MAHMOUD BENNETT: IN PART 1 WE TALKED ABOUT GROWING CALLS TO EXPAND THE SUPREME COURT AND HOW THE POWER TO DO IT LIES IN THE HANDS OF CONGRESS
BUT WHAT EXACTLY ARE SOME OF THE PROPOSALS THAT HAVE BEEN MADE
LET’S START WITH COURT PACKING
IN 2021 PROGRESSIVE DEMOCRATS PROPOSED A PLAN TO CHANGE THE NUMBER OF JUSTICES FROM NINE TO 13. IT WAS REJECTED BY LEADERSHIP
BUT THE IDEA IS STILL ALIVE WITH MORE FRINGE PROPOSALS MAKING HEADLINES RECENTLY. ONE LAW PROFESSOR ADVOCATING FOR AN INCREASE TO 59 JUSTICES – ADDING ONE FROM EACH STATE. THE GOAL BEING TO REFRAME THE COURT AS MORE OF A LEGISLATIVE BODY
THEN THERE’S TERM LIMITS. THIS IDEA WOULD REQUIRE JUSTICES TO STEP DOWN AFTER A CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME – THERE’S BEEN SUPPORT FROM BOTH SIDES BUT EXPERTS SAY IT WOULD REQUIRE A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT GIVEN THAT LIFE TERM LIMITS ARE THE LAW OF THE LAND
*REGARDLESS – THESE IDEAS ARE CONTROVERSIAL* WHILE DEMOCRATS ARE PUSHING FOR BIG CHANGE – POLLS SHOW A MAJORITY OF AMERICANS DON’T AGREE WITH EXPANDING THE SUPREME COURT
BUT WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON ALL OF THIS? LET US KNOW IN THE COMMENTS BELOW
