China hits back at US with tariffs of up to 15% on American goods

China responded to President Donald Trump’s newly imposed tariffs with some of its own. China’s finance ministry said Tuesday that starting next Monday, Feb. 10, it will impose additional tariffs of 15% on coal and liquefied natural gas imports from the U.S. and 10% higher duties on American crude oil, farm equipment, and certain cars.

China’s announcement came just minutes after Trump’s additional 10% tariff on all Chinese goods took effect.

At the same time, Trump paused the 25% tariffs he promised to impose on Canada and Mexico for 30 days. Straight Arrow News reporter Lauren Taylor has the details of that pause here

Trump has not yet spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping about the tariffs but is expected to do so in the next few days. In addition to the tariffs against the U.S., China has also filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization.

El Salvador offers to house violent U.S. criminals and deportees of any nationality

As the U.S. continues its crackdown on undocumented immigrants, El Salvador has offered the Trump administration an unprecedented deal

After meeting with El Salvadorian President Nayib Bukele, Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained the details of the offer.

“He has agreed to accept for deportation any illegal alien in the United States who is a criminal from any nationality, be they MS-13 or Tren de Aragua, and house them in his jails,” Rubio said. “And he’s also offered to do the same for dangerous criminals currently in custody and serving their sentence in the United States even though they’re U.S. citizens or legal residents.

El Salvador’s president said in a post on X, “We have offered the United States the opportunity to outsource part of its prison system. We are willing to take in, only convicted criminals, including convicted U.S. citizens, into our mega-prison in exchange for a fee. The fee would be relatively low for the U.S. but significant for us, making our entire prison system, sustainable.”

It’s unclear when such a transfer might begin or if it would even be legal.

The stop in El Salvador was part of a larger tour of Central America for Secretary of State Rubio. Before heading there, Rubio was in Panama, seeking assurances on curbing China’s influence over the Panama Canal.

Rubio is also scheduled to visit Costa Rica, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic this week.

Large pieces of American Airlines jet pulled from river; more remains found

Salvage crews continued Tuesday to remove the wreckage of an American Eagle passenger jet in the Potomac River near Washington, D.C.

On Monday, Feb. 3, the first day of operations, they removed an engine and large portions of the plane’s fuselage from the water.

Investigators said the plane broke apart into three pieces in the river. Officials said the remains of the jet must be removed from the crash site to recover all 67 victims who died in the mid-air collision between Flight 5432 and an Army Black Hawk helicopter last Wednesday night, Jan. 29.

So far, officials have positively identified 55 victims. They vowed to recover everyone. Searchers found additional remains during recovery efforts Monday, but they have not yet been identified.

Once the jet’s wreckage is cleared, crews will start working to remove what remains of the helicopter. They will haul both aircraft to a National Transportation Safety Board hangar for a lengthy investigation into what caused the deadly crash.

Elon Musk creates confusion over IRS’ free tax filing program

Tax season is here, and several Americans are banking on the IRS’ new Direct File system to make life easier. However, they might find themselves confused about a recent social media post by Department of Government Efficiency Chair Elon Musk.

Musk shared a user’s post about the free program on his platform X and said, “That group has been deleted.”

That led to concerns that Americans would not be able to use the new tool to file their 2024 taxes. However, the Direct File has not been “deleted” and is still available, at least for this tax season.

Musk was referring to 18F, a government agency that worked on technology projects, including the IRS’s Direct File program. Last year, the IRS announced it would make the free electronic tax return filing system permanent.

Tax Day this year is Tuesday, April 15.

  • State Farm is asking California’s insurance commissioner for permission to raise premiums by an average of 22%. It comes as Southern California begins to rebuild after deadly wildfires.
  • The insurance giant says it needs to adjust prices to account for higher risk as climate change makes wildfires more likely.
  • California’s Department of Insurance said it was concerned about a potential gap between State Farm’s request, which cited financial troubles, and the company’s actual condition.

As Los Angeles rebuilds its communities following last month’s devastating fires, State Farm is asking California for permission to raise its insurance premiums by an average of 22%. The company says it has lost money over the past decade as disaster risks increase, while payouts for the recent fires will be the costliest disasters in the company’s history.

