Karah Rucker: MORE THAN 60 THOUSAND SERVICE MEMBERS IN THE US ARMY COULD SOON BE WITHOUT PAY AND BENEFITS.
THEY WILL BE BARRED FROM SERVICE AFTER REFUSING TO COMPLY WITH A VACCINE MANDATE.
THE DEADLINE FOR COMPLYING WAS LAST THURSDAY.
DEFENSE SECRETARY LLOYD AUSTIN MADE THE ORDER LAST YEAR…REQUIRING ALL SERVICE MEMBERS TO GET THE SHOT.
THE ORDER COULD ADD TO ISSUES FOR THE ARMED SERVICES WHICH ARE ALREADY STRUGGLING WITH LOW RECRUITMENT RATES.
AS OF FRIDAY…MORE THAN ONE THOUSAND ACTIVE-DUTY SOLDIERS WERE REMOVED FROM THE ARMY BASED ON VACCINATION STATUS.
THE PENTAGON HAS SAID UNVACCINATED GUARD MEMBERS WILL NO LONGER BE PAID BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.
THAT INCLUDES MONTHLY DRILLS, TRAINING, OR ANY ACTIVE MEMBER ALREADY IN SERVICE – INCLUDING AT THE SOUTHERN BORDER.
ROUGHLY 13 PERCENT OF THE NATIONAL GUARD ARE NOT FULLY VACCINATED.
SINCE THE DEADLINE PASSED, A HARD LAYOFF HAS NOT YET BEEN ENFORCED — AS THE ARMY HAS SAID THEY WANT TO GIVE GUARDSMEN EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLY WITH THE MANDATE.
