What to know about the 2025 Super Bowl: Who, when, where, how to watch

The 2025 Super Bowl is just 12 days away and the event seems to grow every year. Many fans consider Super Bowl Sunday unofficial national holiday. According to the UGG’s Workforce Institute, between 15-20 million people call in sick for work the Monday after the big game. That’s almost 6% of Americans.

Who’s playing in this year’s Super Bowl?

This year’s matchup is familiar. The Kansas City Chiefs, with a 17 and 2 record, have been in the Super Bowl five of the last six years. They’ll take on the Philadelphia Eagles making their 4th appearance overall. They’ve won 17 games and lost just three.

This year’s game is also a rematch of the 2023 Super Bowl. The Chiefs won that game 38-35 on a field goal in the final seconds.

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid talked about what it will take to get his team ready over the next couple weeks.

“There’s no more important game than the one we’re going to play in and we need that joint effort. The other team we’re playing, the Eagles, they are there for a reason and it’s because they’re a good football team.” Reid said. “So we need to make sure we keep everything together and work and get a nice plan together for this group.”

Where is the game and what time is kickoff?

Kickoff is Sunday, Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The stadium has hosted seven previous Super Bowls, most recently in 2013.

Football and music fans might remember the 2013 game because the power went out at the stadium for more than 30 minutes during the third quarter, shortly after Beyoncé finished her halftime performance. It was also the first Super Bowl to feature two brothers, John and Jim Harbaugh, coaching against each other.

The city of New Orleans has hosted eight total Super Bowls and is tied with Miami for the most.

The NFL said there will be a heightened security presence this year after the deadly New Year’s Eve terrorist attack on Bourbon Street.

How can you watch the game?

This year the game is on FOX, but viewers can also stream it on the Fox Sports website and app, the NFL Plus app, Hulu, Fubo TV, YouTube TV and Sling.

Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady are the lead television broadcast crew. It’s Burkhardt’s second Super Bowl and Brady’s first.

Super Bowl television ratings seem to break records every season. Last year 123 million people watched the game on CBS, up 7% from the previous year. Millions more people watched on streaming services.

Who is performing before the game and at halftime?

The Super Bowl halftime show has become another big draw and this year, 17-time Grammy winner Kendrick Lamar will perform. He follows recent acts like Usher, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.

Golden Globe and Grammy winner John Batiste will sing the national anthem before the game.

What are the odds for this Super Bowl?

The Chiefs are currently 2-point favorites to win. The team won 17 straight games that have been decided by one possession, including the recent AFC Championship win over Buffalo.

According to the American Gaming Association, a record $23 billion was wagered on last year’s Super Bowl.

Was Dr. Phil’s ICE ride-along a spectacle or effective? Bias Breakdown

Listen
Share

President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration has begun, with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents making thousands of arrests in the first week of Trump’s second term. However, the media’s portrayal of ICE raids varies significantly depending on the political leanings of the outlets.

Media coverage over Dr. Phil’s ride-along with ICE

One recent example of contrasting media narratives involves Dr. Phil’s participation in a ride-along with ICE agents and “border czar” Tom Homan during an operation in Chicago, Illinois. The event has sparked polarized reactions across news outlets.

Some left-leaning media outlets criticized the ride-along, calling it a spectacle. CNN highlighted Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s comments, referring to Dr. Phil’s involvement as “ridiculous.”

Point phone camera here

Meanwhile, Fox News defended the operation. The network noted that it provided transparency into ICE’s efforts to target criminal migrants.

The Chicago Tribune, critical of Dr. Phil’s presence, wrote, “granting largely unrestricted access to a well-known television personality during high-stakes law enforcement encounters raises questions about the propriety of the operation. It also underscores the extent to which Trump … relies on spectacle and showmanship to convey his message.”

In contrast, a Breitbart report focused on Dr. Phil’s comments about the targeted nature of the ICE mission. The publication highlighted that the operation was aimed at known criminals and terrorists.

Breitbart wrote, “Dr. Phil also said that Tom Homan, border czar for President Trump, had clear objectives to detain criminals and shut down the United States border as opposed to the common misconception of sweeping neighborhoods and rounding random Hispanics up for deportation.”

Debate over media access and ICE ride-alongs

While the appropriateness of Dr. Phil’s involvement has sparked debate, it’s not unusual for federal agencies to grant media access to operations. Dr. Phil, known for his talk show and reality TV career, started his own news media company, Merit Street Media, last year.

Dr. Phil isn’t the first to be granted such access. Fox News reporter Bill Melugin was embedded with ICE agents during a bust in Boston just days before Dr. Phil’s ride-along. Recently confirmed Homeland Security Director Kristi Noem also joined ICE agents for a ride-along in New York City.

The Bigger Picture: ICE operations nationwide

Across the country, from Chicago to Boston and New York City, ICE agents are conducting hundreds of arrests each day. Media coverage of these operations varies widely based on the political leanings of the network. Left-leaning outlets like CNN and MSNBC focus on the fear and anxiety within migrant communities while right-leaning outlets like Fox News emphasize the removal of criminal migrants.

How do Americans feel about it?

Polling data suggests widespread concern about the country’s immigration system, with 88% of Americans supporting the deportation of migrants with criminal records. A majority of Americans (55%) also favor deporting all immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally.

Conclusion: Ongoing media debate over operations

As President Trump’s administration pushes forward with its immigration priorities, media debates over the ethics and effectiveness of ICE operations continue.

