DeSantis sends National Guard to ports amid strike, makes election changes

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, R, launched a potential port strike workaround on Thursday, Oct. 3 for his state.  At a press conference, he said he will send the Florida National Guard and the Florida State Guard to critical ports to maintain order, and if possible, resume operations.

“There are ships that have nothing to do with these negotiations,” DeSantis said. “They may need a place to be able to come and we just want to send the message: You can come to the state of Florida.”

The International Longshoremen’s Association went on strike Tuesday, Oct. 1, demanding an annual $5-per-hour pay hike over a six-year contract.

The Florida Department of Transportation will also work with seaport rail and trucking partners to limit disruptions to the supply chain.

DeSantis said for the Biden-Harris administration to allow the labor stoppage by the dockworkers is “simply unacceptable,” considering the negative impact it could have on people who are working to rebuild after Hurricane Helene.

He said President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris should “do everything in their power to ensure that these goods are where we need to be, that people are not left hanging out in the cold, waiting for these goods if they’re sitting in the ocean somewhere and they’re not being able to be used here in the state of Florida or in Georgia or North Carolina or where people are going to desperately need this.”

President Biden said Tuesday that he was urging a resolution to the port strike in the wake of the Hurricane Helene aftermath.

DeSantis also announced two other executive actions on Thursday.

He will lift time restrictions on rental properties, so people who need a place to stay while they recover from their homes are not limited on how long they can stay.

The governor also authorized supervisors of elections in the hardest-hit counties to make appropriate accommodations so people are still able to vote in the upcoming election.
