EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT ABDEL FATTAH AL-SISI ANNOUNCED A PROPOSAL TO REDUCE VIOLENCE IN GAZA, CALLING FOR A BRIEF TRUCE, PRISONER EXCHANGE AND RENEWED PEACE TALKS BETWEEN HAMAS AND ISRAEL.
THE PLAN INVOLVES RELEASING FOUR ISRAELI HOSTAGES HELD BY HAMAS IN EXCHANGE FOR PALESTINIAN PRISONERS. PRESIDENT AL-SISI SUGGESTED THAT BROADER CEASEFIRE DISCUSSIONS SHOULD FOLLOW WITHIN TEN DAYS OF THE TEMPORARY TRUCE.
HAMAS AND ISRAEL HAVE NOT OFFICIALLY RESPONDED TO THE PROPOSAL. HOWEVER, SOURCES CLOSE TO THE MEDIATION EFFORT INDICATE THAT WHILE HAMAS MAY CONSIDER THE OFFER, IT REMAINS FOCUSED SECURING AN ISRAELI MILITARY WITHDRAWAL FROM GAZA.
THE SITUATION IN NORTHERN GAZA HAS BEEN DESCRIBED BY THE UNITED NATIONS AS “UNBEARABLE” DUE TO SEVERE SHORTAGES OF FOOD, MEDICAL SUPPLIES AND ESSENTIAL SERVICES. RECENT CASUALTIES INCLUDE 20 PEOPLE KILLED IN AN ISRAELI AIRSTRIKE ON THE JABALIA REFUGEE CAMP AND NINE FATALITIES FROM A STRIKE ON A SCHOOL SHELTERING DISPLACED FAMILIES IN GAZA CITY.
ACCORDING TO GAZA’S HAMAS-RUN HEALTH MINISTRY THE CONFLICT HAS RESULTED IN OVER 43,000 PALESTINIANS KILLED AND AROUND 90% OF GAZA’S POPULATION DISPLACED.
EGYPT HAS BEEN LEADING MEDIATION EFFORTS, WITH THE UNITED STATES AND QATAR SUPPORTING NEGOTIATIONS.
THE SUCCESS OF THE PROPOSAL DEPENDS ON THE RESPONSE FROM ISRAEL AND HAMAS. NEGOTIATORS AIM TO ESTABLISH A TEMPORARY CEASEFIRE LASTING UP TO A MONTH, SETTING THE STAGE FOR MORE PERMANENT PEACE TALKS.