While controversies over ICE raids and deportations persist, operations are well underway. The debate between left and right-leaning media outlets on how these operations should be conducted — and what constitutes ethical enforcement — shows no signs of abating. As the administration focuses on immigration reform, the nation remains divided on addressing the issue.

WELCOME TO BIAS BREAKDOWN.

I’M YOUR HOST KARAH RUCKER.

CONFLICTING REPORTS OVER ICE OPERATIONS.

PRESIDENT TRUMP’S CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IS UNDERWAY WITH ICE AGENTS ALREADY ARRESTING THOUSANDS IN WEEK ONE.

BUT HOW THE MEDIA IS REPORTING ON ICE RAIDS LOOKS A LOT DIFFERENTLY BETWEEN OUTLETS WITH A LEFT AND RIGHT POLITICAL BIAS.

THAT INCLUDES THE MEDIA’S PERCEPTION OF A RECENT “ICE RIDE ALONG” WHICH INCLUDED DR. PHIL.

HOW ICE OPERATIONS ARE BEING REPORTED IS THE FOCUS OF TODAY’S BIAS BREAKDOWN.

FIRST –

WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT A RECENT ICE RAID DR. PHIL TOOK PART IN.

THEN – LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE OF HOW ICE RAIDS ARE LARGELY BEING SCRUTINIZED BY LEFT-LEANING OUTLETS AND PRAISED AS A SUCCESS BY RIGHT-LEANING OUTLETS.

“Are you a citizen? My mom is a citizen. You’re mom is a citizen, but you’re not? Nope. have you ever been deported before? You’re dr phil? Yeah how do you know me? I’ve seen dr phil, you know.”

“This is an example of sanctuary cities, youve got an illegal alien convicted of sex crimes with children walking the streets of chicago.”

  1. PHIL’S RIDE ALONG WITH ICE AGENTS AND BORDER CZAR TOM HOMAN IN CHICAGO PRODUCED TWO DIFFERENT MEDIA NARRATIVES.

SOME LEFT LEANING OUTLETS – PORTRAYING IT AS A SPECTACLE.

AND RIGHT LEANING OUTLETS – PORTRAYING IT AS EFFECTIVE.

TAKE THE CONTRAST IN HEADLINES BETWEEN CNN WITH A LEFT BIAS AND FOX WITH A RIGHT BIAS.

CNN – HIGHLIGHTING THE ILLINOIS ATTORNEY GENERAL’S COMMENTS CALLING DR. PHIL’S RIDE-ALONG “RIDICULOUS.”

AND FOX NEWS – CRITICIZING CNN PUNDITS AND LOCAL OFFICIALS FOR “ATTACKING” THE RIDE-ALONG AS A “MOCKERY”.

Do you know why dr phil is getting involved in all of this, getting all this access, what is going on?

I think its ridiculous, its making a mockery of what’s supposed to be a focused, focusing on criminals, you don’t invite folks like that to be embedded within.”

OTHER OUTLETS TOOK A SIMILAR APPROACH – QUESTIONING DR. PHIL’S PRESENCE ON SCENE.

THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE WROTE “granting largely unrestricted access to a well-known television personality during high-stakes law enforcement encounters raises questions about the propriety of the operation. It also underscores the extent to which Trump — who parlayed his turn as a reality TV star into a political career powered by harsh rhetoric on illegal immigration — relies on spectacle and showmanship to convey his message.”

BUT NEWS OUTLETS ON THE RIGHT REPORTED ON DR. PHIL’S RIDE ALONG AS A GLIMPSE OF TRANSPARENCY INTO HOW ICE OPERATIONS ARE SUCCESSFULLY ROOTING OUT MIGRANTS WHO HAVE COMMITTED CRIMES.

FOX NEWS WROTE Dr. Phil revealed on the show that he had to be briefed on extensive security protocols as part of the “high-risk mission.”

“This truly is a targeted ICE mission because they’re not sweeping neighborhoods like people are trying to imply,” he said. “I know that because I’ve been involved heading into this. They’ve identified 270 high-value targets, and what I mean by that is that these are known criminals and terrorists.”

BREITBART – ANOTHER NEWS OUTLET ON THE RIGHT – WROTE “Dr. Phil also said that Tom Homan, border czar for President Trump, had clear objectives to detain criminals and shut down the United States border as opposed to the common misconception of sweeping neighborhoods and rounding random Hispanics up for deportation.”

WHILE “DR. PHIL’S PRESENCE BEING SUITABLE DURING ONE OF ICE’S OPERATIONS” HAS BEEN OPENED TO DEBATE IN THE MEDIA –

IT ISN’T UNUSUAL FOR FEDERAL AGENCIES TO ACCEPT REQUESTS FROM **MEDIA TO DO “RIDE ALONGS” ON CERTAIN OPERATIONS.

AND WHILE DR. PHIL HAS A HISTORY OF REALITY TV AND TALK SHOWS –

HE STARTED HIS OWN NEWS MEDIA COMPANY “MERIT STREET MEDIA” LAST YEAR. PHIL HASN’T BEEN THE FIRST TO BE GRANTED THIS SORT OF ACCESS.

FOX NEWS REPORTER BILL MELUGIN WAS “EMBEDDED WITH ICE AGENTS” DURING A BUST IN BOSTON – SEVERAL DAYS PRIOR TO DR. PHIL’S RIDE ALONG IN CHICAGO.

