  • The Taliban is granting influencers broadcasting licenses to reshape Afghanistan’s image, but critical content is being removed from platforms like YouTube. This shift is part of a broader effort to promote tourism.
  • Content creators are depicting a different side of Afghanistan, with some videos highlighting restrictive environments, especially for women.
  • Despite strict media controls and human rights violations, the Taliban is trying to manage the narrative by reopening tourist sites and encouraging positive content.

Full Story

A growing number of YouTubers are traveling to Afghanistan to document their experiences under Taliban rule. Their videos, which showcase daily life, local culture and interactions with Taliban officials, are racking up hundreds of thousands of views.

Taliban grants influencers broadcasting licenses

The Taliban is now issuing broadcasting licenses to social media influencers, according to The Washington Post. These licenses put content creators on the same level as TV networks and radio stations. However, the licenses can be revoked if influencers violate Taliban rules.

At the same time, videos critical of the Taliban are reportedly being removed from YouTube. Ten content creators told The Post that YouTube had taken down their videos criticizing the Taliban.

According to Business Insider, the Taliban is actively promoting tourism through state-run media outlets. These efforts are part of a broader campaign to reshape Afghanistan’s image on the global stage.

YouTubers showcase “the other side” of Afghanistan

One YouTuber, known for traveling to lesser-known destinations, described his trip as a way to show “the other side” of Afghanistan. His videos highlight interactions with local men and explore how life has changed under Taliban rule.

In one clip, he jokes about the overwhelming male presence in public spaces.

His content also acknowledges the restrictions on women. In a video titled “Afghanistan has too much testosterone,” he discusses the challenges women face.

“When you see these young girls that are allowed to be girls, and then they come to a certain age, and just like that, everything is taken away from them.”

Afghan content creators join the conversation

Afghan-based influencers are also shaping the country’s online presence. Their videos feature interviews with Taliban officials, urban development projects, and entertainment content. The goal, according to The Washington Post, is to shift international perceptions of Afghanistan.

The Taliban has dramatically changed the country’s approach to media in recent decades. In the 1990s, the Taliban banned TV stations and gave citizens 15 days to dispose of their TVs or risk having them destroyed, according to a 1998 New York Times report.

The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs lists Afghanistan as a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” country. It warns of civil unrest, crime, terrorism, risk of wrongful detention, kidnapping, and limited health facilities.

Life in Afghanistan under Taliban rule

Since regaining power in August 2021, the Taliban has imposed strict policies, particularly on women and the media.

  • Education restrictions: According to UNESCO, the Taliban has banned 1.4 million girls from attending school beyond sixth grade.
  • Employment bans: Women are prohibited from working in most government and private-sector jobs.
  • Media suppression: A United Nations report from November 2023 documented 336 human rights violations against journalists and media workers, including arbitrary arrests, torture and restrictions on press freedom.

A new image or a controlled narrative?

At the same time, the Taliban has reopened tourist sites and is actively working with content creators to shift Afghanistan’s image.

As more influencers visit the country, the question remains—are they revealing an unseen side of Afghanistan, or are they part of a carefully managed PR strategy?

“I just spent the last seven days in Afghanistan.”

Videos like these are racking up millions of views as more content creators travel to Afghanistan – a country still under Taliban control. And whether or not they’re going by choice, one thing is clear – they’re being welcomed with open arms.

According to the Washington Post, the Taliban is now granting influencers broadcasting licenses – putting them on par with TV networks and radio stations. But there’s a catch – those licenses could be revoked if content creators break the rules on what can and cannot be said or done. At the same time, videos critical of the Taliban are reportedly being removed from YouTube, according to ten content creators interviewed by the Post. So why is the Taliban embracing this now? As Business Insider reports, Afghanistan’s state-run media is actively promoting tourism online – part of a broader effort to reshape the country’s image.

One notable content creator, who’s traveled worldwide documenting lesser-known destinations, visited Afghanistan to depict what he calls “the other side” of the country. One of his videos focuses on interactions with local men…

“That’s right. 24/7. All dudes. Bro’ing the f*ck down.”

… but he also attempts to challenge western media narratives about Afghanistan. In the video titled “Afghanistan Has Too Much Testosterone,” he acknowledges the restrictive environment – particularly for women.

“When you see these young girls that like are allowed to be girls and then like they come to a certain age and just like everything is taken away from them.”

As the Post also reports, other local content creators are also shaping this new online presence – featuring interviews with Taliban officials, urban development projects, and even environment content.