State Farm says one credit ratings company downgraded its financial strength last year due to its capital position. They say more wildfires could exacerbate the issue.

As reports, including one from World Weather Attribution, find wildfires like the recent ones in LA are tied to climate change, insurance companies are looking to raise prices to account for higher risk.

Fires in and around Los Angeles last month killed 29 people and caused billions of dollars in damages.

“Insurance will cost more for customers in California going forward because the risk is greater in California,” the company said in a press release. “Higher risks should pay more for insurance than lower risks.”

Last fall, the company faced accusations, later confirmed in reporting by the Los Angeles Times, that its California branch passed along hundreds of millions of dollars in profits to its parent company while simultaneously claiming that financial distress justified a 30% rate hike.

California’s Department of Insurance said it will work toward crafting a policy recommendation for the state’s insurance commissioner.

Gabriel Sanchez, the department’s press secretary, told USA Today that “State Farm General’s rate filings raise serious questions about its financial condition.”

State Farm said it has paid over $1 billion in insurance claims. It’s part of the over $4 billion insurance companies have paid out statewide.

The company also gave some relief to policyholders last month during the fires. They offered renewals for those it had originally planned to drop due to concerns about risk.

NFL star Myles Garrett requests trade from Cleveland Browns

  • Star defensive end Myles Garrett has requested a trade from the Cleveland Browns. Garrett led the Browns with 14 sacks this past season.
  • Garrett posted a letter to social media saying his goal “has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.”
  • The Browns have no intention of trading Garrett.

One of the NFL’s biggest stars has decided he wants a change of scenery after 8 years in Cleveland. Defensive end Myles Garrett requested a trade from the Browns on Monday, Feb 3.

Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, spoke in the final weeks of a disappointing 3-14 season about wanting to know the team’s off-season plans before committing to the Browns long-term. He said he did not want to go through another roster rebuild. On January 4th, during his season-ending press conference, he was asked how long it would take to decide on his future.

“Obviously, emotions are high with how the season went. Guys don’t feel very good about, you know, whether it’s individual performances or the record, and you have to, you know, take a step back and allow yourself to decompress and then, you know, make the best decision for yourself.” Garrett said.

The Browns have had a losing record in 6 of Garrett’s 8 seasons in Cleveland. He has two years remaining on the record-breaking five-year, $125 million extension he signed in 2020 but no more guaranteed salary. This past season, he had 14 sacks, good for 2nd in the league and became the first player to record 100 career sacks before his 29th birthday.

On social media Monday, he explained his decision: “As a kid dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl — and that goal fuels me today more than ever,” Garrett wrote. “My love for the community of Northeast Ohio and the incredible fanbase of the Cleveland Browns has made this one of the toughest decisions of my life. These past eight years have shaped me into the man that I am today. While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent. The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl. With that in mind, I have requested to be traded from the Cleveland Browns.”

Twice in the past month, Browns general manager Andrew Berry publicly stated he had no intention of trading Garrett. At the Senior Bowl last week, he told reporters he would not even entertain a hypothetical offer of two first-round picks for the franchise cornerstone.

Garrett, who is the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, spoke in the final weeks of a disappointing 3-14 season about wanting to know the team’s off-season plans before committing long term. He said he did not want to go through another roster rebuild. On January 4th, he was asked how long it would take to decide on his future, even though he’s under contract for two more seasons.

“While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent…

The Browns have said repeatedly they have no interest in trading their future Hall of Fame defensive end. Reports say that stance has not changed even after Garrett’s request.

How January workout mistakes turn into February doctor visits

Kennedy Felton Lifestyle Correspondent/Producer

  • While gyms fill with determined people eager to start fresh fitness routines in January, many find themselves injured by February. A study reveals which body parts are the most common trouble spots.
  • Melanie McNeal from Baylor University’s Joseph Barnhart Department of Orthopedic Surgery emphasizes the importance of stretching before and after workouts to prevent injuries.
  • Experts suggest increasing weights gradually, icing sore muscles, and using compression sleeves to stabilize muscles and joints.

Every January, gyms fill with determined people eager to start fresh workout routines. But by February, many find themselves swapping protein shakes for painkillers.

