What happened to Trump’s promised tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China?

President Donald Trump issued dozens of executive orders on his first day in office, including a reprieve for TikTok. But absent from his declarations is an implementation of tariffs, which he extensively mentioned on his way to the White House.

Shortly after winning November’s presidential election, Trump promised tariffs on his first day in office.

“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump posted on Truth Social in November.

The president even spoke about tariffs during his inaugural address.

“Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens,” the president said Monday, Jan. 20. “For this purpose, we are establishing the External Revenue Service to collect all tariffs, duties and revenues. It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury coming from foreign sources.”

Where tariffs on Mexico and Canada stand today

For Mexico and Canada, the timeline for tariffs has changed. Trump told reporters Monday he was still looking at a 25% tariff on the two countries for allowing “vast numbers of people to come in and fentanyl to come in.” He said those tariffs would likely be enacted on Feb. 1.

In a memo titled, “America First Trade Policy,” Trump calls for the U.S. trade representative to look at the impacts of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, known as the USMCA, which Trump signed in his first term to replace NAFTA. The result of that analysis may help the president decide whether to stay in the trade pact. Trump also directed multiple agencies to look at the flows of fentanyl and migration over both borders.

Trump’s 60% China tariff threat

The president said before taking office that tariffs on China could reach 60% or more. Now, he is ordering his trade representative to look into whether China is breaking an existing trade agreement, which could lead to more tariffs. The action is aimed at “reversing the destructive impact of globalist, America last trade policy,” according to a fact sheet reportedly seen by Bloomberg.

Additionally, the president suggested China could face tariffs if Beijing stood in the way of selling off TikTok’s U.S. operations. But President Trump is open to negotiations. He said he would be having “meetings and calls” with his Chinese counterpart, President Xi Jinping.

The “America First Trade Policy” also directs government agencies to investigate Trump’s idea for an External Revenue Service, like the IRS, but for collecting tariff revenue. Currently, the Treasury Department sets tariff collection rules, and Customs and Border Protection collects them.

While it appears no tariffs will be charged in Trump’s first week in office, his 2,000-word memo affirms it is still a cornerstone of his trade policy.

[Donald Trump]
I always say Tariffs is the most beautiful word to me in the dictionary.

Because Tariffs are going to make us rich as hell. It’s going to bring our country’s business back that left us.

[Simone Del Rosario]

As President Donald Trump says, tariff is one of his favorite words. And he’s used it a lot over the past several months. But after promising on day one to put tariffs on U.S. trading partners, day one has come and gone, so what’s happening with his tariffs? He’s got several government agencies looking into it.

Shortly after winning the election in November, Trump posted on Truth Social:

“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.”

On January 20th, Trump signed dozens of executive orders, including ones to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement and rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. But implementing tariffs didn’t make the list, despite mentioning the levies in his inaugural address.

Donald Trump:

Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens. or this purpose, we are establishing the external revenue service to collect all tariffs, duties and revenues. It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury coming from foreign sources.

Simone Del Rosario:

As far as Mexico and Canada go, the timeline has changed.

Reporter question:
“Where are you thinking on tariffs on Mexico, given these actions you’re signing on the border?”
Donald Trump:
“Well, we’re thinking in terms of 25% on Mexico and Canada, because they’re allowing vast numbers of people – Canada is a very bad abuser also – vast numbers of people to come in and fentanyl to come in.
(Reporter: When do you think we would enact those?)
I think February 1st. I think we’ll do it February 1st.
(Reporter; 25% on both, sir?)
On each.”

Simone Del Rosario:

In a memo titled “America First Trade Policy,” Trump calls for the U.S. Trade Representative to look at the impacts of the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, known as the USMCA, which Trump signed his first term to replace NAFTA. The result may ultimately help the president decide whether to stay in the pact. Trump also directed multiple agencies to look at the flows of fentanyl and migration.

When it comes to China, the president said before taking office that tariffs could reach 60%. Now the president is ordering his trade rep to look at whether China is breaking an existing agreement, which could lead to more tariffs. The action is aimed at “reversing the destructive impact of globalist, America last trade policy,” according to a fact sheet seen by Bloomberg News.