But this relationship with the media wasn’t always this open. In the 1990s, the country strictly controlled information – banning TV stations and even giving citizens just 15 days to get rid of their TV sets at one point or risk having them destroyed.

So – what’s life in Afghanistan like right now? The U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs lists Afghanistan as a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” country. It warns of civil unrest, crime, terrorism, risk of wrongful detention, kidnapping, and limited health facilities. Since regaining power in August 2021, the Taliban has imposed strict policies – especially on women and media. Women and girls have been banned from attending high school and university. Women are also largely prohibited from working in government and many private industries.

According to a United Nations report last November, widespread restrictions on media freedom in the country were revealed. Journalists and media workers reportedly faced 336 human rights violations between August 2021 and September 2024 – including arbitrary arrests, torture, and severe restrictions.

But at the same time, they’ve reopened tourist sites and are actively working in hopes of shaping a new narrative for Afghanistan. The version you see online might depend on who’s behind the camera, but the question remains – are these content creators revealing an unseen side of the country, or are they part of a carefully managed narrative?

Yankees react to latest injury, ace pitcher Gerrit Cole will miss 2025 season

  • The New York Yankees are reeling after their latest spring training injury. Ace pitcher Gerrit Cole will miss the 2025 season.
  • Cole has an injured throwing elbow that requires “Tommy John” surgery. He sought a second opinion in Los Angeles on Monday.
  • Other star players like pitcher Luis Gil, slugger Giancarlo Stanton and third baseman DJ LeMahieu are also out for an extended time.

Full Story

The New York Yankees spring went from bad to worse with the news that ace and former Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole is out for the season due to an elbow injury requiring “Tommy John” surgery. Cole was expected to be the Yankee’s Opening Day starter.

Cole reported discomfort in his throwing elbow after allowing six runs to the Minnesota Twins during spring training starting Thursday, March 6, prompting doctors to get imaging done. He sought a second opinion from a doctor in Los Angeles on Monday, March 10, that confirmed the worst. Cole posted a message to the fans on Instagram that read in part:

“This isn’t the news any athlete wants to hear, but it’s the necessary next step for my career. I have a lot left to give, and I’m fully committed to the work ahead. I’ll attack my rehab every day and support the 2025 Yankees each step of the way. I love this game, I love competing, and I can’t wait to be back on the mound—stronger than ever. See you soon,” Cole said.

How are the Yankees reacting to Cole’s news?

Cole’s teammates believe he’ll still contribute to the team with his knowledge and competitive spirit.

“We all know how talented Gerrit is and how much of an ace he is in this league. There’s not a lot of Gerrit Cole-type pitchers in MLB. So, he’ll be very missed; I just wish him the best,” fellow starter Clarke Schmidt said.

Cole had elbow inflammation early in spring training last season. With rest and rehab, he was able to come back and become a major contributor to the Yankees World Series run. That said, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman feared the worst this time around.

“Again, y’know, pitching is very difficult to maintain health, and you’re always one pitch away. So, y’know, the longer you get away from somebody’s episode, with success and no complaints, the less you think about it,” Cashman said.

What does Cole’s absence mean for the rotation?

Cashman is now thinking about the huge hole that Cole’s absence leaves in the starting rotation. The six-time All-Star is on a Hall of Fame path and other than the last two seasons has been durable, throwing the second most innings in the majors since 2017.

With rookie of the year Luis Gil also missing at least three months with a strained muscle in his back, the Yankees Opening Day rotation will be led by the newly acquired Max Fried. Following Fried will likely be Carlos Rodon and Schmidt. After that, there are questions about who will pitch and how long.

How much more bad news can the team take?

Another issue adding to the Yankee’s tough spring is a slew of problems on the offensive side. Slugger Giancarlo Stanton is dealing with a sore elbow and likely won’t play until at least June. Third baseman DJ LeMahieu also missed the entire spring with a calf injury and is not expected back until mid-April.

With more than two weeks to go before opening day, Cashman admits they’ll likely have to wait a while before they find a trade partner willing to send them the help they need.

The New York Yankees spring went from bad to worse with the news that ace and former Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole is lost for the season due to an injury requiring Tommy John surgery. Now there are real questions as to whether they can defend their American League title – even if the team won’t admit that.

Cole reported discomfort in his throwing elbow after allowing six runs to the Minnesota Twins during spring training start Thursday prompting doctors to get imaging done. He sought a second opinion from a doctor in Los Angeles over the weekend that confirmed the worst. He will miss the entire 2025 season.

Not that their spring record matters much but the Yankees are 8-9 at this point in the Grapefruit League with a little more than two weeks to go before Opening Day. They’ll likely have to wait a while before they find a trade partner willing to send them the help they need.

