Secret Service questioned over Trump assassination attempt procedures

Share

New details about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania are prompting questions over potential shortcomings in the Secret Service’s security measures. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, scaled the building moments before he opened fire, injuring Trump, killing one spectator and critically injuring two others.

In response, President Joe Biden ordered an independent review of the Secret Service’s protocols with the aim of tightening security measures at future events. Meanwhile, congressional leaders from both parties have united in calling for investigations and strengthened security protocols.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle affirmed the agency’s full cooperation with the independent review and any congressional committee hearings.

“It is a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously, and I am committed to fulfilling that mission,” Cheatle said.

Cheatle announced that the agency has already modified Trump’s security detail, particularly in preparation for the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee. These changes are part of a broader enhancement to security protocols introduced in June.

Cheatle also praised the quick actions of Secret Service personnel at the rally who effectively neutralized Crooks. However, questions remain regarding how Crooks managed to position himself within 130 yards of the stage.

The Associated Press reported that just moments before gunfire erupted, attendees at the rally spotted a man scaling a nearby building.

An officer climbed to the roof, where Crooks raised his rifle to him. The officer retreated down the ladder as Crooks took aim and fired at former President Trump.

Explosive devices were also discovered in Crooks’ car, intensifying inquiries into the comprehensiveness of Secret Service’s advanced security procedures.

The July 13 assassination attempt has prompted urgent calls for Secret Service protection for all presidential candidates, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Kennedy’s campaign has incurred $1.4 million in debt to a private security firm after repeated denials of Secret Service protection by the Biden administration.