Additionally, the president suggested China could face tariffs if Beijing stood in the way of selling off TikTok’s U.S. operations. Overall, Trump said he would be having “meetings and calls” with his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping.

Included in the “America First Trade Policy” is directing agencies to investigate Trump’s idea for an External Revenue Service, like the IRS but for tariffs. It’s unclear how it would be different from the existing system, where the Treasury Department sets tariff collection rules and Customs and Border Protection collects them.

Ex-Georgia DA on trial for obstruction in Ahmaud Arbery death case

Listen

Jury selection has begun for a former Georgia prosecutor accused of interfering with the investigation into the murder of an unarmed Black man. Jackie Johnson, the former district attorney for Georgia’s Brunswick Judicial Circuit, is charged with violating her oath of office and obstruction in connection with the 2020 shooting death of 25-year-old Ahmaud Arbery.

What’s the background?

Arbery was jogging in the Satilla Shores subdivision in February 2020 when three white men chased him down in an attempt to detain him at gunpoint for police. Father and son Gregory and Travis McMichael and their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, claimed they suspected Arbery of stealing equipment from nearby homes under construction.

During the confrontation, Arbery tried to run past Travis McMichael; they scuffled, and Arbery was fatally shot.

Here’s where Jackie Johnson comes in

Greg McMichael had formerly worked for Johnson as an investigator for the DA’s office. Before that he was a police officer.

Though she recused herself from the case immediately, Johnson is accused of trying to shield the McMichaels from legal recourse. None of the men were charged in Arbery’s death until two months after it happened, when video of the incident was released, which raised public outcry.

Johnson denies any wrongdoing. Opening statements will begin once jury selection is over.

Where are the McMichaels and Bryan now?

Greg and Travis McMichael and Roddie Bryan are all serving life sentences on state murder charges and were all convicted on federal hate crime charges.

In March of last year, the trio appealed against the federal hate crimes verdict against them, and in October, they asked for a new trial on the state murder charges.

Arbery’s legacy

Arbery’s death, along with those of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, sparked a series of Black Lives Matter protests across the country in the summer of 2020, calling for an end to police brutality and racial injustice. The protests were the largest in U.S. history, with an estimated 15-26 million people participating.

It also spurred a slew of legal changes in Georgia. In June 2020, Georgia enacted a new bipartisan hate crime law. Previous versions of the legislation had passed the state House but failed in the Senate. Prior to Arbery’s murder, Georgia was one of just four states without any hate crime laws.

On Feb. 16, 2021, exactly a week before the first anniversary of Arbery’s murder, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, R, announced big changes to the state’s citizen’s arrest law, which dated back to the Civil War era. He said the law was outdated and vague.

The McMichaels and Bryan said they were attempting to perform a lawful citizen’s arrest when Arbery was shot. Kemp said the changes closed numerous loopholes in the law, while still protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens.

The outdated law was replaced with new legislation, allowing for certain people, like licensed private detectives, security guards, shopkeepers and restaurant employees, to conduct arrests under specific circumstances. The changes were signed into law with strong bipartisan support on May 10, 2021.

Hamas police forces are not allowed near Israeli troops and are not permitted to enter buffer zones near the border with Israel.

The U.S. and Israeli security officials reportedly urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to come up with a plan for governing Gaza in the aftermath of the war.

So far, he has not done so.

Hamas has now stepped in to fill that gap, despite Netanyahu saying at the outset of the war that one of the objectives was to crush Hamas.

Israel-Hamas War overview

The war began when Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing an estimated 1,200 Israeli citizens and taking another 250 people hostage. Israel responded with a ground and air campaign that reduced much of Gaza to rubble.

The conflict left about 47,000 Palestinians dead, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry. Many of Hamas’ top leaders were also killed.

Earlier this month, former Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned Hamas had recruited nearly as many new fighters as it had lost in the war. He called the terror group a chameleon.

On Sunday, Jan. 19, the Israeli foreign minister stated that a permanent end to the war would require Hamas to give up power in later negotiations. He said there would be no peace, stability or security in the region if Hamas remains.

Still, Hamas is showing its authority by parading through the streets of Gaza, in uniforms and armed, while flashing victory signs.

President Donald Trump said Monday, that he is not confident the ceasefire will last and that Gaza looks like a massive demolition site.

