Vance was first elected to the Senate in 2022. He supports tariffs on trade and opposes intervention in foreign conflicts such as the war between Russia and Ukraine. He is anti-abortion and has introduced bills banning gender-affirming care for minors and a bill against diversity, equity and inclusion in the federal government.

Some of Vance’s work in the Senate has been bipartisan, working with Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, on a rail safety bill and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., on policies holding executives responsible for failed banks.

Vance also has a history of criticizing Trump. Previously, he questioned if Trump could be “America’s Hitler.” However, Vance removed multiple negative references to the former president as he ran for senator, eventually gaining Trump’s endorsement.

He wrote a book called “Hillbilly Elegy” about his childhood and dealing with poverty, addiction, domestic abuse both in his family and in his neighborhood. The book was published in 2016 and released as a movie on Netflix in 2020.

The announcement comes just two days after an assassination attempt against Trump at a rally in rural Pennsylvania and hours after a federal judge dismissed his classified documents case.

Vance used the popularity from his work to springboard his political career. He was elected to the United States Senate in 2022; he replaced retiring Republican Senator Rob Portman.

Trump and Vance haven’t always gotten along. In 2016, Vance told Charlie Rose, “I’m a never Trump guy.” He once tweeted about Trump – “my god what an idiot.”
But this isn’t the first time Trump and an old rival have put their differences aside to team up.

Senator Lindsey Graham and Trump once doxxed each other, they’re now good friends and allies,

Senator Marco Rubio was on Trump’s shortlist for VP’s even though his old nickname for the Florida Republican was little Marco.

Vance will be able to stay in the Senate while he runs and if he loses, he doesn’t have to run for reelection in until 2028.
