White House offers cybersecurity tips amid Russian cyberattack threats

Full story

As the war between Russia and Ukraine escalates, there’s growing concern the conflict could enter a new front aimed at American computer systems. While Russia could be aiming to hit American government departments and critical infrastructure, experts said the growing threat may create a domino effect that could impact average Americans.

Here are three steps consumers can take to beef up their cyber security:

  • Think before clicking, staying on high alert for suspicious emails, robocalls or fraudulent links.
  • Use strong passwords, and consider changing and using a secure manager to store every password.
  • Update software, making sure the software for operating systems, browsers and apps are all up to date.

Experts also recommend backing up important files to an external drive or having them automatically backed up with a cloud-based service.
