … TRAPPED NOW FOR A WEEK IN A MASSIVE SINKHOLE.

AND … AS CONCERN GROWS OVER THE SAFETY OF THE ROADS … THERE’S A PLAN IN THE WORKS TO USE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO HELP IMPROVE THE COUNTRY’S INFRASTRUCTURE.

WE FIRST REPORTED ON THIS STORY LAST WEEK … WHEN JAPAN OFFICIALS ASKED MORE THAN A MILLION PEOPLE TO AVOID TAKING SHOWERS OR DOING LAUNDRY … WHILE RESCUERS TRIED TO REACH THE 74 YEAR OLD MAN.

HIS CONDITION IS UNKNOWN AT THIS TIME.

AUTHORITIES BELIEVE THE SINKHOLE THAT HAPPENED JUST NORTH OF TOKYO LAST TUESDAY … WAS CAUSED BY A RUPTURED SEWAGE PIPE.

THE ESTIMATED 15 METER-DEEP SINKHOLE SWALLOWED THE TRUCK … CAUSING HEAVY DEBRIS TO PILE UP AND SEWAGE TO SPEW FROM THE SCENE.

RESCUERS HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO LAUNCH A FULL-SCALE SEARCH DUE TO SAFETY REASONS.

RESIDENTS ARE STILL BEING TOLD TO AVOID USING WATER … UNLESS “ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY” SO RESCUERS CAN SEE IF THE STOPPAGE WOULD CHANGE THE WATER LEVEL INSIDE THE SINKHOLE.

THIS LATEST INCIDENT FOLLOWS A SERIES OF ROAD CAVE-INS ACROSS THE COUNTRY – ALSO CAUSED BY AGED SEWAGE PIPES, DRAWING ATTENTION TO AN AGING INFRASTRUCTURE ISSUE.

ACCORDING TO “JAPAN FORWARD”, A JAPANESE AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY COMPANY IS CURRENTLY FOCUSING ON A REHABILITATION METHOD THAT STRENGTHENS SEWER PIPES BY INSERTING A NEW PIPE INSIDE THE EXISTING ONE AND SECURING IT WITH RESIN.

BUT, THE COMPANY IS ALSO PLANNING TO LAUNCH A SYSTEM THAT USES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO PREDICT WATER PIPE DAMAGE CAUSED BY NATURAL DISASTERS SUCH AS EARTHQUAKES.

THE SYSTEM COMBINES TWO A-I MODELS TO IDENTIFY HIGH-RISK AREAS FOR WATER OUTAGES ALLOWING OFFICIALS TO PRIORITIZE EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT UPGRADES IN CRITICAL LOCATION.

THE COMPANY IS EXPECTED TO ROLL OUT THE A-I MONITORING IN APRIL.
