EEOC seeks to drop a gender discrimination case, signaling a big shift in civil rights enforcement

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has moved to dismiss a gender discrimination case against Harmony Hospitality, claiming it conflicts with President Donald Trump’s executive order on gender identity. The EEOC alleges that Harmony Hospitality terminated an employee for his sexual orientation and gender identity, violating Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Former EEOC General Counsel David Lopez criticized this decision as discriminatory, indicating a failure to protect workers’ rights. Democratic EEOC Commissioner Jocelyn Samuels stated that the decision illustrates the significant damage caused by the president’s executive order.
