Has Israel linked the attack to broader tensions?

Authorities have treated the attack as a militant act. Hamas praised the stabbing but did not claim responsibility.

The incident comes amid ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza and stalled ceasefire talks.

What plan does Egypt have for Gaza?

Arab foreign ministers met in Cairo to discuss an Egyptian plan for rebuilding Gaza. The proposal calls for temporary zones for displaced residents and an interim Palestinian administration unaffiliated with Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.

The plan contrasts with a separate proposal backed by President Donald Trump. The American president aims to relocate Palestinians outside of Gaza.

How has Israel responded?

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was testifying in his corruption trial when the Haifa attack occurred. He stepped out of court to offer condolences and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded.

He vowed to continue fighting those who seek to harm Israelis.

Hamas has called for more attacks during Ramadan, urging confrontations with Israeli forces in the West Bank, Jerusalem and inside Israel.

ISRAELI AUTHORITIES ARE INVESTIGATING A DEADLY STABBING AT A BUSY TRANSIT HUB IN HAIFA… LEAVING ONE MAN DEAD, AND FOUR OTHERS WOUNDED BEFORE A SECURITY GUARD AND A CIVILIAN SHOT AND KILLED THE ATTACKER.

POLICE IDENTIFIED THE ASSAILANT AS A 20-YEAR-OLD DRUZE CITIZEN OF ISRAEL WHO RECENTLY RETURNED FROM ABROAD. OFFICIALS SAY HE BOARDED A BUS, STABBED PASSENGERS, AND THEN CONTINUED ATTACKING PEOPLE OUTSIDE BEFORE HE WAS FATALLY SHOT.

THE VICTIMS INCLUDE A 70-YEAR-OLD MAN WHO DIED AT THE SCENE, A WOMAN IN HER 70S, A TEENAGE BOY, AND TWO ADULTS IN THEIR 30S. ONE OF THE WOUNDED REMAINS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER EMERGENCY SURGERY.

AUTHORITIES ARE TREATING THE ATTACK AS A MILITANT ACT. HAMAS PRAISED THE STABBING BUT DID NOT CLAIM RESPONSIBILITY. THE ATTACK COMES AS TENSIONS RISE, WITH ISRAEL CONTINUING MILITARY OPERATIONS IN GAZA AS CEASEFIRE TALKS STALLED.

IN CAIRO, ARAB FOREIGN MINISTERS MET TO DISCUSS AN EGYPTIAN PLAN FOR REBUILDING GAZA. THE PROPOSAL, EXPECTED TO BE ENDORSED AT AN UPCOMING SUMMIT, CALLS FOR TEMPORARY ZONES FOR DISPLACED RESIDENTS AND AN INTERIM PALESTINIAN ADMINISTRATION—ONE UNAFFILIATED WITH HAMAS OR THE PALESTINIAN AUTHORITY.

THIS CONTRASTS WITH A SEPARATE PROPOSAL, REPORTEDLY BACKED BY PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, THAT WOULD RELOCATE PALESTINIANS OUTSIDE OF GAZA.

PRIME MINISTER BENJAMIN NETANYAHU, WHO WAS TESTIFYING IN HIS CORRUPTION TRIAL WHEN THE HAIFA ATTACK HAPPENED, STEPPED OUT OF COURT TO OFFER CONDOLENCES TO THE VICTIM’S FAMILY AND WISH A SPEEDY RECOVERY TO THE WOUNDED. HE VOWED TO CONTINUE FIGHTING THOSE WHO SEEK TO HARM ISRAELIS.

HAMAS CALLED FOR MORE ATTACKS DURING RAMADAN, URGING CONFRONTATIONS WITH ISRAELI FORCES IN THE WEST BANK, JERUSALEM, AND INSIDE ISRAEL.
