The CEO of the world’s largest bank is backing President Donald Trump’s tariff plans in a new interview. It’s a reversal from JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon’s past stance on tariffs.

In 2018, Dimon told CNN, that tariffs during Trump’s first term would be a “threat” to the economy.
He doubled down in 2019, telling the lobbying group Business Roundtable that tariffs “wouldn’t be positive,” according to the Financial Times.

Fast forward to Trump’s second term, Dimon had a fresh take while talking with CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
“They are an economic tool, that’s it. They’re an economic weapon, depending on how you use it and why you use it and stuff like that.” Dimon said. “People are arguing, is it inflationary, is it not inflationary? I would put it in perspective if it’s a little inflationary, but it’s good for national security, so be it. I mean, get over it.”
Dimon did not get into the details, saying the outcome depends on how the tariffs are implemented.
Why didn’t Trump move forward with tariffs on Day 1?
After winning the presidential election, Trump promised tariffs on his first day in office but that didn’t happen.
Trump told reporters Monday, Jan. 20, that he is still considering a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada, likely to go into effect Feb. 1.
As for China, the president said before taking office that tariffs on Chinese goods could be 60% or more, intensifying an ongoing trade war.
On his second day in office, Trump said they’re looking at a 10% tariff on China for the time being.
In a memo, Trump directed several agencies to study the effects of various tariffs and trade agreements.

He tasked the U.S. trade representative to look into whether China is breaking an existing trade agreement, which could lead to more tariffs.

As firefighters continue to make progress against the Palisades and Eaton fires, another fire has erupted in Los Angeles County. Dubbed the Hughes Fire, it reportedly spread from 50 acres to more than 1,000 acres in less than 24 hours.

Now, the fire is even bigger after it reportedly grew to around 3,400 acres in just two hours with zero percent containment.
Officials said the brush fire fed by strong winds and dry conditions on Wednesday, Jan. 22, led to evacuation orders for some areas, including an elementary school and a nearby aquatics center.

Firefighting planes and helicopters were deployed to douse water on the flames in the mountainous rural region.
So far, no injuries have been reported and there is currently no threat to any structures.
The cause of the Hughes Fire is so far unknown.
The fire comes as red flag warnings were extended into the night of Thursday, Jan. 23, in Los Angeles and Ventura counties as firefighters continue to battle the Palisades and Eaton fires.
Officials said that combined, both fires have killed at least 28 people and destroyed more than 14,000 structures.
However, officials said that progress is being made.
The Palisades Fire is nearly 70% contained, while the Eaton Fire is more than 90% contained.

The United Nations nuclear watchdog chief is warning world leaders that Iran’s recent promise to ramp up enrichment of uranium to nuclear weapons grade levels is well underway. Rafael Grossi, the International Atomic Energy Agency Director General, said, “Iran has moved into increasing the production, enrichment of 60% sevenfold.”

Grossi told reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, Jan. 21, Iran told the U.N. nuclear watchdog in December 2024 that it would rapidly increase uranium enrichment to around 90% purity.
The IAEA said about 42kg of uranium enriched to that level is enough to create one nuclear bomb.
Grossi said Iran currently has about 200 kg of uranium enriched up to 60%.
The warning from Grossi comes after French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned Western and European allies that Tehran is reaching a “point of no return” in its pursuit of nuclear-weapon-grade uranium earlier in January 2025.
Grossi called on Tehran and the Trump administration to begin talks to deter Iran from going further with its nuclear program.
It remains to be seen if President Donald Trump, who took a hardline with Iran during his first term, or Tehran will be open to a discussion.
Iran has repeatedly denied it is enriching uranium to make a nuclear weapon and claims that it is being used for peaceful purposes.

“I think if there were things for them to find, they would have found them,” Tacopina told reporters after a pretrial hearing on Jan. 15.
Spotlight on Rocky and Rihanna
The trial has also brought attention to Rocky’s personal life. His relationship with Rihanna, the mother of his two children, was a topic of discussion during a recent pretrial hearing that sparked social media buzz.
At the hearing, Judge Mark Arnold asked whether Rocky and Rihanna were legally married. Tacopina referred to Rihanna as Rocky’s “common-law wife,” but the judge ruled she could only be called his wife if they were legally wed.
Spousal privilege, which prevents one spouse from testifying against the other, only applies to legally married couples.