AND KRISTI NOEM – PRESIDENT TRUMP’S HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY – WAS ALSO GRANTED ACCESS BY ICE FOR A RIDE ALONG DURING AN OPERATION IN NEW YORK CITY.

FROM CHICAGO TO BOSTON AND NEW YORK CITY –

ICE IS ON THE GROUND – CONDUCTING HUNDREDS OF ARRESTS A DAY.

AND TV COVERAGE OF ICE OPERATIONS IN A BROADER SCOPE RATHER THAN JUST THE ONE DR. PHIL SHADOWED –

WIDELY DIFFERS DEPENDING ON THE POLITICAL LEAN OF THE NETWORK.

LEFT-LEANING NEWS OUTLETS LIKE CNN AND MSNBC ARE REPORTING ON FEARS FROM WITHIN MIGRANT COMMUNITIES OVER ICE RAIDS.

WHILE NEWS OUTLETS ON THE RIGHT LIKE FOX NEWS ARE TOUTING THE REMOVAL OF MIGRANTS WITH CRIMINAL RECORDS.

FIRST YOU’LL HEAR MSNBC ANCHOR NICHOLLE WALLACE, CNN REPORTER PRISCILLA ALVAREZ, AND THEN FOX NEWS HOSTS SEAN HANNITY. TAKE A LISTEN.

“One thing we don’t have to wonder about is how it feels if you’re undocumented in america right now, or even if you worry you could be mistaken as undocumented because of the color of your skin or your name.”

“It could very well affect many other undocumented immigrants in the united States if they are in te path of these operations. Its not off the table they may be taken into custody as well, as the fear within the immigrant community as this continues in the weeks to come.”

“Another ICE arrest was a dominican man who beat his pregnant wife to death, in colorado, 50 tren de aragua members gathered up. Other ice raids busting rapists, suspected terrorists.only someone truly unhinged would have a problem with these deportations.

POLLS SUGGEST THE MAJORITY OF BOTH DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS –

BELIEVE THE COUNTRY’S IMMIGRATION SYSTEM IS “BROKEN.”

88 PERCENT OF AMERICANS POLLED BY THE NEW YORK TIMES SUPPORT DEPORTING MIGRANTS HERE ILLEGALLY WITH CRIMINAL RECORDS.

AND A MAJORITY – 55 PERCENT – **SUPPORT DEPORTING ALL IMMIGRANTS WHO ARE HERE ILLEGALLY.

WEEK ONE OF PRESIDENT TRUMP’S SECOND TERM SUGGESTS IMMIGRATION WILL BE A TOP PRIORITY FOR THE ADMINISTRATION.

AND WHILE CONTROVERSIES ARISE IN THE MEDIA – WITH LEFT AND RIGHT NEWS OUTLETS DEBATING WHAT CONSTITUTES THE **RIGHT OR **ETHICAL WAY TO CARRY OUT THESE DEPORTATIONS –

OPERATIONS ARE UNDERWAY – AND JUST BEGINNING.

Trump executive order pushes for Iron Dome-style protection in US

Listen
Share

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to develop a U.S. missile defense system modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome, calling it a top national security priority. The initiative seeks to establish a “next-generation missile defense shield” to counter advanced threats from Russia, China and North Korea.

What will the missile defense plan include?

The executive order, announced Monday, Jan. 27, directs Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to deliver a comprehensive plan within 60 days.

The plan includes accelerating the deployment of space-based missile tracking systems, developing interceptors capable of neutralizing missiles during launch phases and updating threat assessments to protect critical U.S. locations.

Why are experts skeptical about a U.S. Iron Dome?

Currently, the U.S. relies on missile defense systems like the Patriot and THAAD, as well as the Navy’s Aegis system.

However, experts have expressed skepticism about adapting a system like Israel’s Iron Dome to the geographic scale of the United States.

Instead, Trump’s vision emphasizes a multi-layered approach to intercepting short- and long-range missile threats at various stages of flight.

How does this tie to Reagan’s ‘Star Wars’ initiative?

Trump linked the initiative to former President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative, known as “Star Wars.” It aimed to protect the U.S. from nuclear attacks during the Cold War.

While Reagan’s vision was never fully realized, Trump said advancements in technology make this new effort feasible. He emphasized that all components would be manufactured domestically.

What challenges remain for the missile shield?

The executive order coincides with broader military reform efforts led by Hegseth. It includes reevaluating global missile defense postures and strengthening allied cooperation.

While timelines and costs for the proposed system remain unclear, the initiative reflects growing concerns over missile advancements by U.S. adversaries.

The order outlines a roadmap for addressing evolving threats. This includes hypersonic missiles and potential rogue-state attacks, reinforcing Trump’s commitment to “peace through strength.”

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP HAS SIGNED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER TO DEVELOP A U.S. MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM MODELED AFTER ISRAEL’S IRON DOME, CALLING IT A TOP NATIONAL SECURITY PRIORITY. ANNOUNCED MONDAY DURING A REPUBLICAN DINNER IN FLORIDA, THE INITIATIVE SEEKS TO CREATE A “NEXT-GENERATION MISSILE DEFENSE SHIELD” TO COUNTER ADVANCED THREATS FROM ADVERSARIES LIKE RUSSIA, CHINA, AND NORTH KOREA.

