CREWS FIGHTING INTENSE WILDFIRES ARE SOMETIMES HAVING TO PUT LIFE-SAVING OPERATIONS ON HOLD BECAUSE OF CARELESS CIVILIAN DRONE OPERATORS.
THE NATIONAL INTERAGENCY FIRE CENTER REVEALS DRONE INCURSIONS FORCED FIREFIGHTING AIRCRAFT TO GROUND OPERATIONS TEN TIMES DUE TO DRONE INCURSIONS SO FAR THIS YEAR.
THE AGENCY WARNS PEOPLE TO “KEEP DRONES AWAY FROM WILDFIRES.”
ADDING: “IF YOU FLY, WE CAN’T.”
THERE HAVE BEEN 21 INCURSIONS INTO WILDFIRES THIS YEAR– WHICH IS BELOW THE YEARLY AVERAGE OF 23– AND MUCH LOWER THAN THE ALL-TIME RECORD OF 41.
BUT EVEN ONE INCIDENT IS TOO MANY– ACCORDING TO CREWS FIGHTING TO TAME FIRES.
LIKE IN 2022, WHEN A WILDFIRE TORE ACROSS 18 ACRES OF MOUNT HELENA IN MONTANA.
AN UNAUTHORIZED DRONE FLEW THROUGH THE AREA– HALTING AN AERIAL ASSAULT OF THE FIRE.
OFFICIALS FOUND THE DRONE OWNER IN 15 MINUTES– BUT THE TIME LOST– CAME AT THE COST OF A CITY PARK.
INTERFERING WITH FIREFIGHTING EFFORTS ON PUBLIC LAND IS A FEDERAL CRIME AND THE F-A-A CAN LEVEL PENALTIES OF UP TO 20-THOUSAND DOLLARS.
BUT OFFICIALS MAINTAIN THE BEST WAY TO PREVENT DISRUPTIONS IS THROUGH EDUCATION– WITH SOME PROPOSING DRONE MANUFACTURERS PUT A WARNING IN THEIR KITS, ADVISING CUSTOMERS:
“DON’T FLY OVER A WILDFIRE OR EMERGENCY AREA.”
