Street racing in Austin leads to injury, damage to police cars

Share

Austin, Texas, is a city known for its lively scene on weekends. But video taken over the weekend shows street racing leading to chaos in the streets.

An officer was injured after rocks, bottles and fireworks were thrown at police and patrol cars. The video shows a large crowd of individuals forcing a police car to back away.

Vehicles were blocking a busy intersection, and several cars were racing, spinning out, running lights and shooting fireworks. Social media posts show it was a large, organized event. A car club is said to have been the cause of the unrest.

So far, only two people have been arrested in connection with the street racing. But police said the investigation is ongoing and could result in further charges being filed. Still, some are saying more needs to be done.

“Austin policy makers are directly responsible for the overall safety of their citizens & visitors. Looks like they failed to make the right decisions & continue to defund, destroy, & demoralize public safety. Austin was one of the safest cities, not anymore,” said the Austin Police Association in a tweet