THE EXECUTIVE ORDER DIRECTS DEFENSE SECRETARY PETE HEGSETH TO DELIVER A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN WITHIN 60 DAYS. THIS PLAN INCLUDES ACCELERATING THE DEPLOYMENT OF SPACE-BASED MISSILE TRACKING SYSTEMS, DESIGNING INTERCEPTORS CAPABLE OF NEUTRALIZING ATTACKS DURING THEIR LAUNCH PHASE, AND UPDATING THREAT ASSESSMENTS TO SAFEGUARD CRITICAL U.S. LOCATIONS.

CURRENTLY, THE U.S. RELIES ON SYSTEMS LIKE THE PATRIOT AND THAAD TO INTERCEPT MISSILE THREATS, ALONG WITH THE NAVY’S AEGIS SYSTEM. HOWEVER, EXPERTS HAVE EXPRESSED SKEPTICISM ABOUT SCALING A SYSTEM LIKE ISRAEL’S IRON DOME TO COVER THE VAST GEOGRAPHY OF THE UNITED STATES. INSTEAD, TRUMP’S VISION SUGGESTS A MULTI-LAYERED DEFENSE APPROACH TO INTERCEPT SHORT- AND LONG-RANGE MISSILE THREATS AT VARIOUS STAGES OF FLIGHT.

TRUMP LINKED THE INITIATIVE TO PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN’S 1980S STRATEGIC DEFENSE INITIATIVE, KNOWN AS “STAR WARS,” WHICH AIMED TO PROTECT THE U.S. FROM NUCLEAR ATTACKS DURING THE COLD WAR. WHILE REAGAN’S VISION WAS NEVER FULLY REALIZED, TRUMP SAYS THAT ADVANCEMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY MAKE THIS NEW EFFORT FEASIBLE —ADDING THAT ALL COMPONENTS WOULD BE MANUFACTURED DOMESTICALLY.

THE EXECUTIVE ORDER COINCIDES WITH A BROADER MILITARY REFORM AGENDA UNDER SECRETARY HEGSETH, WHICH INCLUDES REEVALUATING GLOBAL MISSILE DEFENSE POSTURES AND REVIEWING ALLIED COOPERATION.

THE TIMELINE AND COSTS FOR IMPLEMENTING THE SYSTEM REMAIN UNCLEAR, BUT THE ADMINISTRATION’S PUSH REFLECTS RISING CONCERNS OVER MISSILE ADVANCEMENTS BY U.S. ADVERSARIES. THE EXECUTIVE ORDER OUTLINES A ROADMAP FOR ADDRESSING EVOLVING THREATS, INCLUDING HYPERSONIC MISSILES AND ROGUE-STATE ATTACKS, REINFORCING TRUMP’S COMMITMENT TO QUOTE “PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH.”

Fire at one of world’s largest battery storage facilities sparks safety concerns

Listen
Share

A significant California fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant in Monterey County, one of the world’s largest lithium-ion battery storage facilities, has raised concerns about the safety of such sites among local leaders. The heightened fears come as California increasingly transitions to renewable energy and electric vehicles, both of which require these batteries to function.

How bad was the fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant?

The blaze, which broke out on Jan. 16, marks the fourth fire to occur at the Moss Landing site since 2019. This most recent one burned for five days and destroyed approximately 80% of the batteries stored at the facility. Local officials have described the incident as a “wake-up call” and are calling for stricter safety regulations and greater local control over the placement of battery storage facilities.

How are elected officials responding to this incident?

In response to the incident, Assemblymember Dawn Addis introduced the Battery Energy Safety & Accountability Act to the California State Assembly. The proposed legislation would require local engagement in the permitting process for energy storage sites and would establish safety buffers around sensitive areas, such as schools and hospitals.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, D, has expressed support for an investigation into the cause of the fire and has signaled backing for measures to improve safety at facilities like Moss Landing.

What happens next?

The fire at Moss Landing has also stirred up additional opposition to a proposed battery storage project in Watsonville, located about 9 miles north of Moss Landing. An online petition opposing the establishment of additional battery storage facilities in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties has garnered over 3,000 signatures.

US ready to put bounties on Taliban leaders in Afghanistan, Rubio warns

What Rubio said

The freshly sworn-in top U.S. diplomat took to social media to issue the warning to the Taliban.

Rubio said he heard “the Taliban is holding more American hostages than has been reported,” adding, “If this is true, we will have to immediately place a VERY BIG bounty on their top leaders, maybe even bigger than the one we had on Bin Laden.”

Following the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, the U.S. bounty for Osama bin Laden soared to $50 million. However, no one was ever awarded the money because U.S. Seal Team 6 killed the terrorist leader in 2011.

Rubio did not provide details on who the Americans may be, but it is believed the Taliban has at least two Americans still in its custody.

Background on Taliban and U.S. negotiations

In the latest deal, the Biden administration freed Khan Mohammed, who was convicted of narco-terrorism charges, serving a life sentence in California. In exchange, the Taliban gave up Ryan Corbett, an American who had been imprisoned in Afghanistan since 2022.

The Taliban also released an American whose detention wasn’t previously known until the prisoner swap, William McKenty.

How the Taliban responded

In response to Rubio’s bounty suggestion, the Taliban’s ambassador to Qatar, Suhail Shaheen, warned the secretary of state on Monday, Jan. 27, against such threats.

Shaheen said it is the policy of the Afghan government to solve problems peacefully through dialogues and pointed to the recent release of Canadian David Lavery from an Afghan jail, after successful negotiations made possible by Qatar, as an example of this method in action.

During President Donald Trump’s first term in office, the administration negotiated directly with the Taliban, in a major break from past presidential administrations.