JUST DAYS AFTER A CEASE-FIRE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND HAMAS TOOK EFFECT IN THE MIDDLE EAST, A NEW DEVELOPMENT IS GETTING INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION. HAMAS-RUN POLICE ARE NOW BACK PATROLLING THE STREETS OF GAZA.
UNDER TERMS OF THE CEASE-FIRE, POLICE OVERSEEN BY HAMAS ARE RESPONSIBILE FOR KEEPING LAW AND ORDER AMONG PALESTINIANS AND WILL MONITOR THE MOVEMENT AND RE-ENTRY OF PALESTINIANS INTO THE THEIR HOMES. HAMAS POLICE FORCES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED NEAR ISRAELI TROOPS AND ARE NOT PERMITTED TO ENTER BUFFER ZONES NEAR THE BORDER WITH ISRAEL.
THE UNITED STATES AND ISRAELI SECURITY OFFICIALS REPORTEDLY URGED PRIME MINISTER BENJAMIN NETANYAHU TO COME UP WITH A PLAN FOR GOVERNING GAZA IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE WAR. BUT SO FAR, NETANYAHU HAS NOT DONE SO. HAMAS HAS NOW STEPPED IN TO FILL THAT GAP, DESPITE THE ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER SAYING AT THE OUTSET OF THE WAR THAT ONE OF THE OBJECTIVES WAS TO CRUSH HAMAS.
THE WAR BEGAN AFTER HAMAS ATTACKED ISRAEL ON OCTOBER 7TH, 2023, KILLING AN ESTIMATED 1200 ISRAELI CITIZENS AND TAKING ANOTHER 250 HOSTAGE. ISRAEL RESPONDED WITH A GROUND AND AIR CAMPAIGN THAT REDUCED MUCH OF GAZA TO RUBBLE AND LEFT ABOUT 47,000 PALESTINIANS DEAD, ACCORDING TO THE HAMAS-RUN PALESTINIAN HEALTH MINISTRY. MANY OF HAMAS’S TOP LEADERS WERE ALSO KILLED.
EARLIER THIS MONTH, BEFORE THE CHANGE IN ADMINISTRATIONS IN WASHINGTON, FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE ANTONY BLINKEN WARNED THAT HAMAS HAD RECRUITED NEARLY AS MANY NEW FIGHTERS THAT IT LOST IN THE WAR, CALLING THE TERROR GROUP “A CHAMELEON”.
ON SUNDAY, THE ISRAELI FOREIGN MINISTER STATED A PERMANENT END TO THE WAR WOULD REQUIRE HAMAS TO GIVE UP POWER IN LATER NEGOTIATIONS.
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP WEIGHED-IN ON THE MATTER, WHILE TAKING QUESTIONS IN THE OVAL OFFICE AFTER HIS INAUGURATION MONDAY. What’s been revealed about the suspect?

A U.S. Homeland Security official, granted anonymity by The Washington Post, said the gunman was a German national, and the passenger injured is a U.S. citizen.

So far, authorities have not released any more information, other than the fact that the FBI is heading the investigation into the deadly shooting.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency spokesperson told Newsweek that that agency will release more information “as soon as it becomes available.”

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman released a statement in response to the border patrol agent’s death.

“Every single day, our border patrol agents put themselves in harm’s way so that Americans and our homeland are safe and secure,” Huffman said. “My prayers and deepest condolences are with our department, the agent’s family, loved ones, and colleagues.”

Roads in Canada and the United States were temporarily closed as a result of the incident.

The bigger picture

The death of the border patrol agent came on the same day that Trump issued an executive order directing the U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) to seek the death penalty for the killing of law enforcement officers.

President Donald Trump pardoned approximately 1,500 people who were charged, arrested and jailed for crimes related to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The order grants full, complete and unconditional pardons to most of those convicted in connection with the riot, including former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who had been sentenced to 22 years in prison for seditious conspiracy.

The Department of Justice had charged roughly 1,600 individuals in connection with the Capitol riot.

While most of them received pardons, 14 received commutations, a lesser form of clemency that allows for immediate release but leaves felony convictions on their records. One of those commuted was Stewart Rhodes, founder of the Oath Keepers.

