FLORIDA MAY SOON HAVE THE STRICTEST SOCIAL MEDIA LAWS IN THE COUNTRY.
A BILL WHICH WOULD BAN CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 16 FROM SOCIAL MEDIA, REGARDLESS OF PARENTAL CONSENT, IS HEADING TO THE GOVERNOR’S DESK.
THE PROPOSED RESTRICTIONS WOULD TARGET ANY PLATFORM THAT TRACKS USER ACTIVITY. MEANING, ANY SITE ALLOWING CHILDREN TO UPLOAD CONTENT AND INTERACT WITH OTHER USERS.
SUPPORTERS OF THE LEGISLATIONS POINT TO RISING RATES OF SUICIDE, DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY IN KIDS– AS A REASON TO IMPLEMENT THE BAN.
FLORIDA IS NOT THE FIRST STATE TO TAKE ACTION– NEW YORK GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL HAS ALSO ANNOUNCED EFFORTS TO COMBAT THE ALGORITHMS ON SOCIAL MEDIA SITES– WHICH SHE SAYS SENDS KIDS DOWN RABBIT HOLES– AND INTRODUCES THEM TO HARMFUL CONTENT.
NEW YORK CITY MAYOR ERIC ADAMS DECLARED SOCIAL MEDIA AN ENVIRONMENTAL TOXIN– AND ANNOUNCED ACTION AGAINST FIVE MAJOR SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES EARLIER THIS MONTH– SEEKING A PAYOUT OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGES FOR THE COST OF MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AND PROGRAMS PROVIDED TO TEENS.
ADAMS LARGELY BLAMES SOCIAL MEDIA FOR THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS AMONG ADOLESCENTS.
HOWEVER, OPPONENTS OF THE BILL IN FLORIDA– CONTEND IT VIOLATES THE FIRST AMENDMENT– AND THE DECISION TO KEEP SOCIAL MEDIA AWAY FROM CHILDREN SHOULD BE LEFT UP TO PARENTS.
SOCIAL MEDIA BANS FOR KIDS IN ARKANSAS AND OHIO HAVE BEEN PAUSED… AS BIG TECH HAS FOUGHT BACK AGAINST THE LAWS– AND JUDGES HAVE GRANTED INJUNCTIONS– ON THE GROUNDS IT VIOLATES FREE SPEECH RIGHTS.
THE LEGISLATION HEADING TO GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS HAS BIPARTISAN SUPPORT.
IF SIGNED, IT WOULD REQUIRE SOCIAL MEDIA COMPANIES TO CLOSE ACCOUNTS BELIEVED TO BE USED BY MINORS AND CANCEL ACCOUNTS WHEN AT THE REQUEST OF PARENTS.