U-S SECRETARY OF STATE MARCO RUBIO SAYS THE U-S IS READY TO PUT BOUNTIES ON THE HEADS OF AFGHANISTAN’S TALIBAN LEADERS.

THE THREAT COMES JUST DAYS AFTER THE U-S AND TALIBAN-RUN AFGHAN GOVERNMENT SWAPPED PRISONERS UNDER THE FORMER BIDEN ADMINISTRATION.

THE FRESHLY-SWORN-IN TOP U-S DIPLOMAT TOOK TO SOCIAL MEDIA TO ISSUE THE WARNING TO THE TALIBAN.

SAYING HE HEARD “THE TALIBAN IS HOLDING MORE AMERICAN HOSTAGES THAN HAS BEEN REPORTED.”

ADDING, “IF THIS IS TRUE, WE WILL HAVE TO IMMEDIATELY PLACE A VERY BIG BOUNTY ON THEIR TOP LEADERS, MAYBE EVEN BIGGER THAN THE ONE WE HAD ON BIN LADEN.

FOLLOWING THE SEPTEMBER 11TH TERROR ATTACKS, THE U-S BOUNTY FOR OSAMA BIN LADEN SOARED TO 50 MILLION DOLLARS, THOUGH NO ONE WAS EVER-AWARDED THE MONEY AFTER SEAL TEAM SIX KILLED THE TERRORIST LEADER

RUBIO DID NOT PROVIDE DETAILS ON WHO THE AMERICANS MAY BE BUT IT’S BELIEVED THE TALIBAN HAS AT LEAST TWO AMERICANS STILL IN ITS CUSTODY.

IN THE LATEST DEAL, THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION FREED KHAN MOHAMMED, WHO WAS CONVICTED OF NARCO-TERRORISM CHARGES AND SERVING A LIFE SENTENCE IN THE U-S, IN EXCHANGE FOR AMERICAN RYAN CORBETT, WHO WAS IMPRISONED IN AFGHANISTAN SINCE 2022.

THE TALIBAN ALSO RELEASED AN AMERICAN WHOSE DETENTION WASN’T PREVIOUSLY KNOWN UNTIL THE PRISONER SWAP, WILLIAM MCKENTY.

IN RESPONSE TO RUBIO’S BOUNTY SUGGESTION, THE TALIBAN’S AMBASSADOR TO QATAR SUHAIL SHAHEEN WARNED THE SECRETARY OF STATE AGAINST SUCH THREATS.

SAYING IT’S THE POLICY OF THE AFGHAN GOVERNMENT TO SOLVE PROBLEMS PEACEFULLY THROUGH DIALOGUE.

SHAHEEN POINTED TO THE RECENT RELEASE OF CANADIAN DAVID LAVERY FROM AN AFGHANI JAIL AFTER NEGOTIATIONS MADE POSSIBLE BY QATAR AS AN EXAMPLE OF THIS METHOD IN ACTION.

DURING TRUMP’S FIRST TERM IN OFFICE, THE ADMINISTRATION NEGOTIATED DIRECTLY WITH THE TALIBAN, IN A MAJOR BREAK FROM PAST PRESIDENTIAL ADMINISTRATIONS.

‘They bought them’: Trump

“We released them,” Trump said. “We’ve released them today, and they’ll have them, and they paid for them. You know, they’ve been waiting for them for a long time, they’ve been in storage a long time, but we released them today.”

When asked by a reporter why he released the hold, Trump said, “Because they bought them.”

Trump posted to Truth Social, writing, “A lot of things that were ordered and paid for by Israel, but have not been sent by Biden, are on their way.”

Netanyahu’s responds

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Trump for lifting the hold on the one-ton bombs.

“Thank you, President Trump, for keeping your promise to give Israel the tools it needs to defend itself, to confront our common enemies, and secure a future of peace and prosperity,” Netanyahu said.

Why did the Biden administration hold the bombs?

The widely expected move comes after Biden held the delivery of the 2,000-pound bombs in hopes it would deter Israel from launching an offensive in the southern Gaza town of Rafah.

However, the move was unsuccessful, as Israel eventually launched military operations, but only after the majority of Palestinians fled the city.

What kind of bomb is it?

The Mark 84 is a high explosive, low drag general purpose bomb. Forces can outfit the bomb with different guidance kits to turn it into a precision strike weapon able to take out targets on land or at sea when in its Quicksink setup.

The 2,000-pound bomb makes quick work of concrete and metal, leaving a huge blast radius behind.

Before withholding them, the Biden administration sent thousands of the one-ton bombs to Israel in the wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attacks.

Continued US support for Israel

The U.S. sent billions of dollars to Israel in military support, and that is likely to continue under Trump. The aid will help Israel defend against Iranian-backed terror groups like Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.

Latest on the ceasefire deal

At the beginning of the Gaza ceasefire, which started earlier in January, both Israel and Hamas exchanged hostages and prisoners.

Before he took office, Trump vowed that there would be “hell to pay” if Hamas did not release all of the hostages.

The second phase of the ceasefire is in the works and may prove more difficult to navigate. This part of the deal aims to secure the remaining living hostages in Gaza, who have been there for more than 15 months.

TWO-THOUSAND POUND BOMBS ARE ON THE WAY TO ISRAEL, PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, LIFTED THE HOLD ON THE MUNITIONS PUT IN PLACE BY FORMER PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN.