“Today, we made an offer that the Ukrainians have accepted, which is to enter into a ceasefire and into immediate negotiations to end this conflict in a way that’s enduring and sustainable and accounts for their interests and their security, their ability to prosper as a nation,” Secretary Rubio told reporters while standing next to National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.

Rubio stated the offer would now be presented to the Russians. White House Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin later this week.

“And we hope that they’ll say ‘yes,’” Rubio said. “That they’ll say ‘yes’ to peace. The ball is now in their court. And again, the president’s objective here is number one, above everything else, he wants the war to end, and I think today, Ukraine has taken a concrete step in that regard. We hope the Russians will reciprocate.”

What does the ceasefire entail?

The ceasefire will last 30 days, and the United States will lift a pause on military support for Ukraine, according to a State Department statement.

In a post on X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that his country had agreed to a “30-day full interim ceasefire, not only stopping missile, drone, and bomb attacks, not only in the Black Sea, but also along the entire front line.”

Zelenskyy added that Ukraine had been seeking peace from the “very first second” of the war. He said he hopes to achieve that as soon as possible.

“The American side understands our arguments and considers our proposals. I am grateful to President Trump for the constructive conversation between our teams,” Zelenskyy wrote.

President Trump also announced that he would invite Zelenskyy back to the White House less than two weeks after their tense exchange in the Oval Office.

  • A Wisconsin school district settled a lawsuit with former teacher Jordan Cernek for $20,000. The settlement comes after his contract was not renewed when he refused to refer to students using their preferred names or pronouns, citing his religious beliefs.
  • Cernek’s lawsuit, filed in May 2023, argued that the school violated his First Amendment rights to free speech and religion, as well as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination.
  • The settlement follows a similar case in Virginia. The West Point Public School Board agreed to pay a former teacher $575,000 in 2024. The teacher was fired for not using a transgender student’s preferred pronouns.

A Wisconsin school district settled a lawsuit with a former teacher for $20,000. His contract was not renewed when he refused to refer to students using their preferred names or pronouns, citing his religion.

“It was told to us at a staff meeting there that we had to address students by their preferred names and their preferred pronouns because of Title IX and gender identity,” Cernek said. “A push that was coming from the federal government, I think, at that point.”

What’s the background of the lawsuit?

Cernek’s attorneys said he informed the Argyle School District in southern Wisconsin of his religious objection to the new policy. He agreed not to use any names when referring to students. The school warned him that failure to use preferred names or pronouns would result in disciplinary action.

Six months later, the school district did not renew Cernek’s contract.

What laws did the school system allegedly break?

Jordan Cernek filed a lawsuit against the Argyle School District in May 2023 after the school let him go, according to his law firm, the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL). The lawsuit argued that the school violated his First Amendment rights to free speech and religion. The group also claimed the school violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination.

The superintendent confirmed to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the district’s insurance company decided to settle with Cernek for $20,000.

A similar case in Virginia resulted in the West Point Public School Board agreeing to pay a former teacher $575,000. The teacher sued the school after they were fired for not using a transgender student’s preferred pronouns.

A WISCONSIN SCHOOL DISTRICT SETTLED A LAWSUIT WITH A FORMER TEACHER FOR $20,000 DOLLARS AFTER THE TEACHER’S CONTRACT WAS NOT RENEWED WHEN HE REFUSED TO REFER TO STUDENTS’ USING THEIR PREFERRED NAMES OR PRONOUNS, CITING HIS RELIGION.

“IT WAS TOLD TO US AT A STAFF MEETING THERE THAT WE HAD TO ADDRESS STUDENTS BY THEIR PREFERRED NAMES AND THEIR PREFERRED PRONOUNS BECAUSE OF TITLE IX AND GENDER IDENTITY,” CERNEK SAID. “A PUSH THAT WAS COMING FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT I THINK AT THAT POINT.”

CERNEK’S ATTORNEYS SAY HE TOLD THE ARGYLE SCHOOL DISTRICT IN SOUTHERN WISCONSIN ABOUT HIS RELIGIOUS OBJECTION TO THE NEW POLICY AND AGREED NOT TO USE ANY NAMES WHEN REFERRING TO STUDENTS. THE SCHOOL WARNED HIM – NOT USING PREFERRED NAMES OR PRONOUNS WOULD RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY ACTION.

SIX MONTHS LATER, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT DID NOT RENEW CERNEK’S CONTRACT.