A study reported by The Daily Sentinel highlights how January’s fitness resolutions often lead to February injuries. Research from High Rise Financial analyzed data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to determine the most frequently injured body parts.

The upper trunk, lower trunk and knees were the three most injury-prone areas. Fingers also made the list, rounding out the top 10.

Why do so many people get injured?

The reasons for these injuries vary. Many people jump into intense workouts too quickly after months or years of inactivity. This sudden shift often leads to muscle strains or serious injuries.

Another common cause is poor form. Beginners who don’t know the proper techniques for lifting weights or using gym equipment are more likely to get hurt.

Skipping warm-ups and cooldowns, dehydration and overexertion also increase the risk of injuries.

How to prevent workout injuries

Melanie McNeal, a physical and occupational therapy manager at Baylor University’s Joseph Barnhart Department of Orthopedic Surgery, offers key advice. In a Baylor Health article, she says that stretching before and after workouts is crucial.

She compares it to melting something in the microwave—just like heat softens an object, warming up increases blood flow to the muscles, helping them stretch further and lowering injury risk.

McNeal also emphasizes preventative care. She recommends building core strength before adding heavier lifting exercises.

Safe ways to reach your fitness goals

To avoid injuries, experts suggest:

  • Increasing weights gradually rather than pushing too hard too soon.
  • Icing sore muscles throughout the day to reduce inflammation.
  • Using compression sleeves to stabilize muscles and joints.

Your fitness goals are achievable — but avoiding injuries requires patience, proper form and recovery strategies. These precautions can help ensure your New Year’s workout routine doesn’t become a February doctor visit.

Internal CBP memo warns agents of new threats from Mexican cartels: Reports

Listen

  • Internal memos are reportedly warning U.S. Border Patrol agents that Mexican drug cartels have authorized the use of kamikaze drones and explosives to target agents. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection memos caution agents to remain vigilant and equipped for potential threats.
  • One memo also highlights social media posts encouraging violence against ICE officers.
  • These warnings come as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to secure the border. His actions include mass deportations and the designation of cartels as terrorist organizations.

Internal memos reviewed by NewsNation and The New York Post warn U.S. Border Patrol agents that Mexican drug cartels have authorized the use of kamikaze drones and explosives to target agents and other U.S. law enforcement at the southern U.S. border.

The outlets cite internal memos from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials highlighting potential threats in response to the Trump administration’s high-profile stance on border security.

One memo, titled “Officer Safety Alert,” cautions federal agents to “remain cognizant of their surroundings at all times.”

“On February 1, 2025, the El Paso Sector Intelligence and Operations Center (EPT-IOC) received information advising that Mexican cartel leaders have authorized the deployment of drones equipped with explosives to be used against U.S. Border Patrol agents and U.S. military personnel currently working along the border with Mexico,” the memo states.

The memo also urges border agents to report drone sightings and carry proper equipment, such as first aid kits, tourniquets and body armor.

One of the memos cites social media posts, including one encouraging people to kill ICE officers. A TikTok video also tells immigrants living in the U.S. illegally to spit and urinate on federal agents’ food and defecate in their vehicles.

Last week, the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that border agents in Fronton Island, Texas, were shot at from the Mexican side of the U.S.-southern border.

On Jan. 20, Trump signed an executive order designating the cartels as terrorist organizations. The CBP memos come as the Trump administration takes action to mitigate the flow of migrants and fentanyl from crossing the border.

The Trump administration has promised mass deportations of migrants living in the U.S. illegally. Since Trump’s inauguration, federal immigration agents have arrested 8,276 migrants lacking proper paperwork, according to numbers the agency posted on X.

Over the weekend, Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada. He says the countries were not doing enough to stop migrants and illicit drugs from pouring into the U.S.

However, those deals are currently delayed. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has promised to send an additional 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also committed to providing more resources for fighting fentanyl and classifying cartels as terrorists.

El Salvador to take deported migrants from US, regardless of nationality

  • El Salvador agreed to accept deported immigrants from the U.S., including violent criminals, under a new agreement announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
  • President Nayib Bukele offered to house American criminals in El Salvador’s jails, but the U.S. has no immediate plans to deport American citizens due to legal challenges.
  • In addition to the deportation deal, Secretary Rubio signed a civil nuclear cooperation MOU with El Salvador and secured Panama’s agreement to stop participating in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

El Salvador agreed to accept deported immigrants from the United States, regardless of their nationality, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Monday, Feb. 3. The safe third-party agreement will allow the United States to send violent criminals currently serving prison sentences to the Central American country, including MS-13 and Tren de Aragua gang members.