The sweeping pardons align with Trump’s long-standing calls for the release of Jan. 6 prisoners, whom he has referred to as “hostages,” “patriots” and “victims of political persecution.”

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi condemned the pardons, calling them “an outrageous insult to our justice system and the heroes who suffered physical scars and emotional trauma as they protected the Capitol, Congress, and the Constitution.”

A CBS poll released this month showed that 72% of Republicans and 41% of Democrats supported pardons for those involved in the Jan. 6 riot.

PRESIDENT TRUMP PARDONED ROUGHLY 15 HUNDRED PEOPLE WHO WERE CHARGED, ARRESTED, AND JAILED FOR JANUARY SIXTH RELATED CRIMES.

“ we have a list of pardons and commutations relating to events that occurred on january 6 2021.”

“How many people is this?”

“This order will apply to approximately 1500 people sir.”

“This is January 6, the hostages, approximately 1500 for a pardon, full pardon!”

IN ONE OF HIS FIRST ACTIONS AS THE 47TH PRESIDENT –

TRUMP HAS GRANTED CLEMENCY – INCLUDING “FULL, COMPLETE, AND UNCONDITIONAL” PARDONS FOR JANUARY SIXTH PRISONERS.

AMONG THOSE THAT ARE NOW FREED –

“ENRIQUE TARRIO” – THE FORMER NATIONAL LEADER OF THE PROUD BOYS – WHO WAS SENTENCED TO 22 YEARS BEHIND BARS FOR “SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY”.

THE ORDER ALSO CALLED ON THE DOJ TO SHUT DOWN ITS PENDING PROSECUTIONS OF OTHER JANUARY SIXTH RELATED CRIMES.

TRUMP ASKED THE BUREAU OF PRISONS TO FACILITATE THE RELEASES IMMEDIATELY.

THE DOJ HAD CHARGED ABOUT 16 HUNDRED PEOPLE FOR HAVING A ROLE IN THE JANUARY SIXTH CAPITOL RIOT.

WHILE MOST WERE GRANTED PARDONS –

14 PEOPLE RECEIVED COMMUTATIONS.

WHICH IS A LESSER FORM OF CLEMENCY.

IT WILL STILL ALLOW FOR THEIR RELEASE FROM PRISON IMMEDIATELY –

BUT THEY WILL HAVE FELONY CONVICTIONS ON THEIR RECORDS.

ONE OF THOSE 14 PEOPLE INCLUDES ANOTHER HIGH PROFILE JANUARY SIXTH CASE – OF STEWARD RHODES –

THE FOUNDER OF THE GROUP “OATH KEEPERS.”

THIS NEARLY-BLANKET PARDON ALIGNS WITH TRUMP’S CALLS FOR THE PRISONERS’ RELEASE THAT HE MADE ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL –

REFERRING TO THE PRISONERS AS “HOSTAGES” “PATRIOTS” AND “VICTIMS OF POLITICAL PERSECUTION.”

FORMER HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI DISAGREES –

CONDEMNING THE PRESIDENT’S PARDON –

SAYING “The President’s actions are an outrageous insult to our justice system and the heroes who suffered physical scars and emotional trauma as they protected the Capitol, the Congress and the Constitution. Despite the President’s decision, we must always remember the extraordinary courage and valor of the law enforcement heroes who stood in the breach and ensured that democracy survived on that dark day.”

A CBS POLL RELEASED THIS MONTH SHOWED 72 PERCENT OF REPUBLICANS WERE IN SUPPORT OF JANUARY SIX PARDONS –

AND 41 PERCENT OF DEMOCRATS SUPPORTED THE MOVE.

During his confirmation hearing, Rubio addressed several international issues. He called the ongoing conflict in Ukraine a “stalemate” that must end, urging both Russia and Ukraine to make concessions in any future peace deal. He also stressed the importance of NATO, despite Trump’s previous criticisms of the alliance. On the Israel-Hamas conflict, Rubio affirmed Israel’s right to defend itself. He also often singled out China’s growing threat to the U.S.

“We are once again called to create a free world out of the chaos,” Rubio said. “This will not be easy, and it will be impossible without a strong and confident America that engages in the world, putting our core national interests once again above all else.”

With his confirmation, Rubio assumes a challenging role amid significant international tensions, including the war in Ukraine, the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, and rising challenges from China, which the former FBI director called “the threat of our generation.”