[DONALD TRUMP]

WE RELEASED THEM. WE’VE RELEASED THEM TODAY, AND THEY’LL HAVE THEM AND THEY PAID FOR THEM. YOU KNOW, THEY’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THEM FOR A LONG TIME, THEY’VE BEEN IN STORAGE FOR A LONG TIME, BUT WE RELEASED THEM TODAY.

[REPORTER]

WHY DID YOU DO THAT, SIR?

[DONALD TRUMP]

BECAUSE THEY BOUGHT THEM.

[RYAN ROBERTSON]

TRUMP ALSO POSTED ON TRUTH SOCIAL BEFORE THOSE COMMENTS TO REPORTERS, SAYING:

“A LOT OF THINGS THAT WERE ORDERED AND PAID FOR BY ISRAEL, BUT HAVE NOT BEEN SENT BY BIDEN, ARE ON THEIR WAY!”

ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER BENJAMIN NETANYAHU THANKED TRUMP FOR LIFTING THE HOLD ON THE ONE-TON BOMBS.

[BENJAMIN NETANYAHU]

THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP, FOR KEEPING YOUR PROMISE TO GIVE ISRAEL THE TOOLS IT NEEDS TO DEFEND ITSELF, TO CONFRONT OUR COMMON ENEMIES, AND SECURE A FUTURE OF PEACE AND PROSPERITY.”

[RYAN ROBERTSON]

THE WIDELY EXPECTED MOVE COMES AFTER BIDEN HELD THE DELIVERY OF THE TWO-THOUSAND POUND BOMBS IN HOPES IT WOULD DETER ISRAEL FROM LAUNCHING AN OFFENSEIVE IN RAFAH.

IT DIDNT’ WORK.

ISRAEL DID EVENTUALLY LAUNCH MILITARY OPERATIONS IN RAFAH, BUT ONLY AFTER THE MAJORITY OF PALESTINIANS FLED THE CITY.

THE MARK 84 IS A HIGH EXPLOSIVE LOW DRAG GENERAL PURPOSE BOMB. IT CAN BE OUTFITTED WITH DIFFERENT GUIDANCE KITS TO TURN THIS DUMB MUNITION INTO A PRECICISION STRIKE WEAPON–ABLE TO TAKE OUT TARGETS ON LAND OR AT SEA WHEN IN ITS QUICKSINK SETUP.

THE ONE-TON BOMB MAKES QUICK WORK OF CONCRETE AND METAL, LEAVING A HUGE BLAST RADIUS BEHIND.

BEFORE WITHHOLDING THEM, THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION SENT THOUSANDS OF THE ONE-TON BOMBS TO ISRAEL IN THE WAKE OF HAMAS’ OCTOBER 7TH ATTACKS

THE U-S SENT BILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO ISRAEL IN MILITARY SUPPORT UNDER BIDEN, IT WILL CONTINUE UNDER  TRUMP TO HELP ISRAEL DEFEND AGAINST IRANIAN-BACKED TERRORIST GROUPS LIKE HAMAS IN GAZA, HEZBOLLAH IN LEBANON AND THE HOUTHIS IN YEMEN.

A GAZA CEASEFIRE WENT INTO EFFECT MORE THAN A WEEK AGO AND SOME ISRAELI HOSTAGES WERE RELEASED IN EXCHANGE FOR PALESTINIAN PRISONERS BEING HELD IN ISRAEL.

BEFORE HE TOOK OFFICE, TRUMP VOWED THERE WOULD BE “HELL TO PAY” IF ALL HOSTAGES WERE NOT RELEASED.

THE SECOND PHASE OF THE CEASE-FIRE HAS YET TO BE WORKED OUT AND MAY PROVE TO BE MORE DIFFICULT.

THAT PART OF THE DEAL IS EXPECTED TO SECURE THE RELEASE OF THE REMAINING LIVING HOSTAGES IN GAZA WHO’VE BEEN THERE FOR MORE THAN 15-MONTHS.

Another cargo ship cuts underwater cable in the Baltic Sea

A cargo ship, bearing a Maltese flag, is now anchored outside a port in Sweden. An investigation is underway after it was allegedly involved in a cable-cutting incident, in which a data cable that runs under the Baltic Sea from Sweden to Latvia was damaged.

What has the investigation found?

Prosecutors said the initial investigation led them to believe it was sabotage. Various levels of Swedish law enforcement, including the military and the coast guard, are now investigating the incident. The focus appears to be on a damaged anchor from the ship.

However, the Bulgarian shipping company which claimed ownership of the cargo vessel, Navigation Maritime Bulgare, said one of the ship’s anchors dropped to the sea floor in high winds and there was no malicious intent.

Who is responsible for the cable?

The cable belongs to Latvia’s state broadcaster, LVRTC. It said there had been disruptions in data transmission services, but most users would not be affected. Latvian Prime Minister Erika Silina said her country is now working with Sweden and NATO as part of the investigation.

This is just the latest in a series of such cable-cutting incidents in the Baltic Sea that started last year. Earlier this month, NATO launched its new Baltic Sentry Mission. It involves more aircraft, warships and drones patrolling in the area.

What is the international community doing?

NATO is also increasing its monitoring of Russia’s shadow fleet. Those are ships without official or clear ownership that are often used to haul oil products in an effort to circumvent international sanctions from Western countries. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said there is reason for grave concern over cable and infrastructure damage.

In another high-profile case, investigators from Finland were probing whether a Russian ship sabotaged an electricity cable in the Baltic, running from Finland to Estonia.