The world may know him for his music and high fashion – but today – ASAP Rocky’s biggest stage is the courtroom as his highly anticipated gun trial kicks off.
Jury selection begins Tuesday in Los Angeles for the 36-year-old’s trial on two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. The charges stem from a 2021 incident where he allegedly fired a gun at a former friend – Terell Ephron – also known as ASAP Relli. Rocky has pleaded not guilty.
Outside the courtroom, Rocky has been making headlines for his relationship with Rihanna. The pair – who have two children – were a topic of discussion during a recent pretrial hearing that sparked social media buzz.
“If they’re not legally married, we prefer that she not be referred to as his wife and if she’s just referred to as his significant other or mother of his child”
“Are they legally married anywhere?”
“I don’t know.”
The exchange stemmed from a question by Judge Mark Arnold, who asked if Rocky and Rihanna were legally married. President Donald Trump followed through on another campaign promise Tuesday, Jan. 21, when he pardoned Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht. The 40-year-old was serving two life sentences plus 40 years without parole for his ties to the infamous dark web marketplace.
In a post on his social media site, Truth Social, Trump said he spoke with Ulbricht’s mother and told her that her son’s full and unconditional pardon was “in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly.”
Trump added, “The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me.”

In his 2015 conviction, the court held Ulbricht liable for $183 million in sales of illegal drugs –– including heroin, cocaine and opioids –– as well as counterfeit IDs that occurred on his site.
The move comes shortly after Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., wrote a letter to Trump asking him to pardon Ulbricht.
“Our criminal justice system should protect society from violent lawbreakers instead of filling our prisons with nonviolent offenders like Mr. Ulbricht,” Paul wrote.
The pardon also realizes a promise Trump made while speaking to the Libertarian National Convention last May, when he pledged to commute Ulbricht’s sentence on his first day in office.
Silk Road was an early adopter of Bitcoin, and cryptocurrency advocates, as well as libertarian political voices such as Paul, have been vocal in pushing for a pardon for Ulbricht.
President Trump pardoned more than 1,500 people charged for their roles in the Jan. 6 insurrection on Inauguration Day. Ulbricht’s pardon came on Trump’s second day in office.

Why is the order unlikely to stand?
There are multiple reasons why Sustad and other legal experts believe the order will be struck down.
First, they contend the 14th Amendment is clear — “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
Second, Congress passed a law in 1952 to codify and reaffirm the 14th Amendment. Courts could interpret it as a statement that the legislative branch wants control over who gets citizenship.
Finally, multiple Supreme Court cases have ruled in favor of immigrants born in the United States. In United States v. Wong Kim Ark, the justices ruled that the 14th Amendment affirms the fundamental rule of citizenship by birth within the territory. In Plyer v. Doe, the justices ruled that the 14th Amendment applies to everyone, regardless of their legal status.
Is the order legal?
“As far as the legality, that’s highly dubious,” Sustad told Straight Arrow News. “I’m speaking as an immigration attorney, and so obviously, I’m coming at this as an advocate for immigrants. But at the same time, I’m not seeing much legal justification for this.”
Trump’s order officially prohibits federal agencies from issuing citizenship documents, like a passport or certificate, to a person whose mother was in the country illegally and whose father is not a citizen or lawful permanent resident. It also applies to those whose mothers were in the country legally but on a temporary basis. Trump is also barring federal agencies from accepting citizenship papers from state and local governments for babies born under the same circumstances.
The White House believes it is on sound legal footing. It contends the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship clause excludes those born in the United States but not “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.”

