Special counsel Jack Smith’s federal Trump cases cost over $50 million, records show

Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into Donald Trump have cost U.S. Taxpayers more than $50 million according to Department of Justice expenditure reports. From mid-November 2022 to March 31, 2023, Smith’s office incurred costs of about $9.25 million.

Financial disclosures show that from Oct. 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, Smith’s office spent roughly $11.84 million, and costs are likely higher including additional expenditures.

Smith was appointed by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland in 2022 to investigate allegations of election interference and alleged mishandling of classified files by Trump.
