“A date which will live in infamy.”

STAND IN THE WAY OF MORE RENEWABLE ENERGY?
THAT’S THE CONVERSATION CURRENTLY TAKING PLACE IN HAWAII.
THE U.S. NAVY IS PLANNING TO LEASE OUT 25 ACRES ON THEIR BASE AT PEARL HARBOR FOR MORE CLEAN ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION.
THIS INITIATIVE WOULD REQUIRE DEMOLISHING THREE HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND REPURPOSING SIX OTHERS.
MAKING ROOM FOR A BIOFUEL PLANT AND SOLAR ENERGY FARM CAPABLE OF POWERING OVER 100,000 HOMES.
THESE FACILITIES WOULD HELP CONTRIBUTE TO HAWAII’S GOAL OF POWERING THE STATE WITH 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES BY 2045.
THEY WOULD ALSO HELP ADDRESS THE NAVY’S ENERGY SECURITY ISSUES ON THE BASE.
INSTALLING THESE SYSTEMS WOULD ALLOW ALL MILITARY OPERATIONS AT PEARL HARBOR TO CONTINUE AS NORMAL EVEN IN THE EVENT OF A GRID OUTAGE.
BUT THE BUILDINGS THEY’RE LOOKING TO REPLACE ARE WITHIN A PROTECTED NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK DISTRICT.
AN ASSESSMENT OF THE PROJECT SAID IT WILL ALTER SITES DEEMED HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT.
THE NAVY IS NOW SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT ON WHETHER TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THEIR RENEWABLE ENERGY PLAN.
PEOPLE WILL HAVE UNTIL THE SECOND OF MAY TO VOICE THEIR OPINION TO THE NAVAL DEPARTMENT.
