The city of San Francisco wants to pay Black residents a one-time payment of $5 million as part of a plan of proposed reparations. The city’s Board of Supervisors unanimously accepted the proposal earlier this week. But the city’s NAACP chapter has expressed surprising criticism, as it’s now coming out against the city’s plan.
In a newly released document, the San Francisco branch has outlined why a one-time payment of millions of dollars doesn’t add up. They are calling on the city to reject the payments and instead redirect the money into investments in five key areas: education, jobs, housing, healthcare and a cultural center in the city for Black people.
The initial draft plan approved this week is only the beginning of a longer process. A final report including board feedback is due in June, and the board will meet again on the issue in September.