JORDAN CERNEK FILED A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE ARGYLE SCHOOL DISTRICT IN MAY 2023 AFTER THE SCHOOL LET HIM GO, ACCORDING TO HIS LAW FIRM, THE WISCONSIN INSTITUTE FOR LAW & LIBERTY (WILL) – ARGUING THE SCHOOL VIOLATED HIS FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS TO FREE SPEECH AND RELIGION, AS WELL AS AND TITLE XII (7) OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT OF 1964 – WHICH PROHIBITS EMPLOYMENT DISCRIMINATION.

THE SUPERINTENDENT CONFIRMED TO THE MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL THAT THE DISTRICT’S INSURANCE COMPANY DECIDED TO SETTLE WITH CERNEK FOR $20-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

A SIMILAR CASE IN VIRGINIA RESULTED IN THE WEST POINT PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD AGREEING TO PAY A FORMER TEACHER $575-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN 2024 – AFTER THE TEACHER WAS FIRED FOR NOT USING A TRANSGENDER STUDENT’S PREFERRED PRONOUNS.

NTSB issues urgent safety recommendations

The National Transportation Safety Board released a set of safety recommendations on Tuesday, March 11. The recommendations called for a ban on helicopters flying near Reagan National Airport. The report focuses on planes flying over the Potomac River, preparing to land or take off from runways 15 and 33.

“We continue to mourn the lives lost in the tragic accident involving Flight 5342. We’re grateful for the National Transportation Safety Board’s urgent safety recommendations to restrict helicopter traffic near DCA and for its thorough investigation.”

American Airlines

As part of the recommendations, all helicopter traffic will pause when planes are near, a significant shift from the previous policy. Before the NTSB’s recommendations, helicopters could fly alongside landing planes, maintaining 75 feet of vertical separation.

Details of the collision

The NTSB’s investigation provides details of the midair collision between a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, reportedly on a training mission, and an American Airlines passenger jet. Investigators noted that warning signs were present. The investigation cites over 15,000 near-miss events between 2021 and 2024 where aircraft came within one nautical mile of colliding.

Data suggests pilots may have missed important radio transmissions from the control tower. According to the report, the helicopter crew likely didn’t hear calls, including one alerting them to the jet circling the area.

The NTSB determined the Black Hawk helicopter was flying at an altitude of around 325 feet when it should have been limited to 200 feet. Conversations from the crew before the crash revealed cockpit data was inaccurate and failed to alert them about their altitude, potentially contributing to the collision.

Transportation Secretary responds to report

In response to the safety concerns raised by the NTSB, the federal government is developing alternative routes around restricted airspace for law enforcement, presidential travel and military flights. These changes aim to further reduce the risk of similar incidents.

The report did not definitively determine the exact cause of the January collision. It offered preliminary findings and a probable cause, and the investigation remains ongoing.

A FEDERAL AGENCY IS WORKING TO IMPROVE AIRSPACE SAFETY FOLLOWING A DEADLY MIDAIR COLLISION OVER WASHINGTON, D.C.

IN JANUARY, 67 PEOPLE DIED WHEN AN AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT AND A BLACKHAWK HELICOPTER COLLIDED MIDAIR, BECOMING THE DEADLIEST AVIATION DISASTER SINCE 2001.

THE NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD RELEASED URGENT SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS TUESDAY, CALLING FOR A BAN ON HELICOPTERS NEAR REAGAN NATIONAL AIRPORT.

AMERICAN AIRLINES EXPRESSED GRATITUDE FOR THE REPORT AND THE URGENCY IN RESTRICTING FLIGHT SCHEDULES.

THE REPORT FOCUSES ON PLANES FLYING OVER FOUR MILES OF THE POTOMAC RIVER, PREPARING TO LAND OR TAKE OFF FROM RUNWAYS 15 AND 33.

WITHIN HOURS OF THE NTSB’S REPORT, TRANSPORTATION SECRETARY SEAN DUFFY SAID THE FAA WILL IMPLEMENT FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS MOVING FORWARD.

THIS MEANS ALL HELICOPTER TRAFFIC WILL PAUSE WHEN PLANES ARE NEAR. BEFORE THE RECOMMENDATIONS, HELICOPTERS COULD FLY ALONGSIDE LANDING PLANES, WITH ONLY 75 FEET VERTICAL DISTANCE BETWEEN THEM.

A REPORT DETAILS WHAT HAPPENED WHEN A U.S. ARMY HELICOPTER, REPORTEDLY ON A TRAINING MISSION, STRUCK A PASSENGER JET JUST BEFORE LANDING.

