Italy will finalize plan to return to nuclear power by 2027

Italy plans to finalize legislation to return to nuclear power by the end of 2027, as stated by Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin in an interview. Nuclear reactors were banned in Italy after referendums in 1987 and 2011, but the current government aims to lift this ban using new technologies.
The energy minister also mentioned that small modular reactors could help decarbonize industries like steel and glass, complementing renewable energy sources. Italy estimates saving 17 billion euros by 2050 if nuclear power constitutes at least 11% of its energy mix, according to the Italian National Energy and Climate Plan.