Rubio’s confirmation process was less controversial than many of Trump’s other cabinet picks. During his confirmation hearing, Rubio received praise from both sides of the aisle, including New Hampshire Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. That support carried into the full Senate vote, where Rubio was approved unanimously.

Another Trump pick, John Ratcliffe, for CIA director, is expected to be confirmed quickly as soon as Tuesday, Jan. 21.

THE VOTE CAME AFTER A UNANIMOUS RECOMMENDATION FROM “THE SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE” EARLIER IN THE DAY.

RUBIO – A SENATOR SINCE 2011 AND A FIRST-GENERATION CUBAN AMERICAN, BRINGS A STRONG FOREIGN POLICY BACKGROUND TO HIS NEW ROLE, HAVING SERVED ON BOTH THE SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS AND INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEES.

DURING HIS CONFIRMATION HEARING –

RUBIO ADDRESSED SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL ISSUES, INCLUDING THE ONGOING CONFLICT IN UKRAINE, CALLING IT A “STALEMATE” THAT MUST END… URGING BOTH RUSSIA AND UKRAINE TO MAKE CONCESSIONS IN ANY FUTURE PEACE DEAL.

RUBIO ALSO STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF NATO, DESPITE PRESIDENT TRUMP’S PREVIOUS CRITICISMS OF THE ALLIANCE.

ON THE ISRAEL-HAMAS CONFLICT, HE AFFIRMED ISRAEL’S RIGHT TO DEFEND ITSELF.

AND RUBIO OFTEN SINGLED OUT CHINA’S THREAT TO THE U.S.

<We are once again called to create a free world out of the chaos. And this will not be easy. And it will be impossible without a strong and a confident America that engages in the world, putting our core national interests once again above all else.”>

WITH THIS CONFIRMATION, RUBIO NOW TAKES ON A CHALLENGING ROLE AT A TIME OF SIGNIFICANT INTERNATIONAL TENSIONS –

INCLUDING THE WAR IN UKRAINE, THE ONGOING ISRAEL-HAMAS CONFLICT –

AND RISING CHALLENGES FROM CHINA –

WHICH THE NOW **FORMER FBI DIRECTOR CALLED **THE THREAT OF OUR GENERATION.

RUBIO’S CONFIRMATION PROCESS WAS LESS CONTROVERSIAL THAN MANY OF PRESIDENT TRUMP’S OTHER CABINET PICKS.

DURING HIS CONFIRMATION HEARING, RUBIO RECEIVED PRAISE FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE, INCLUDING FROM SENATOR JEANNE SHAHEEN, THE TOP DEMOCRAT ON THE SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE.

The U.S. is currently the world’s second-largest emitter of carbon dioxide, following China and surpassing India. Since 1950, the United States has been responsible for about 20% of global CO2 emissions, according to data from the Global Carbon Project.

Laurence Tubiana played a key role in creating the Paris agreement. He highlighted ongoing climate disasters, such as the recent wildfires in Los Angeles, as stark reminders of the urgency of addressing climate change.

Scientists warn that the Earth’s temperature has risen 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit since the mid-1800s, surpassing the critical threshold. Scientists said 2024 was the warmest year on record, raising concerns about the long-term effects of higher temperatures.

Trump plans to increase domestic energy production, which clashes with global efforts to limit fossil fuel emissions. His withdrawal from the Paris agreement also contrasts with former President Joe Biden’s proposal to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60% by 2035.

It will be at least a year before Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. from the agreement is fully realized.

AS DAY ONE OF DONALD TRUMP’S SECOND PRESIDENCY WRAPS UP, HE’S ALREADY PUSHING FOR MORE ENERGY PRODUCTION WHILE PULLING THE U.S. OUT OF A GLOBAL CLIMATE AGREEMENT.

ON MONDAY, THE NEWLY SWORN-IN PRESIDENT SIGNED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER TO WITHDRAW AMERICA FROM THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT.

THIS MOVE MIRRORS TRUMP’S DECISION DURING HIS FIRST TERM TO EXIT THE ACCORD, WHICH WAS DESIGNED TO CURB GLOBAL WARMING.