INVESTIGATORS SAY WARNING SIGNS WERE CLEAR, CITING OVER 15,000 NEAR-MISS EVENTS BETWEEN 2021 AND 2024 WHERE AIRCRAFT CAME WITHIN ONE NAUTICAL MILE OF COLLIDING.

DATA SUGGESTS PILOTS MAY HAVE MISSED RADIO TRANSMISSIONS FROM THE CONTROL TOWER.

THE REPORT STATES THE ARMY HELICOPTER CREW PROBABLY DIDN’T HEAR IMPORTANT CALLS, INCLUDING ONE THAT ALERTED THEM THE JET WAS CIRCLING.

NTSB SAYS THE BLACK HAWK WAS SUPPOSED TO FLY AT A 200-FOOT ALTITUDE LIMIT, BUT WAS LIKELY AROUND 325 FEET AT IMPACT.

CONVERSATIONS FROM THE CREW BEFORE THE CRASH REVEALED THE COCKPIT DATA WAS INACCURATE AND DIDN’T ALERT THEM TO THEIR  ALTITUDE.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS WORKING ON CREATING ALTERNATIVE ROUTES AROUND RESTRICTED AIRSPACE FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT, PRESIDENTIAL TRAVEL, AND MILITARY FLIGHTS.

THE REPORT DIDN’T DETERMINE THE EXACT CAUSE OF JANUARY’S COLLISION, OFFERING ONLY PRELIMINARY FINDINGS AND PROBABLE CAUSE.

Portnoy’s potential role in the Commerce Department

On Tuesday’s episode of “Davey Day Trader Global,” Portnoy revealed that he was contacted a few months ago about a possible government position. The Department of Commerce focuses on economic growth and job creation, making the offer a surprising pivot for the sports and pop culture entrepreneur.

Portnoy recalled the conversation, saying, “It was like, ‘Hey, would you have any interest in joining the Department of Commerce under [Sec. Howard] Lutnick?’”

While the opportunity was unexpected, it came with a major stipulation—he would have had to step down from running Barstool Sports. The company started as a free newspaper in Boston and has since grown into a multimillion-dollar digital media empire.

Portnoy’s political stance and past controversies

Portnoy has been a vocal supporter of President Trump, endorsing his presidential run. However, his career has also been marked by controversy.

In 2021, multiple women accused Portnoy of sexual misconduct—allegations he denied. Additionally, past videos have surfaced showing him using racially insensitive language, including a slur for Black people.

Comparing his situation to Elon Musk

While discussing the potential government role, Portnoy questioned how high-profile business leaders like Elon Musk manage multiple companies. In a video posted to his X account, he pondered whether a similar setup could have worked for him.

“I mean, I guess Elon doesn’t have a specific title…” Portnoy remarked during the podcast.

However, he ultimately says the Trump administration never followed up. He was told he would receive a call within a week if he could find someone to take over Barstool Sports—but that call never came.

“It was weird,” he said.

From reviewing pizza to almost shaping economic policy?

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy says he was offered a role in Washington D.C. by the Trump administration – but it came with one big catch. So why didn’t the self-proclaimed “El Presidente” take his talents from the internet to the inner workings of the government?

“It was like, ‘Hey, would you have any interest, Dave, in joining the Department of Commerce under Lutnick?’”

On Tuesday’s episode of his podcast “Davey Day Trader Global,” Portnoy shared that he was contacted a few months ago about a position in the U.S. Department of Commerce – which oversees economic growth and job creation. But there was a major condition – he would have to step away from Barstool Sports, the digital media company he founded in 2003 as a free newspaper in Boston. Over the years, Barstool has grown into a multimillion-dollar media powerhouse known for sports, pop culture, and entertainment content.

Portnoy has been a vocal supporter of President Trump, even endorsing his run for presidency last year. However, he’s also been a controversial figure – facing scrutiny over past comments and actions. In 2021, he was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women, allegations he denied. He also faces criticism for old videos showing him using inflammatory language, including a racist slur for Black people.

But the new job offer left Portnoy with a question. In the video clip posted to his X account, he attempted to reason how Elon Musk was able to run Doge 24-7 and Tesla.

“I mean, I guess Elon doesn’t have a specific title…”

But in the end, the decision wasn’t his to make. Portnoy says the administration never followed up after telling him they’d call within a week if he could find someone to run Barstool in his place.

“The Department is deeply disappointed that Jewish students studying on elite U.S. campuses continue to fear for their safety amid the relentless antisemitic eruptions that have severely disrupted campus life for more than a year. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits any institution that receives federal funds from discriminating based on race, color and national origin, which includes Jewish ancestry.