A CARGO SHIP, WITH A MALTESE FLAG, IS NOW ANCHORED OUTSIDE A PORT IN SWEDEN AND UNDER INVESTIGATION AFTER ANOTHER CABLE CUTTING INCIDENT.
A DATA CABLE, THAT RUNS UNDER THE BALTIC SEA FROM SWEDEN TO LATVIA, WAS DAMAGED.
PROSECUTORS SAY THE INITIAL INVESTIGATION LEADS THEM TO BELIEVE IT WAS SABOTAGE. VARIOUS LEVELS OF SWEDISH LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE NOW INVESTIGATING THE INCIDENT, INCLUDING THE MILITARY AND THE COAST GUARD. THE FOCUS APPEARS TO BE ON THE SHIP’S ANCHOR, WHICH IS APPARENTLY DAMAGED.
HOWEVER, THE BULGARIAN SHIPPING COMPANY, NAVIGATION MARITIME BULGARE, WHICH CLAIMED OWNERSHIP OF THE CARGO VESSEL, SAID ONE OF THE SHIP’S ANCHORS DROPPED TO THE SEA FLOOR IN HIGH WINDS AND THERE WAS NO MALICIOUS INTENT.
THE CABLE BELONGS TO LATVIA’S STATE BROADCASTER, LVRTC. IT SAID THERE HAD BEEN DISRUPTIONS IN DATA TRANSMISSION SERVICES, BUT MOST USERS WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED. LATVIAN PRIME MINISTER EVIKA SILINA SAID HER COUNTRY IS NOW WORKING WITH SWEDEN AND NATO AS PART OF THE INVESTIGATION.
THIS IS JUST THE LATEST IN SERIES OF SUCH CUTTING INCIDENTS UNDER THE BALTIC SEA THAT STARTED LAST YEAR. EARLIER THIS MONTH, NATO LAUNCHED ITS NEW **BALTIC SENTRY MISSION** THAT INVOLVES MORE AIRCRAFT, WARSHIPS AND DRONES PATROLLING IN THE AREA.
NATO IS NOW INCREASING ITS MONITORING OF RUSSIA’S SHADOW FLEET. THOSE ARE SHIPS WITHOUT OFFICIAL OR CLEAR OWNERSHIP, THAT ARE OFTEN USED TO HAUL OIL PRODUCTS IN AN EFFORT TO CIRCUMVENT EMBARGOES FROM WESTERN NATIONS. NATO secretary general MARK RUTTE SAID THERE IS “ REASON FOR GRAVE CONCERN” OVER CABLE AND INFRASTRUCTURE DAMAGE.

The Air Force removed the video from its curriculum for a review, following Trump’s executive order in his first week to remove all diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at the federal level.

Who criticized the Air Force’s decision?

Many criticized the move, including Republican Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama, which is home of the Tuskegee training base where the Tuskegee Airmen got their name.

Britt posted to X on Sunday, Jan. 26, describing the decision to pause the videos as “malicious compliance” with the DEI review. She also said President Trump celebrated the Tuskegee Airmen during his first term, promoting aviator Charles McGee to brigadier general and pinning his stars in the Oval Office.

Hegseth, who was sworn in Friday, Jan. 24, responded to Britt on X.

“We’re all over it Senator. This will not stand,” Hegseth said.

A few hours later Hegseth posted another update.

“This has been immediately reversed,” Hegseth said.

Are the WASP videos returning?

Videos about women Air Force service pilots, known as WASPS, is also back in the Air Force training curriculum. Officials temporarily removed the videos as the result of the DEI review.

How is the Air Force responding?

Brian Robinson, Air Education and Training Command commander for the Air Force, issued a statement on Sunday.

He said the videos had not been specifically targeted for removal. However, the overall DEI coursework removal was in compliance with President Trump’s orders.

He announced the training content would return Monday.

What are the results of Trump’s executive order?

Last week, the Trump administration emailed thousands of federal employees ordering them to report anyone trying to “disguise” diversity initiatives in their agencies or they would face “adverse consequences.”

While Trump’s executive order is limited to government agencies, several major companies have taken similar moves, including DEI training being scaled back at Meta, Amazon and Target.

Civil rights advocates argue that DEI programs are needed to address inequities and structural racism.

Critics of DEI programs say race and gender-focused initiatives are discriminatory and don’t prioritize merit.

NOW, THE VIDEO IS BACK, WITH INCOMING SECRETARY OF DEFENSE PETE HEGSETH PUSHING THE CHANGE.

THE AIR FORCE REMOVED THE VIDEO FROM ITS CURRICULUM FOR A REVIEW, FOLLOWING TRUMP’S EXECUTIVE ORDER IN HIS FIRST WEEK TO REMOVE ALL DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION INITIATIVES AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL.

MANY CRITICIZED THE MOVE … INCLUDING REPUBLICAN SENATOR KATIE BRITT FROM ALABAMA – HOME OF THE TUSKEGEE TRAINING BASE WHERE THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN GOT THEIR NAME.

BRITT POSTED TO X SUNDAY, DESCRIBING THE DECISION TO PAUSE THE VIDEOS AS “MALICIOUS COMPLIANCE” WITH THE D-E-I REVIEW AND SAID PRESIDENT TRUMP CELEBRATED THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN DURING HIS FIRM TERM PROMOTING AVIATOR CHARLES MCGEE TO BRIGADIER GENERAL AND PINNING HIS STARS IN THE OVAL OFFICE.

