Raid affidavit release, Solomon Islands isolation, anniversary of Kabul killing

On August 26, 2022, a redacted version of the affidavit used in the raid on Mar-a-Lago will be released to the public, a U.S. coast guard vessel was blocked from entering the Solomon Islands amid ongoing tensions with China, and today is the anniversary of a suicide bomb attack in Kabul that killed 13 U.S. servicemembers as the U.S. withdrew from Afghanistan.

Affidavit used in Trump raid to be released – the partially redacted affidavit used in the raid on former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence is set to be released. The judge said it should come by noon eastern time Friday. The judge said the Department of Justice had met “its burden of showing that its proposed redactions are narrowly tailored to serve the Government’s legitimate interest in the integrity of the ongoing investigation and are the least onerous alternative to sealing the entire Affidavit.”

Today is also the deadline for Trump’s legal team to clarify his request for a Special Master to review the documents collected by the FBI. His team filed a lawsuit against the DOJ on Friday.

U.S. Coast Guard entry blocked into Solomon Islands – In a potential sign of escalating tensions with China, a U.S. Coast Guard vessel was reportedly unable to enter the Solomon Islands for a routine port call to refuel. The Solomon Islands has a security pact with China reached earlier this year. Social media reports have pointed to the same thing happening to a British patrol vessel.

Anniversary of 13 U.S. service members killed in Kabul – Friday marks the one-year anniversary of a suicide bombing at the Kabul Airport. The bombing killed more than 170 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members. The bombing is seen as the lowest point of a hectic evacuation from Afghanistan ending 20 years of war.