According to the department, protecting Jewish students includes uninterrupted access to campus facilities and educational opportunities.

“U.S. colleges and universities benefit from enormous public investments funded by U.S. taxpayers. That support is a privilege and it is contingent on scrupulous adherence to federal antidiscrimination laws,” McMahon added.

President Trump signed an executive order on January 29 titled “Additional Measures to Combat Antisemitism.” To comply with the order, the department launched investigations into five universities. It expanded to 55 more after complaints were filed with the Office of Civil Rights.

Last week, the department canceled $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University due to alleged inaction to protect Jewish students from discrimination.

Beginning in April 2024, thousands of students at college campuses across the country protested Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Protestors demanded their colleges divest any endowment funds that may be invested in Israeli companies while calling for peace in the region. The protests escalated when students started occupying buildings and disrupting classes and libraries, which prevented students from attending class and studying for finals. That led to mass arrests.

New Yorkers may face higher energy bills to fund renewable power

  • New York’s largest utility provider, Con Edison, has proposed an 11.4% increase in electricity rates and a 13.3% increase in gas rates to support renewable energy investments. Many state residents oppose these hikes, with over 800 public comments submitted, citing concerns over already high power costs.
  • Government data shows nearly 1.4 million New York residents were already behind on their energy bills in December 2024, collectively owing nearly $2 billion.
  • After a regulatory review process typically lasting at least 11 months, a bipartisan board appointed by the governor will make a decision. If approved, the new rates would take effect in 2026.

Full Story

New Yorkers may experience an increase in their energy bills to support renewable power development. Utility company Con Edison, which serves more than nine million people in the state, submitted a rate hike request to the New York Department of Public Service in January.

How will the increases impact New Yorkers?

In a statement, Con Edison said the increase would “support clean energy investments needed to build and maintain the grid of the future.” Under the proposal, customers receiving power from the company would see an 11.4% increase in electricity rates and a 13.3% increase in gas rates.

Several New Yorkers have already voiced their opposition to the potential increases. The Public Service Department received more than 800 public comments on the matter, most of which expressed disapproval.

“Our ConEd bill has already spiked to over $500 for a one-bedroom apartment. Please do something about this and vote no more increases,” one resident wrote.

These rate hike talks come as many people in the state already face financial strain from utility bills. Government data from December 2024 shows that nearly 1.4 million residents were behind on their payments, with total overdue balances to energy companies nearing $2 billion.

Why is New York considering this?

The proposed rate adjustments align with New York’s transition to renewable energy under the state’s 2019 climate law. The law aims to phase out fossil fuels and increase electrification in buildings and transportation.

A 2022 state report estimated the transition could cost nearly $300 billion. However, projected health and economic benefits from reduced greenhouse gas emissions are valued at approximately $400 billion.

What happens next?

Con Edison’s proposal will undergo a regulatory review process, including public hearings and input from consumer advocacy groups, typically taking at least 11 months. A bipartisan board appointed by the governor will ultimately determine whether to approve the rate hikes or not.

Historically, final approved increases tend to be lower than initially requested, according to a Public Service Department spokesperson. In 2023, Con Edison’s requested rate hike was reduced by 60% during the review process. If the current proposal is approved, the new rates will take effect in 2026.

NEW YORKERS COULD SEE THEIR ENERGY BILLS RAISED IN AN EFFORT TO SUPPORT RENEWABLE POWER DEVELOPMENT.

CON EDISON, THE ENERGY COMPANY SERVING MORE THAN NINE MILLION PEOPLE IN THE STATE, REQUESTED THIS POTENTIAL RATE HIKE FROM THE NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SERVICE IN JANUARY.

THE UTILITY PROVIDER SAID IN A STATEMENT THE INCREASE WOULD QUOTE “SUPPORT CLEAN ENERGY INVESTMENTS NEEDED TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN THE GRID OF THE FUTURE.”

UNDER CON EDISON’S PROPOSAL, NEW YORKERS WHO GET THEIR POWER FROM THE COMPANY WOULD PAY 11.4 PERCENT MORE FOR ELECTRICITY AND 13.3 PERCENT MORE FOR GAS.

MANY NEW YORKERS VOICED THEIR FRUSTRATIONS OVER THE POSSIBLE INCREASE.

THE PUBLIC SERVICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVED OVER 800 PUBLIC COMMENTS ON THE MATTER, MOST OF THEM OPPOSING THE RATE INCREASES.

