Buses of migrants unload in NYC, Texas governor says more to come

Dozens of migrants took a road trip this weekend with the destination of New York City. 68 migrants were dropped off of two buses from Texas. The city estimates a total of 4,000 migrants from Texas have arrived in the city since May.

“It’s unimaginable what the Texas governor has done,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) said. “This is horrific when you think about what the governor is doing.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said the buses are part of a broader effort to call out Democratic immigration policies. Abbott published a tweet Tuesday responding to Mayor Adams after he called the migrant buses “horrific.”

“New York City mayor says this is horrific,” Abbott wrote on Twitter. “Did he say it was “horrific” when Biden flew plane loads into New York? Nope! Horrific is Biden’s policy of letting in 2 million illegal immigrants. The NY mayor has no idea how horrific it really is.”

New York City isn’t the only destination for migrants on buses from Texas. Washington D.C. has reportedly received more than 6,000 migrants on more than 135 buses. Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser asked for the National Guard to step in and help them. The Pentagon denied her request Friday. Mayor Bowser called it a humanitarian crisis.

“They are going to increasingly have to grapple with the challenges that we face in Texas until we have Washington, D.C., finally step up and do its job and secure the border and enforce the laws passed by the United States Congress,” Abbott said. Abbott sent an invite to both city mayors to tour the border.

“As Governor, I invite you to visit our border region to see firsthand the dire situation that only grows more urgent with each passing day, and to meet with the local officials, who like yourselves, realize this matter deserves immediate federal action,” Abbott wrote.

Most migrants crossing from Mexico enter the U.S. in Texas. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said it encountered 207,416 people at the Southwest border in June 2022 and 26% have crossed more than once.
