Shannon Longworth:
The Postal service is taking on a tall order. All in an attempt to safeguard the integrity of our elections.
The agency is creating a new division dedicated only to election matters. It’s called the Election and Government Mail Services.
The move follows what we saw in 2020 when there were backlogs in processing absentee ballots.
Leaders of this new division say timeliness is a priority.
This new, specific effort is a change…just two years ago, under postmaster general Louis DeJoy, the USPS was cutting costs–potentially contributing to those ballot backlogs
Louis DeJoy:
“When I joined the postal service in June of 2020, we were about three months into the pandemic and our financial situation was dire. We were forecasted to lose 20 billion dollars in 2020 and potentially run out of cash in September of that year.”
Shannon Longworth:
At the time, former President Trump publicly criticized mail-in voting as an option in our elections.