ONE NEW YORKER WROTE, “OUR CONED BILL HAS ALREADY SPIKED TO OVER $500 FOR A ONE-BEDROOM APARTMENT. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS AND VOTE NO MORE INCREASES.”

THIS OUTCRY TAKES PLACE AS MANY NEW YORKERS ALREADY STRUGGLE WITH THEIR UTILITY PAYMENTS.

GOVERNMENT DATA FOUND THAT IN DECEMBER, NEARLY 1.4 MILLION NEW YORKERS WERE BEHIND ON THEIR ENERGY BILLS-

TOTALING ALMOST 2 BILLION DOLLARS IN MONEY OWED TO ENERGY COMPANIES.

THESE RATE HIKES COME AS NEW YORK TRANSITIONS TO MORE RENEWABLES IN LINE WITH ITS 2019 CLIMATE LAW-

AIMING TO PHASE OUT FOSSIL FUELS, AS WELL AS ELECTRIFY MORE BUILDINGS AND TRANSPORTATION.

ACCORDING TO A 2022 STATE REPORT, THIS TRANSITION TO CLEANER ENERGY SOURCES COULD COST NEARLY 300 BILLION DOLLARS-

BUT ESTIMATES THE HEALTH AND ECONOMIC BENEFITS ASSOCIATED WITH LOWER GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS TO BE VALUED AT ABOUT 400 BILLION DOLLARS.

CON EDISON’S RECENTLY PROPOSED INCREASES WILL GO THROUGH A REGULATORY REVIEW PROCESS NEXT-

INCLUDING PUBLIC HEARINGS AND INPUT FROM CONSUMER GROUPS.

A BIPARTISAN BOARD APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR WILL THEN MAKE A FINAL DECISION, AND HISTORICALLY, APPROVED INCREASES TEND TO BE LOWER THAN INITIALLY REQUESTED-

ACCORDING TO A PUBLIC SERVICE DEPARTMENT SPOKESPERSON.

IN 2023, CON EDISON’S REQUESTED UTILITY PRICE HIKE WAS REDUCED BY 60 PERCENT.

IF APPROVED, THE NEW RATES WOULD TAKE EFFECT IN 2026.

Attempted shooting targets witness in former Oakland mayor’s corruption case

  • Authorities accused former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, along with associates, of leading a bribery scheme. Federal investigators claim Thao used her mayoral position to fund her personal lifestyle.
  • Police arrested two men for allegedly attempting to shoot a potential witness to Thao’s crimes; no charges have been filed.
  • Voters recalled Thao as mayor amid the ongoing investigation.

Full Story

The corruption case against former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has taken a turn after California authorities arrested two men for allegedly attempting to kill a possible witness to her alleged crimes. However, the Alameda County District Attorney’s office has not filed any charges regarding the incident.

Shooting incident raises questions

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the shooting occurred in June as federal authorities were preparing to search the homes of Thao and her alleged co-conspirators.

Mario Juarez was the alleged target, according to police. Authorities said the two suspected shooters shot at Juarez as the FBI closed in on the investigation.

Oakland police arrested the suspects. Police later released the two, and no charges were filed against them.

Local and federal officials have not confirmed whether the shooting is connected to the ongoing federal investigation into Thao. However, Juarez claims the attack occurred because he knows too much about the case. She also said she is aware of key details regarding Thao’s indictment.

Bribery allegations: ‘pay-to-play’ scheme

Court documents allege Thao was involved in a bribery scheme with David and Andy Duong. The alleged scheme resulted in $95,000 in payments from the Duong brothers. In exchange, Thao allegedly agreed to extend their recycling contract with the city and purchase housing from one of their other businesses.

Federal investigators revealed as soon as Tao became mayor in 2023, she allegedly used her position of power to fund her personal lifestyle.

Change in political landscape

In November, following the growing corruption investigation, the city of Oakland officially recalled Thao as mayor. Currently, Mayor Kevin Jenkins is serving as the interim mayor. Residents will vote on a permanent replacement on April 15.

Thao, along with Jones and the Duong brothers, pleaded not guilty to the bribery-related charges.

Only seven countries worldwide met WHO air quality standards last year

  • Only seven countries—Australia, New Zealand, the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Estonia, and Iceland—met the World Health Organization’s air quality standards in 2024. Chad and Bangladesh had the worst air quality, with pollution levels over 15 times higher than the WHO’s recommended limits.
  • India showed slight improvement but still had 12 of the world’s 20 most polluted cities. Only 17% of cities worldwide met the WHO’s air quality guidelines.
  • The closure of the U.S. embassy air quality monitoring program is expected to impact 34 countries. One expert called it a “giant blow to air quality efforts worldwide.”

