Zelenskyy makes surprise visit to UK, vows ‘freedom will win’

Full story

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is visiting Britain Wednesday, with a similar agenda as when he visited America in December. Zelenskyy is thanking the Western alliance for their support as the country nears one year of war with Russia.

“We’ve had a good chat already. We’ve got lots to discuss over the course of this day about how we can continue to support Ukraine in a struggle against Russia. We want to stand by you throughout this conflict and ensure that you’re victorious,” said the new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Zelenskyy’s visit to Britain marks only a handful of times the president has left Ukraine since its region broke out as a battlefield. The president met Wednesday with Sunak as well as with Parliament.

The U.K.’s armed forces are working directly with Ukrainian troops to boost its military. While the U.S. is by far Ukraine’s biggest financial supporter throughout the war, the U.K. is its second greatest ally against Russia.

Feb. 24, 2023, marks the one-year anniversary of the war. There is currently no end in sight, but Zelenskyy is vowing to be victorious.

“I can see in your eyes now, we think the same way as you do. We know freedom will win,” Zelenskyy said.
