The facility is known to house several inmates who identify as Islamic State militants. It’s reported they took hostages and claimed control of part of the complex.
Special forces were able to storm the complex and free several hostages, but three prison guards were killed during the initial attack. A fourth later died in the hospital.
The attackers were armed with knives, and reportedly slashed multiple guards. Footage was shared on social media, which appears to show an inmate standing over a bloody prison guard. In addition, the attackers released their own video, claiming the attack was in retaliation for the persecution of Muslims.
Russian authorities have since confirmed that snipers neutralized all four attackers. With the prison now back under control, authorities are trying to figure out how the prisoners managed to take hostages in the first place.