The secretary general of El Salvador’s leftist opposition party criticized the deportation agreement. According to the AP, Manuel Flores said it would send a signal that Central America’s Northern Triangle is Washington’s “backyard to dump the garbage.”

In addition to immigrants, President Bukele offered to house American criminals in El Salvador’s jails, including U.S. citizens and legal residents. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce described the offer as an extraordinary gesture that has never been extended by any country before.

A government official told the AP the U.S. has no immediate plans to deport Americans to the country. The outlet said the U.S. cannot deport American citizens, and any attempt to do so would bring significant legal challenges.

In addition to the deportation deal, Secretary Rubio signed a civil nuclear cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) with El Salvador. Under these agreements, the United States helps countries take the first steps to develop infrastructure for nuclear energy and technology. The MOU can eventually lead to additional agreements that allow the building of nuclear reactors.

Rubio’s stop in El Salvador is part of a multi-country trip to Central America. Earlier in the day, he witnessed a deportation flight in Panama and thanked the country for cracking down on illegal immigration in the Darien Gap, a route used to reach the United States.

Panama also agreed to stop participating in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, the CCP’s global infrastructure project. The initiative aims to boost the CCP’s political power on the world stage and create dependence on China for investments and trade.

For 25 years, The Sims has been a go-to game for creativity and self-expression. The life simulation franchise lets players build dream homes, design digital selves and live out endless possibilities.

But people aren’t just playing the game anymore. In many ways, The Sims predicted how people express themselves in today’s digital world.

On Feb. 4, 2000, The Sims introduced a simple idea — what if you could create and control an entire life? The game’s success led to four main versions, with dozens of expansion packs and re-releases keeping the franchise fresh.

Its original release, The Sims 1, included a recommended reading list in the manual featuring literature and fictional titles meant to enhance players’ understanding of the game’s themes.

The evolution of The Sims

Despite its humor, The Sims became a blueprint for something bigger.

  • The Sims 2 (2004) introduced complex emotions and family dynamics.
  • The Sims 3 (2009) gave players a seamless open-world experience.
  • The Sims 4 (2014) offered more customization than ever, allowing players to experience everything from college life to eco-friendly neighborhoods.

The franchise kept evolving, but players wanted even more control.

Mods — short for modifications — transformed The Sims beyond what developers originally designed.

Creators introduced highly detailed custom fashion, improved emotional responses, and even supernatural storylines. Some mods changed how Sims interact, adding realism with acne, social anxiety and personality tweaks. Others introduced entirely new fantasy worlds.

“When I was in high school, I thought I’d like to go into architecture,” one player said. “So when The Sims came along, it just seemed like the best outlet for me to show my creativity.”

The Sims’ real-world impact

According to a press release from EA, The Sims 4 is the most widely played game in franchise history, with more than 70 million players worldwide.

The franchise’s influence extends beyond gaming. The Sims has shaped how people interact online. Social media, virtual influencers and AI-driven self-expression reflect many ideas first explored in The Sims.

Players once designed characters with unique personas and controlled social lives in the game. Today, the same concept plays out in real life with AI-generated influencers and virtual identities.

Celebrating 25 years of The Sims

As The Sims enters its 25th year, EA is celebrating the game’s legacy. The company has re-released The Sims 1 and The Sims 2, allowing longtime fans and new players to experience the games that started it all.

For 25 years, The Sims has been a go-to game for creativity and self-expression—letting players build dream homes, design digital avatars, and live out endless possibilities.

But people aren’t just playing the game anymore. In many ways, The Sims predicted how we express ourselves in today’s digital world.

February 4, 2000. The Sims introduced a simple idea—what if you could create and control an entire life? They made that possible with not one, but four main versions of the game along with dozens of expansion packs and re-releases, keeping the franchise relevant for decades.

