National Park Service withdraws Black community in Louisiana from historic landmark consideration

The National Park Service withdrew the Great River Road from consideration for National Historic Landmark designation at the request of state officials. Those officials celebrated the move as a win for economic development.

Community groups criticized the decision, arguing it undermines efforts to preserve cultural legacies in Louisiana’s Black communities.

Aurelia S. Giacometto indicated the decision allows for local control over development without federal interference.

Joy Banner noted there are better ways to improve the economy than by focusing on industrialization in historically significant areas.
