
Pope has ‘good night’ as he battles double pneumonia and kidney failure

- Vatican officials said Pope Francis had a restful night of sleep on Sunday. They said he’s now resting as he continues to battle double lung pneumonia and mild kidney failure.
- The Pope remains in critical condition and continues to be on oxygen as doctors monitor him for sepsis, which can occur as a complication of pneumonia.
- Prayers are coming in from around the world and well-wishers will pray the rosary at St. Peter’s Square Monday night.

Pope Francis was awake Monday, Feb. 24, and continuing therapy, according to the Vatican. It said the pontiff had a quiet night and remains in critical condition, as he battles pneumonia in both his lungs. The infection has also led to early stages of kidney insufficiency.

What was another long-term hospital stay for the Pope?
Monday marked the 11th day of the Pope’s hospital visit. It also marked the longest period the Pope has spent in the hospital since he became the leader of the Catholic Church in 2013.
He spent 10 days at a hospital in Rome in 2021 for the removal of part of his colon.
What does his treatment entail?
There was some encouraging news on Sunday, Feb. 23, as doctors said that Pope Francis had not experienced any further respiratory crises. They also said that the early signs of kidney insufficiency were under control.
The Pope continues to receive high flows of oxygen. Doctors are monitoring him for sepsis, which is a blood infection that can occur as a complication of pneumonia.
A Vatican official said the 88-year-old Pope has been able to get up and move about his hospital room in Rome.
