Recent polling data from Reuters has unveiled a notable shift in American sentiment following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally on July 13. The surveys conducted indicate a heightened concern among the populace regarding political violence, while also shedding light on the resilience of existing political allegiances.

According to the Reuters poll, 84% of Americans now perceive the country as “spiraling out of control” in the aftermath of the event. This figure marks an increase from the 74% recorded just two months ago — a 10% rise in apprehension following recent occurrences.

The survey highlights worries among citizens regarding potential acts of violence surrounding the upcoming election. About 84% of respondents expressed concern that individuals might resort to violent actions after the election.

In terms of presidential candidate support, the poll indicates a static situation in voter preferences post-assassination attempt. Trump, polling at 43%, maintains a slight lead over his Democratic rival, President Joe Biden, who is polling at 41%. That is a statistical tie within the margin of error.

The survey also delved into the beliefs of Republican respondents regarding the attempted assassination. Two-thirds of Republicans surveyed expressed a belief in divine intervention, attributing Trump’s survival of the gunfire to a higher power.

Trump is slated to formally accept his party’s nomination on Thursday, July 18, a pivotal moment in the ongoing presidential campaign.