HEGSETH, WHO WAS SWORN IN FRIDAY, RESPONDED TO BRITT …

“WE’RE ALL OVER IT SENATOR. THIS WILL NOT STAND.”

A FEW HOURS LATER HEGSETH POSTED ANOTHER UPDATE… “THIS HAS BEEN IMMEDIATELY REVERSED. THANK YOU, SENATOR KATIE BRITT.”

VIDEO ABOUT WOMEN AIRFORCE SERVICE PILOTS – KNOWN AS “WASPS” – IS ALSO NOW BACK IN THE AIR FORCE TRAINING CURRICULUM AFTER IT WAS TEMPORARILY REMOVED AS THE RESULT OF THE D-E-I REVIEW.

BRIAN ROBINSON, AIR EDUCATION AND TRAINING COMMAND COMMANDER FOR THE AIR FORCE, ISSUED A STATEMENT SUNDAY SAYING THE VIDEOS HAD NOT BEEN SPECIFICALLY TARGETED FOR REMOVAL, BUT THE OVERALL D-E-I COURSEWORK REMOVAL WAS IN COMPLIANCE WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP’S ORDERS … ANNOUNCING THE TRAINING CONTENT WOULD RETURN MONDAY.

LAST WEEK, THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION EMAILED THOUSANDS OF FEDERAL EMPLOYEES ORDERING THEM TO REPORT ANYONE TRYING TO “DISGUISE” DIVERSITY INITIATIVES IN THEIR AGENCIES OR THEY WOULD FACE “ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES”.

WHILE TRUMP’S EXECUTIVE ORDER IS LIMITED TO GOVERNMENT  AGENCIES, SEVERAL MAJOR COMPANIES HAVE TAKEN SIMILAR MOVES, INCLUDING DEI TRAINING BEING SCALED BACK AT META, AMAZON AND TARGET.

CIVIL RIGHTS ADVOCATES ARGUE DEI PROGRAMS ARE NEEDED TO ADDRESS INEQUITIES AND STRUCTURAL RACISM.

Hegseth most recently worked as a political commentator and host at Fox News after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he received two Bronze Stars.

He has pledged to implement President Donald Trump’s proposals to eliminate diversity and alleged wokeness in the military.

But Hegseth faced controversy over his management of two veteran-focused political advocacy groups, as well as evidence alleging alcoholism and sexual misconduct.

The Minnesota native graduated from Princeton University in 2003, followed by more than a decade in the Army.

Hegseth ran an unsuccessful Senate campaign in Minnesota in 2012. He was also reportedly someone Trump considered to run the Department of Veterans Affairs during his first term.

Hegseth received some key support for his nomination, including from Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa. The senator backed Hegseth after originally expressing skepticism over his sexual assault allegations.

In 2017, a California Republican staffer told police that Hegseth sexually assaulted her and that she remembered repeatedly telling him no. Hegseth said he had sex with the woman and that it was consensual.

The Monterey County district attorney did not file charges. However, Hegseth paid the woman $50,000 as part of a 2020 settlement involving a non-disclosure agreement.

Reporting this week suggested more potential sexual misconduct, with outlets including NBC News and The Washington Post reporting that Hegseth’s former sister-in-law said he would get aggressively drunk, spout racist remarks and abuse his second wife.

The sister-in-law submitted a sworn affidavit this week to senators detailing the misconduct. The New York Times also reported that his second wife is under a non-disparagement clause from her ex-husband as part of their 2018 divorce agreement.

Before the final vote, Hegseth’s nomination advanced to the floor in a 51-49 vote, with Collins and Murkowski voting against.

McConnell was the only Republican to vote to advance the nomination but against the final confirmation.

California Gov. Newsom slows his Trump criticism as president visits fire sites

Listen

President Donald Trump visited California Friday, Jan. 24, to assess the damage from the ongoing fires in the Los Angeles area. And there to greet him when he arrived was a longtime foe, Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The Republican president and Democratic governor have been at odds for years, with Newsom criticizing Trump’s policies and behavior. Newsom recently struck a deal with lawmakers in Sacramento to set aside $50 million to “Trump-proof” his state via legal challenges to federal orders.

But while the president has continued to fire at Newsom, doling out the nickname “Newscum” and not inviting him to an emergency briefing, Newsom said Thursday, Jan. 23, that he was ready to welcome the president.

“I look forward to being there on the tarmac to thank the president, welcome him, and we’re making sure that all the resources he needs for a successful briefing are provided to him,” Newsom told reporters in a briefing.

When Trump arrived on the tarmac Friday, he briefly spoke to reporters. Trump said, “I appreciate the governor coming out and meeting me,” before the two shook hands.

Newsom’s recent shift could make it easier for him and the president to agree on terms of aid for the state and its residents ravaged by fires.

President Trump and his Republican allies have suggested placing conditions on aid for California. They include requiring the state to adopt policies favored by conservatives, such as a voter ID law.

Conditioning aid on policy changes would be a largely unprecedented move. Since the establishment of FEMA in the 1970s, the federal government has helped states after natural disasters, regardless of which party controlled the state or the White House.

Newsom hasn’t been entirely silent in response to President Trump’s comments. As the president and Republicans accuse Newsom of not bringing in enough water to keep fire hydrants running, Newsom called out “mis- and disinformation” about water availability. However, he refrained from calling Trump out by name.

While fire hydrants ran dry in Pacific Palisades as the fire spread, officials say it wasn’t a water shortage. Instead, they say it was dropping water pressure as demand rapidly increased.