AMERICA CURRENTLY STANDS NUMBER TWO ON THE LIST OF CARBON EMITTERS…TRAILING CHINA AND PASSING INDIA.

SINCE 1950, THE U-S HAS ACCOUNTED FOR ABOUT TWENTY PERCENT OF GLOBAL CO2 EMISSIONS, BASED ON DATA FROM THE GLOBAL CARBON PROJECT.

LAURENCE TUBIANA, WHO HELPED CRAFT THE PARIS AGREEMENT, POINTS TO DISASTERS LIKE THE LOS ANGELES WILDFIRES AS PROOF THAT CLIMATE CHANGE IS WORSENING.

THE 2015 PARIS AGREEMENT WAS A DECLARATION MADE BY WORLD LEADERS–ADOPTED BY 196 NATIONS– TO KEEP GLOBAL TEMPERATURES FROM RISING MORE THAN TWO DEGREES CELSIUS ABOVE WHERE THEY WERE PRIOR TO INDUSTRIALIZATION.

SCIENTISTS SAY EARTH’S TEMPERATURE CROSSED A CONCERNING MILESTONE, 2024 WAS THE HOTTEST YEAR ON RECORD.

AND SINCE THE MID 1800’S, THE GLOBAL TEMPERATURE IS PUSHING PAST THE WARMING THRESHOLD–NOW READING TWO POINT SEVEN DEGREES.

ONCE TEMPERATURES RISE BEYOND 1.5 DEGREES, THE CLIMATE CRISIS, DRIVEN BY POLLUTION FROM FOSSIL FUELS, PUSHES BOTH HUMANS AND THE PLANET BEYOND THEIR CAPACITY TO COPE AND ADAPT.

TRUMP’S DECISION IS A ONE EIGHTY FROM THE BIDEN’S ADMINISTRATION DECEMBER PROPOSAL TO CUT EMISSIONS BY MORE THAN SIXTY PERCENT IN THE NEXT DECADE.

TRUMP’S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PARIS AGREEMENT WILL TAKE AT LEAST A YEAR TO FULLY TAKE EFFECT.

In a speech that laid out his vision for the country, Trump declared that “the golden age of America begins right now” and vowed to “put America first” throughout his presidency. Here are five key takeaways from the speech.

1. Trump shares optimism for ‘golden age of America’

Trump began his address by proclaiming that America’s decline was over. He framed his recent election as a mandate to reverse what he called “a horrible betrayal” by previous administrations. “From this moment on, America’s decline is over,” he said.

“My recent election is a mandate to completely and totally reverse a horrible betrayal, and all of these many betrayals that have taken place and to give the American people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy and indeed their freedom,” Trump said. “From this moment on, America’s decline is over.”

2. Executive actions align with campaign promises

Trump reiterated key themes from his campaign, focusing on immigration, energy and trade. He promised to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy and deploy troops to the southern border, calling it his responsibility to defend the country from “threats and invasions.”

“As commander in chief, I have no higher responsibility than to defend our country from threats and invasions, and that is exactly what I am going to do,” Trump said.

3. Ambitious goals include U.S. flag on Mars

Trump again shared his plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” and reassert control over the Panama Canal. He also announced a goal to send astronauts to Mars in what he called the country’s “Manifest Destiny.”

“We will pursue our Manifest Destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the stars and stripes on the planet Mars,” Trump said.

4. Trump criticizes Department of Justice

The president vowed to end what he described as the “weaponization” of the government, particularly the Justice Department.

“Never again will the immense power of the state be weaponized to persecute political opponents,” Trump said. “The vicious, violent and unfair weaponization of the Justice Department and our government will end.”

Trump was charged in four different criminal cases, though only one made it to trial before the election.

5. Assassination attempt’s impact on re-election

Trump also recalled a near-assassination attempt on his life during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, last July. He said he felt his survival was part of a higher purpose and cited divine intervention as part of his re-election.

“I felt then and believe even more so now that my life was saved for a reason. I was saved by God to make America great again,” Trump said.

Executive actions on day one

After delivering his speech, Trump wasted no time signing a series of executive orders. The first order revoked about 80 executive actions signed by former President Joe Biden. Trump also signed a freeze on new government regulations and imposed a hiring freeze on federal workers. Additionally, he withdrew the United States from the Paris climate agreement.

