Since his return to the White House less than three weeks ago, President Donald Trump has enacted a series of executive orders and actions that have drawn both criticism and support. Legal and policy experts have raised concerns, with some arguing that these measures are illegal, unconstitutional, and a threat to U.S. national security. Some experts have even suggested that the actions amount to “a suspension of the Constitution,” while Democratic lawmakers have referred to them as a “coup.” However, supporters of President Trump argue that these moves are aimed at reducing the size of the federal government’s budget and have dismissed concerns of a constitutional crisis as overblown.

Watch the above video as Straight Arrow News contributor Adrienne Lawrence reviews some of President Trump’s most controversial recent actions, warns that those actions can quickly lead to an authoritarian state and encourages all Americans to resist.

The following is an excerpt from the above video:

What happens when a government loses legitimacy in the eyes of its people? We’ve seen it before in authoritarian regimes where laws are bent for political gain and where court rulings are ignored, where leaders treat the legal system as a weapon rather than a check on power. The United States has long prided itself on being different, but for how much longer?

The rule of law isn’t just an abstract concept, it’s what allows businesses to plan, communities to function, and people to have faith in their government in terms of it operating fairly. When Trump disregards legal norms, it isn’t just a political game. It has real world consequences. Companies hesitate to invest in an unpredictable environment. Local governments will struggle to deliver services amid bureaucratic whiplash. Ordinary Americans are left wondering if the rights they take for granted today will still exist tomorrow.

We are at an inflection point. Will we allow one man to upend the legal foundation of our democracy, or will we demand that our leaders uphold the laws that have governed this country for centuries?

You know, I don’t have an answer. We’re gonna have to wait and see. But there is one thing I can tell you, because it’s clear if Trump continues to treat the rule of law with contempt, America will suffer by way of the dismantling of its democracy. So why wait for the courts to hold him accountable? It’s not too late for accountability to come from us.

Chaos, confusion, constitutional malpractice. This is what President Trump has unleashed with a flurry of reckless executive orders that are not only legally dubious but fundamentally destabilizing to the country. Since his return to Office, Donald Trump has issued a series of sweeping decrees, many of which are so poorly drafted, vague and legally indefensible that they are already being shut down by the courts and with the quickness, his attempts to single handedly rewrite immigration law, freeze trillions in federal funding and purge government agencies of career officials aren’t just the actions of a leader testing the limits of executive power. They are the reckless maneuvers of someone who views the rule of law as an inconvenience rather than the foundation of American democracy, and the result instability that threatens not just policy but public faith in our legal system. Take Trump’s recent attempt to end birthright citizenship, an executive order so flagrantly unconstitutional that a federal judge swiftly blocked it. The 14th amendment has guaranteed birthright citizenship for over 150 years, yet Trump’s order disregarded this bedrock principle, forcing courts to step in. The judge in the case, a Reagan appointee, mind you, called the order blatantly unconstitutional and wondered aloud, where were the lawyers when this decision was being made? That question looms large over this administration and its actions. This isn’t an isolated case. However, consider Trump’s decision to freeze all federal grants and loans with a vague and sweeping directive. Within hours, state governments, universities and nonprofit organizations were scrambling to figure out if funding for essential services, disaster relief, housing aid, public health initiatives and so on was suddenly in limbo. The White House had to backpedal within days, admitting that the order was too broad, but the damage it was already done, markets wavered, local governments hesitated, and millions of Americans were left wondering whether critical services were about to vanish. And then what there is that blatant attack on career civil servants, the professionals who keep the government running regardless of who is in office, Trump has moved aggressively to purge agencies of nonpartisan legal experts and policy professionals, replacing them with political loyalists. This echoes his first administration’s attempts to reclassify 1000s of federal employees to make them easier to fire, a move that was widely condemned as an effort to politicize the civil service. So why does this all matter? Well, because these career officials are the ones who ensure that the government follows the law when they’re sidelined in favor of partisan enforcers. We inch closer to a system where legal expertise is replaced with political obedience. That’s not just bad governance. It’s a recipe for corruption and authoritarianism. This kind of Leadership isn’t just irresponsible, it erodes trust, and trust in our legal system is already at a crisis point. Gallup polls show confidence in the US Supreme Court is at historic lows, with over 60% of Americans believing justices rule based on politics rather than law. When the President disregards legal norms and issues orders destined to be struck down by the courts, he deepens public cynicism. Why should ordinary Americans respect the law when their own government treats it as a joke. Trump’s first administration had the worst track record before the Supreme Court of any modern presidency, losing more than 75% of its cases involving agency disputes. But rather than learning from those failures, while Trump and his allies, they’ve doubled down attempting to install political loyalists in key legal positions to bend the system to His will. So why wait for the courts to hold him accountable? It’s not too late for accountability to come from us.
