PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN IS GRANTING CLEMENCY TO NEARLY 15-HUNDRED PEOPLE—THE MOST IN A SINGLE DAY IN U.S. HISTORY. THE WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCED THE DECISION THURSDAY, SAYING IT INCLUDES SENTENCE REDUCTIONS FOR THOSE WHO SERVED AT LEAST A YEAR IN HOME CONFINEMENT DURING THE PANDEMIC AND PARDONS FOR 39 PEOPLE CONVICTED OF NONVIOLENT CRIMES.
THE WHITE HOUSE SAYS THE MOVE HIGHLIGHTS THE PRESIDENT’S FOCUS ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM TO HELP IN REUNITING FAMILIES, STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES, AND REINTEGRATING PEOPLE INTO SOCIETY.
THE SENTENCE REDUCTIONS APPLY TO PEOPLE RELEASED UNDER THE CARES ACT, WHICH AIMED TO REDUCE COVID-19 IN PRISONS. ACCORDING TO THE WHITE HOUSE, MANY OF THEM HAVE SINCE FOUND JOBS, PURSUED EDUCATION AND CONTINUED REHABILITATION.
THIS MARKS BIDEN’S LARGEST USE OF CLEMENCY SO FAR, BUILDING ON PAST ACTIONS LIKE PARDONS FOR MARIJUANA POSSESSION AND LGBTQ PLUS SERVICE MEMBERS PENALIZED UNDER NOW OUTDATED MILITARY RULES. ADVOCATES ARE NOW URGING HIM TO GO FURTHER, INCLUDING COMMUTING SENTENCES FOR THOSE ON FEDERAL DEATH ROW.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT COMES AFTER BIDEN’S CONTROVERSIAL PARDON OF HIS SON, HUNTER BIDEN, WHICH DREW CRITICISM FROM BOTH PARTIES. THE PRESIDENT IS EXPECTED TO ISSUE MORE CLEMENCY ORDERS BEFORE LEAVING OFFICE IN JANUARY.