Scientists at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University, along with the U.S. Forest Service, found the hidden aquifer while looking at drill holes left behind by previous geothermal experiments and realized the rock was still wet further down than previously thought.

How does the discovery compare to Lake Mead?

Researchers say the reservoir water totals are at least 81 cubic kilometers, tripling Lake Mead’s capacity.

“It is a continental-size lake stored in the rocks at the top of the mountains, like a big water tower,” earth scientist and the study’s co-author Leif Karlstrom said.

The Cascade Range extends for about 700 miles from northern California to British Columbia, and has been built up by volcanic activity over millions of years.

The high Cascades, within Oregon, where volcanic rocks date back 8 million years, have smooth slopes and ongoing volcanic activity. Meanwhile, the older Western Cascades that date to 45 million years ago, are filled with canyons and valleys carved by flowing streams.

The researchers used the gradual shift between these two zones to study how volcanic processes have affected the region over time, with the reservoir discovery coming as a complete surprise.

What does the discovery mean?

Researchers say the untapped source of water is a reason to celebrate, but caution that it’s fed by snow, and snowpack is expected to decline significantly in the Cascades in the coming decades.

“If we don’t have any snow, or if we have a run of bad winters where we don’t get any rain, what’s that going to mean?” USFS Geologist Gordon Grant said. “Those are the key questions we’re now having to focus on.”

A MAJOR DISCOVERY BENEATH THE CASCADE MOUNTAINS … AS RESEARCHERS UNCOVER A MASSIVE WATER RESERVOIR … ESTIMATED TO BE THREE TIMES THE VOLUME OF THE LARGEST RESERVOIR IN THE UNITED STATES.

SCIENTISTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON AND OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY … ALONG WITH THE U-S FOREST SERVICE … FOUND THE HIDDEN AQUIFIER WHILE LOOKING AT DRILL HOLES LEFT BEHIND BY PREVIOUS GEO-THERMAL EXPERIMENTS … AND REALIZED THE ROCK WAS STILL WET FURTHER DOWN THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT.

RESEARCHERS SAY THE RESERVOIR WATER TOTALS ARE AT LEAST 81 CUBIC KILOMETERS – TRIPLING LAKE MEAD’S CAPACITY – WITH EARTH SCIENTIST AND THE STUDY’S CO-AUTHOR LEIF KARLSTROM CALLING IT

“A CONTINENTAL-SIZE LAKE STORED IN THE ROCKS AT THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAINS, LIKE A BIG WATER TOWER.”

THE CASCADE RANGE EXTENDS FOR ABOUT 700 MILES FROM NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TO BRITISH COLUMBIA – BUILT UP BY VOLCANIC ACTIVITY OVER MILLIONS OF YEARS.

WITHIN OREGON, THE HIGH CASCADES, WHERE VOLCANIC ROCKS DATE BACK 8 MILLION YEARS THERE ARE SMOOTH SLOPES AND ONGOING VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.

WHILE THE OLDER WESTERN CASCADES THAT DATE TO 45 MILLION YEARS AGO ARE FILLED WITH CANYONS AND VALLEYS CARVED BY FLOWING STREAMS.

THE RESEARCHERS USED THE GRADUAL SHIFT BETWEEN THESE TWO ZONES TO STUDY HOW VOLCANIC PROCESSES HAVE AFFECTED THE REGION OVER TIME WITH THE RESERVOIR DISCOVERY COMING AS A COMPLETE SURPRISE.

WHILE RESEARCHERS SAY THE UNTAPPED SOURCE OF WATER IS A REASON TO CELEBRATE, THEY CAUTION ITS FED BY SNOW AND SNOWPACK IS EXPECTED TO DECLINE SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE CASCADES IN THE COMING DECADES.

Incoming White House officials say they plan to end asylum — a form of international protection granted to individuals fleeing persecution in their home countries — citing concerns that the practice is being abused by some migrants.

Fox News reported that officials also say Trump will reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy, officially known as the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). The policy requires migrants seeking asylum in the U.S. to wait in Mexico while their asylum cases are processed, rather than staying in the U.S. during legal proceedings.

Trump’s executive orders are set to reverse several Biden-era border policies, including the use of the CBP One app, which allows migrants to seek asylum in the United States.

