Tribes, Native American students file lawsuit over Bureau of Indian Education firings

Three tribal nations and five Native American students filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for failing its legal obligations when it cut jobs at Bureau of Indian Education schools. The lawsuit states that security and maintenance firings have made the campus unsafe, causing unresolved issues like power outages.

Haskell Indian Nations University lost over a quarter of its staff, including key positions like the Dean of Students and the only bus driver.

Hershel Gorham, the lieutenant governor of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, emphasized that meaningful consultation is required before actions that could harm the tribes are taken.