Full Story

A report released this week found just seven countries met the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality standards in 2024. Swiss air quality monitoring firm IQAir compiled the data.

“IQAir today announced the release of its 7th annual World Air Quality Report, highlighting alarming trends of the world’s most polluted countries, territories, and regions in 2024,” the organization said in a statement. “For this year’s report, data from more than 40,000 air quality monitoring stations across 8,954 locations in 138 countries, territories, and regions were analyzed by IQAir’s air quality scientists.”

Which countries met the WHO’s standards?

Australia, New Zealand, the Bahamas, Barbados, Grenada, Estonia, and Iceland were the only nations to achieve WHO’s recommended air quality guidelines. Meanwhile, Chad and Bangladesh were ranked the most polluted countries in 2024, with smog levels over 15 times higher than the WHO’s standards.

The report also highlighted Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and India among the top five countries with the worst air quality. Though India did see slight improvements in its air quality rankings, the country still accounted for 12 of the 20 most polluted cities globally. In total, only 17% of cities worldwide could meet the WHO’s air quality guidelines.

How accurate is this report?

Experts, however, cited significant data gaps, particularly in regions like Asia and Africa, which complicate the global understanding of air pollution. Many developing countries in these areas have relied on air quality data from U.S. embassy and consulate monitoring stations. However, the U.S. State Department recently ended this program, citing budget constraints. As a result, official U.S. air quality sources no longer has over 17 years worth of data.

“Most countries have a few other data sources, but it’s going to impact Africa significantly because oftentimes, these are the only sources of publicly available real-time air quality monitoring data,” Christi Chester-Schroeder, IQAir’s air quality science manager, said.

What happens next?

Christa Hasenkopf, director of the Clean Air Program at the University of Chicago’s Energy Policy Institute, noted that at least 34 countries will lose access to reliable air quality data with the cessation of the U.S. monitoring program. Hasenkopf called this a “giant blow to air quality efforts worldwide.”

ACCORDING TO NEW DATA RELEASED BY THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, ONLY SEVEN COUNTRIES WORLDWIDE MET ITS AIR QUALITY STANDARDS LAST YEAR.

THE REPORT, COMPILED BY SWISS AIR QUALITY MONITORING FIRM IQAIR, FOUND ONLY AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND, THE BAHAMAS, BARBADOS, GRENADA, ESTONIA, AND ICELAND MET THE ORGANIZATION’S GUIDELINES.

MEANWHILE, CHAD AND BANGLADESH, WERE THE MOST POLLUTED COUNTRIES IN 2024-

WITH SMOG LEVELS OVER 15 TIMES HIGHER THAN THE STANDARD.

ROUNDING OUT THE TOP 5 NATIONS WITH THE WORLD’S WORST AIR QUALITY WERE PAKISTAN, THE DEMOCRACTIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO, AND INDIA.

INDIA ACTUALLY IMPROVED SLIGHTLY OVER LAST YEAR’S RANKINGS, BUT THE COUNTRY WAS STILL HOME TO 12 OF THE TOP 20 MOST POLLUTED CITIES GLOBALLY.

IN TOTAL, ONLY 17 PERCENT OF CITIES ON THE PLANET ACHIEVED THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION’S STANDARDS.

HOWEVER, THE REPORT’S AUTHORS SAID THE GLOBAL PICTURE OF AIR POLLUTION WAS CLOUDED BY SIGNIFICANT DATA GAPS-

ESPECIALLY IN REGIONS LIKE ASIA AND AFRICA.

MANY DEVELOPING COUNTRIES IN THESE AREAS HAD RELIED ON AIR QUALITY DATA FROM U.S. EMBASSY AND CONSULATE MONITORING STATIONS.

BUT, CITING BUDGET CONSTRAINTS, THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT RECENTLY DISCONTINUED THIS PROGRAM-

REMOVING OVER 17 YEARS OF DATA FROM OFFICIAL AIR QUALITY SOURCES.

THE DIRECTOR OF THE CLEAN AIR PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO’S ENERGY POLICY INSTITUTE-

NOTED THAT AT LEAST 34 COUNTRIES WILL LOSE ACCESS TO RELIABLE AIR QUALITY DATA FOLLOWING THE CLOSURE OF THE U.S. MONITORING PROGRAM.

WHICH EXPERTS HAVE CALLED A GIANT BLOW TO AIR QUALITY EFFORTS WORLDWIDE.