With the original release of “The Sims 1”, a “recommended reading” list was included in the game’s manual, introducing the game to the world by featuring literature and fictional titles aiming to enhance the players’ understanding of the game’s themes.

FOR EXAMPLE – “Home: A Short History of an Idea” EXPLORES THE EVOLUTION OF HOME DESIGN…

… WHILE “A PATTERN LANGUAGE” DISCUSSES HOW PEOPLE INTERACT WITH SPACE – MUCH LIKE HOW SIMS NAVIGATE THEIR HOMES.

“RELAX… IT’S JUST A JOKE!”

But even as the game kept its lighthearted tone, it also became a blueprint for something much bigger. The Sims 2 in 2004 introduced more complex emotions and family dynamics…

…while The Sims 3 gave players an open world experience.

By the time The Sims 4 arrived in 2014, the game was more customizable than ever, with expansions allowing players to live out everything from college life to eco-friendly neighborhoods.

But even with all the official updates, players wanted more control over their simulated worlds—leading to the rise of mods, short for modifications.

MODS EXPANDED THE GAME WITH HIGHLY DETAILED CUSTOM FASHION… ENHANCED EMOTIONAL REACTIONS… AND EVEN NEW LIFE SIMULATIONS FROM SUPERNATURAL BEINGS… ALLOWING PLAYERS TO PUSH THE BOUNDARIES OF THEIR CREATIVITY.

“WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, I THOUGHT I’D LIKE TO GO INTO ARCHITECTURE so when The Sims came along it just seemed like the best outlet for me to show my creativity.”

While some players use it to build upon their own creative skills, the Senior Animation Director for The Sims tells “Fast Company”:

“When you’re cooking, or going to sleep, or making up the bed, or doing these life actions, a lot of your players actually want to experience them in this extremely whimsical and playful fashion. Nobody wants to see that in a replica of actual real life the exact same way,” – Nawwaf Barakat

And players did just that. According to EA, The Sims 4 game became the most widely played game in the franchise history, with more than 70 million players worldwide as of 2023 and more than 500 million players since 2000.

Fast forward to today—we’re seeing that same creativity used to play the game shape the way we interact online. The line between virtual life and real life is blurring, in a way that makes the game feel more relevant than ever—whether through modding, social media, or customized AI chatbots like Replika.

“THE DEEPER OUR CONVERSATIONS, THE MORE WE OPEN UP, THE MORE I CAN DO FOR YOU.”

As The Sims enters its 25th year, creators are celebrating the franchise’s legacy with re-releases of The Sims 1 and The Sims 2, allowing both longtime fans and new players to experience the game that started it all.

Some migrants stay in US on monitoring program after ICE arrests: Report

  • Migrants arrested under the Trump administration have been released into the U.S. on monitoring programs. Limited detention space and legal constraints are forcing ICE to release some individuals.
  • The monitoring programs aim to ensure individuals attend their immigration hearings without resorting to detention.
  • President Trump is working to secure deportation deals with non-cooperative countries.

Some migrants arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under the Trump administration have been released back into the United States on a monitoring program. That’s according to NBC News, citing five anonymous sources familiar with the matter.

Just last week, Straight Arrow News reported that President Donald Trump was requesting ICE field offices ramp up arrests of migrants residing in the country illegally to between 1,200 and 1,500 per day.

However, space to house the migrants is limited, and according to law, ICE is not allowed to detain them indefinitely.

In December, Trump’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, said ICE needed an additional 100,000 beds for undocumented immigrants who would soon be awaiting deportation.

An ICE spokesperson told NBC News that if the agency has migrants from countries that refuse to repatriate them, ICE could release them back into the U.S.

“The agency’s federal law enforcement officers do everything they can to keep our communities safe,” the spokesperson told NBC News. “In some cases, ICE is required to release certain arrested aliens from custody.”

When a migrant living in the country illegally is released from ICE custody and placed in a monitoring program, they’re subject to electronic monitoring, supervision, case management and regular phone or video check-ins. These programs aim to ensure individuals attend their immigration hearings without resorting to detention.

Meanwhile, Trump is working to secure deals with countries that have not cooperated with U.S. deportations in the past. On Saturday, Feb. 1, Trump announced Venezuela would accept its citizens who were living illegally in the U.S.
