THE U.S. AIR FORCE JUST AWARDED A 409 MILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT TO BRING BACK TO LIFE A HISTORIC WORLD WAR II AIRFIELD ON THE SMALL ISLAND OF TINIAN IN THE PACIFIC
THE EFFORT TO REVITALIZE THE HUB IN THE NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS IS PART OF A LARGER STRATEGY TO COUNTER RISING TENSIONS WITH CHINA AND ENSURE THE U.S. IS READY TO RESPOND QUICKLY IN THE REGION.
THE AIRFIELD, WHICH PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE DURING WORLD WAR II, HAS BEEN DORMANT FOR DECADES. BUT NOW, THE AIR FORCE IS CLEARING THE OVERGROWTH AND RESTORING IT TO FULL OPERATIONAL USE. THIS IS PART OF THEIR AGILE COMBAT EMPLOYMENT STRATEGY, WHICH SPREADS FORCES ACROSS SMALLER, HARDER-TO-TARGET BASES TO INCREASE FLEXIBILITY.
JUST NORTH OF GUAM, TINIAN IS A KEY LOCATION IN THE PACIFIC AND WILL ACT AS A BACKUP CENTER FOR AIR OPERATIONS, ESPECIALLY WITH TENSIONS OVER TAIWAN SHOWING NO SIGN OF COOLING DOWN.
SATELLITE IMAGES SHOW THE PROJECT IS ALREADY MAKING SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS.
THE AIRFIELD IS SET TO PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE IN KEEPING U.S. FORCES READY FOR ANYTHING THAT MIGHT HAPPEN IN THE REGION.
