Bob Dylan’s Draft Lyrics to ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ Sell for $508K at Auction
Bob Dylan’s words are as valuable as ever… after draft lyrics to his legendary song “Mr Tambourine Man” sell for more than half a million dollars.
Sixty of his items were sold Saturday through Julien’s Auctions – including handwritten postcards, a property transfer tax return, clothes, pictures, drawings, and music sheets. Through in-person and online bidding, his items generated around 1.5 million dollars in sales.
The top-selling item at 508 thousand dollars – two leaves of yellow paper annotated in Bob Dylan’s handwriting showing three drafts of “Mr Tambourine Man.”
The song hit number one on the Billboard charts when “The Byrds” released their cover version in 1965, which helped bring Dylan’s music to a wider audience. A newspaper article on Julien’s site written by journalist Al Aronowitz details how Dylan started writing the song on his breakfast bar in a swirl of chain-lit cigarette smoke.
Other top items sold include an original oil canvas painting for 260 thousand dollars and an electric guitar owned and played by Dylan for 222 thousand dollars.
As for what Bob Dylan is up to now, his legacy continues to inspire generations – mostly through the release of a biopic chronicling his early years.
“A Complete Unknown” stars Timothée Chalamet as Dylan. The film follows Dylan’s journey from his folk music roots to his controversial electric performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.