Nearly 1.5 million migrants were allowed entry into the country through the app, according to Fox News.

Additionally, Trump plans to sign an order ending birthright citizenship, challenging the Constitution’s guarantee of citizenship for all individuals born on U.S. soil.

“On a prospective basis, the federal government will not recognize automatic birthright citizenship for children of illegal aliens born in the United States,” a Trump White House official said during a call with reporters on the morning of Monday, Jan. 20.

Since winning the November election, Trump has maintained that he has a “mandate” from the American people to secure the border. He stated on Sunday, Jan. 19, during a pre-inauguration dinner, that he would be signing nearly 100 executive orders within hours of taking office.

On Monday, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected the “Remain in Mexico” policy, and announced that her government is developing new strategies to counter Trump’s mass deportation plan.

SHORTLY AFTER HE’S INAUGURATED, PRESIDENT TRUMP WILL SIGN 10 EXECUTIVE ORDERS DEALING WITH BORDER SECURITY, FOX NEWS REPORTS.

AMONG THE EXECUTIVE ORDERS, THE NEWLY SWORN-IN PRESIDENT WILL DECLARE A NATIONAL EMERGENCY IN ORDER TO DEPLOY US TROOPS TO THE US-SOUTHERN BORDER AND WILL DIRECT THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE BORDER WALL WHICH WAS HALTED UNDER PRESIDENT BIDEN.

TRUMP WILL ALSO DESIGNATE CARTELS, INCLUDING MS-13 AND VENEZUELAN GANG, TREN DE ARAGUA AS FOREIGN TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS.

INCOMING WHITE HOUSE OFFICIALS SAY THEY PLAN TO END ASYLUM A FORM OF INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION GRANTED TO INDIVIDUALS IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY WHO ARE FLEEING PERSECUTION IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY BECAUSE REPUBLICANS SAY THE PRACTICE IS BEING ABUSED.

FOX NEWS REPORTS OFFICIALS ARE SAYING TRUMP WILL ALSO REINSTATE THE “REMAIN IN MEXICO” POLICY, OFFICIALLY CALLED THE MIGRANT PROTECTION PROTOCOLS (MPP), WHICH REQUIRES MIGRANTS SEEKING ASYLUM IN THE U.S. TO WAIT IN MEXICO WHILE THEIR ASYLUM CASES WERE PROCESSED, RATHER THAN STAYING IN THE U.S. DURING THE LEGAL PROCEEDINGS.

TRUMP’S EXECUTIVE ORDERS ARE SET TO UNDO SEVERAL BIDEN-ERA BORDER POLICIES, INCLUDING THE USE OF THE CBP ONE APP, WHICH MIGRANTS USE TO SEEK ASYLUM IN THE UNITED STATES.

NEARLY 1.5 MILLION MIGRANTS WERE ALLOWED INTO THE COUNTRY UNDER THE CBP APP, ACCORDING TO FOX NEWS.

TRUMP ALSO INTENDS TO SIGN AN ORDER ENDING BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP, CHALLENGING THE CONSTITUTION’S GUARANTEE OF CITIZENSHIP FOR ALL BORN ON U.S. SOIL.

“ON A PROSPECTIVE BASIS, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WILL NOT RECOGNIZE AUTOMATIC BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP FOR CHILDREN OF ILLEGAL ALIENS BORN IN THE UNITED STATES,” A TRUMP WHITE HOUSE OFFICIAL SAID IN A CALL TO REPORTERS ON MONDAY MORNING.

SINCE TRUMP WON NOVEMBER’S ELECTION, HE’S STATED HE HAS A “MANDATE” FROM THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO SECURE THE BORDER AND HE STATED SUNDAY NIGHT, DURING A PRE-INAUGURATION DINNER THAT HE WOULD BE SIGNING CLOSE TO 100 ORDERS WITHIN HOURS OF TAKING OFFICE.

ON MONDAY, MEXICO’S PRESIDENT CLAUDIA SHEINBAUM REJECTED THE “REMAIN IN MEXICO” POLICY AND STATED HER GOVERNMENT IS DEVELOPING NEW STRATEGIES TO COUNTER TRUMP’S MASS DEPORTATION PLAN.