If Trump’s order is ultimately upheld, babies whose parents are not citizens or lawful permanent residents could be deported.
“The default is if you don’t have permission to be in the US and you’re not a US citizen, then you’re unauthorized in the United States,” Sustad said. “They don’t have permission to be present in the United States, and so they are removable.”
Sustad said this executive order could put many families in uncharted territory. He added that anyone who may be impacted should stay off the radar of immigration authorities.

The federal government has lifted its suspension on the Vineyard Wind project. This comes six months after a turbine blade failure at the offshore wind farm near Massachusetts scattered debris across surrounding beaches and waters.
The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) is still investigating the incident. However, they decided to lift the suspension, albeit with some conditions. A spokesperson for the agency has confirmed that Vineyard Wind will need to remove all turbine blades manufactured at a GE Vernova facility in Canada.

That factory was identified as the source of a defect that caused the failure in July 2024. A subsequent probe into the turbine manufacturers’ practices at this location revealed claims of using falsified data to allow substandard blades to pass quality inspections.
BSEE mandated the removal of blades from up to 22 of Vineyard Wind’s planned 62 turbines. They also prohibited using blades manufactured at the aforementioned GE Vernova Canadian facility in future installations. Additionally, the project’s developers must complete an environmental study to assess the damage caused by the incident.
The agency also imposed strict requirements for future turbine operations. These include verifying blade design criteria, ensuring turbines are fit for service and implementing monitoring systems capable of detecting and responding to blade damage.
Meanwhile, Vineyard Wind, in partnership with GE Vernova, has removed debris from the seafloor and conducted inspections of installed blades. They shipped some to a facility in France for further evaluation. In a statement, Vineyard Wind described its plan to resume operations as “rigorous.” They also emphasized its commitment to safety as a priority.

Why did Israel begin the operation?
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his military launched the operation, dubbed “Iron Wall,” to “defeat terrorism” in Jenin, an area known for harboring armed Palestinian groups.
It happened just hours after President Donald Trump rescinded Biden-era executive orders that authorized U.S. sanctions against people who undermine peace in the West Bank, mainly targeting Israeli settlers.
Israel accuses Iran of smuggling weapons and funds to Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and other armed groups in the West Bank.
A military source told Israeli media it would continue the operation for “as long as necessary.”
How is Palestine responding?
The prime minister of the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, Mohammed Mustafa, said the raid is the latest in “aggressive Israeli measures” against Palestinians.
Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad both called on Palestinians in the West Bank to escalate attacks against Israel in response to the Jenin operation.

Details behind Musk’s rally gesture
Musk, energized and passionate, took to the stage to a cheering crowd, fist-pumping and shouting into the microphone: “Yes! This is what victory feels like! Yeah!”
He went on to express his excitement about Trump’s victory, including sharing his vision of astronauts planting U.S. flags on Mars.
Musk mimed the motion of planting a flag twice on stage, with a loud grunt of enthusiasm.

However, it was a later moment in his speech that caused controversy.
Musk thanked Trump supporters and expressed his heartfelt gratitude, saying, “My heart goes out to you,” as he hit his chest and raised his arm twice, directing the gesture to the crowd.
The movement has led some on the Left to speculate that Musk made a Nazi-style salute.

Divergent Media Reactions from Left and Right
The interpretation of Musk’s gesture has sharply divided the media along political lines. Left-leaning outlets have focused on the resemblance to fascist and Nazi symbolism.

The Guardian: “Elon Musk appears to make back-to-back fascist salutes at inauguration rally.”
CNN anchors discussed the gesture live, saying, “that salute was evocative of things that we have seen throughout history” and even mentioning Musk’s growing political presence in Europe, particularly in far-right circles in Germany.
Right-leaning outlets have strongly rejected these accusations by focusing their coverage on criticizing the media’s interpretation of Musk’s gesture.

“No, Elon Musk did not do those salutes,” Stefanik responded. “The American people are smart. They see through it and they support Elon Musk.”
An unlikely ally for Musk came from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which defended Musk’s actions. Despite Musk’s previous disagreements with the ADL over speech regulation on X. The ADL posted a statement calling the gesture “awkward” but not a Nazi salute, urging people to extend grace in such a politically charged environment.
