Rising cost of eggs could affect iconic Easter egg tradition
By Devin Pavlou (Digital Producer)
- As egg prices continue to rise, some fear the Easter tradition of dying eggs could be impacted. Natural Earth Paint, a major egg dye manufacturer, has seen a significant drop in orders from 50,000 kits to 7,000 kits so far this year.
- Egg prices have nearly doubled in the past six weeks, with the average cost of a dozen eggs now over $8. The increase is due to a highly contagious bird flu virus and the culling of millions of birds.
- Paas, a leading egg dye kit company, found that 94% of surveyed consumers still plan to dye eggs, and the later Easter date this year (April 20) may help manufacturers.

How much have egg prices risen?
In the past six weeks, egg prices have nearly doubled. The average cost of a dozen eggs is more than $8.
The rise in cost is due to a highly contagious bird flu virus, which has resulted in millions of birds having to be culled.
Is there a plan to lower egg prices?
The Trump administration announced a plan to lower egg prices on Wednesday, Feb. 26. The five-point plan is expected to cost $1 billion. Trump officials have said the plan will be funded by savings found by the Department of Government Efficiency.
The Trump administration’s plan to lower egg prices includes:
- $500 million for biosecurity measures at farms.
- $400 million in financial relief for farmers whose flocks are affected.
- Research on vaccines and therapeutics.
- Reducing regulations for commercial farmers and making it easier for families to raise their own.
- Importing more eggs that meet US standards.
How badly could egg dye companies be impacted?
Many of these egg dye companies receive the majority of their sales in the Easter season. For instance, Natural Earth Paint’s bestselling product for 13 years has been the company’s egg dye kit.
Another manufacturer, Color Kitchen, said Easter items make up 20% of the company’s total stock of items. Company officials said Easter items also vastly outsell other holiday items.
Other companies like Hey Buddy Hey Pal are less worried, according to CNBC. The company makes the Eggmazing Egg Decorator and company officials still expect record-breaking sales.
Will people decorate eggs this year?
Despite the increased cost of eggs, experts still believe many families will still opt for the holiday tradition.
Paas, the leading egg dye kit company, expects many families will decorate fewer eggs. The company recently surveyed 120 consumers and found 94% of them still expect to dye eggs.
“And the reason for that, other than the tradition being so important to consumers, is if you really break down the cost of the tradition, it is arguably the most affordable family tradition during any holiday,” Joe Ens, CEO of Paas’ parent company Signature Brands, said.
